The old pub now has less than 10 posts to go, so I thought I'd start a new one. The old one can be found here

This is a place for feminist pom pom waving and talking about stuff which might not need a thread for itself.

Fill your boots.

Haha! Brown worms on hold at the moment while I try to finish the stupid jigsaw puzzle. Then it's back to the brown worms. I'm getting used to knit but haven't taught myself purl yet.

outsself i keep meaning to say that i heard you on AA the other day - i didn't realise it was you at the time obviously but when you posted above i realised which caller you must have been.

you weren't incoherent at all, you were completely clear about how it's apparently ok to call for muslims to collectively take responsibility for the situation, but not ok to call for men as a group to the same

I still say ear infection was worse than giving birth (and I was not a fan of giving birth)

Hope you are feeling better buffy

WhentheRed - women in cages Shock. No wonder your DS was affected. Your DD may have been playing "I'm too cool to be shocked by this" card (I played that card a few times at that age)?

Hope you are feeling better Buffy.

Good luck Zennot and LordCopper on Wednesday and Dragonlette on Monday! I agree childcare costs are starting to plummet now. Although we have just upped the hours for DS2 so I have more consistent hours at work. But in January DS2 will get 15 hrs free so the bill will go down again - hurrah! Mind you we were paying more childcare than anyone I know so the only way is down Grin.

Just checking in after a couple of weeks wandering around Northern Europe. I see we've moved to a new pub - it may take me a while to catch up.

Dd2 has been using the free hours at preschool for 4 terms but my childcare bill hasn't gone down at all because she was still taking up a place with our cm. The cm still worked out as better value for us than a nursery (and suited dd2's personality far better as well) as she only charges a retainer for the school holiday whereas all the nurseries round here still charge full price. Now she's going to school I will only be paying a third of what we have been paying up to now. It's brilliant! We have just had a letter telling us that it's a different teacher in reception than we thought, and we've prepared dd2 for Miss X when actually it will be Miss Y instead. Dd2 isn't best pleased with that but I'm sure she'll be fine once she meets her.

I had a friend who danced in a cage in a nightclub in Ibiza each summer during uni. She hated every minute of it but she came back in September with way more money than anybody else. I hate that women are treated as commodities.Sad

In the top 10 stories on the BBC news today we have:

  1. Aussie rule footballers "fancy dress as Rolf Harris and girl"

  1. Huge group of celebrity women get hacked and all their naked pics released (some admit that pics are real, some say pics are fake and this is somehow relevant to the story)

  1. Perez Hilton "celebrity blogger" is deeply sorry that he published all the photos of the women after they came out as he now realises that it was a shitty thing to do.

I've never liked Perez Hilton. I don't like celeb culture, and I certainly don't like him for publishing stolen photos.

Perez Hilton is, for example, a twat.

On a more entertaining note, have you Fabulous Feminists seen what Amazon are calling their answer to Netflix?

Amazon PIV.

Standing for Prime Instant Video.

I was ROFLing when I saw the advert. I'm guessing the marketing team haven't had much experience of feminist terminology.

They haven't, have they!? Shock Grin

I've finished my jigsaw puzzle. Now I can stop evaluating everything around me to see if they would be easy or hard as a jigsaw puzzle. Hmm

I'm reading "Mythologies for dummies". It's strangely entertaining. "Egypt is the Texas of the ancient world with everything there being bigger."

But last day of no-school. And reading up on high school prospectus. Local good school makes a song and dance about how important uniforms are and you will obey on the pain of death... >

But nothing very feministy to post. Have been hiding.

Childcare costs are absolutely excruciating. I still remember when I was 8 weeks pg with dd2, lying in bed in a cold sweat having calculated the costs of 2 preschoolers in full time childcare. I just lay there for hours thinking "what on earth are we doing to do?"

The sum of what it costs is horrible. Then you torture yourself by working it out over the year, and then you punish yourself still further by working out how much you actually have to earn gross to have that much cash net, and you feel just sick.

Feminist note for the day: here I am at work while DP walks dd1 to school for her first day. It is a blow against the patriarchy. thanks DP

ABland has hit the nail on the head. :o

I'm not sure what Amazon were thinking when they decided on that name Annie, but I'm willing to bet no women, or at least no feminists, were involved.

Who is Perez Hilton? I'm afraid I've not heard of many people ... I once decided not to vote for somebody (student union Grin) because the canvassing person said "but he's famous!" I'm ignorant and over-sensitive.

Grin I love Amazon PIV.

I suppose there might be a tiny overlap between people sufficiently feministy to know the term, and sufficiently unfeministy to be disappointed it's not porn.

Oh that is brilliant Annie Grin.

Was Egypt also trying to eradicate women's rights and bodily autonomy too, LordCopper? Angry

Yy vezzie to childcare costs. We pay twice as much in childcare costs as mortgage. It is frightening.

On a completely non-feminist note but a frustrating MN note, last night I couldn't get on to MN from about 9.30pm on any device in the house. Then this morning I could get on, but now can't post again on my phone. It just sits there with the timer ad infinitum. I know none of you can sort that out but I thought I'd share the pain Grin.

ABland, I know, what is the point, right? You have to pay it anyway. And it's not like the CM could charge less! They don't get rich. It's just that I have this misguided belief in "budgeting" - feeling that there isn't quite enough money, if I have a good hard look at it, some more will appear. Nope. Doesn't work.

Childcare costs are something I refuse to think about. The plan at the moment is to persuade MIL to move up here, because she'd love having DD every day. And she's that rare sort of MIL who doesn't drive you crazy in any way. She likes buying clothes for DD, but never brings anything pink and frilly. Last summer I commented on how lovely it was that she agreed with me about not dressing small girls exclusively in pink frills. She immediately replied, "Oh, I don't agree with you in the least. But I respect your decision." I'm happy enough with that!

In my charity shop, kids' clothes are on separate rails according to gender. I've asked the manager if I can desegregate them, but head office says no. Yesterday I decided to be subversive. A pirate t-shirt? Clearly intended for boys. I put it on the girls' rail. Do I get a feminist cookie?
