The old pub now has less than 10 posts to go, so I thought I'd start a new one. The old one can be found here

This is a place for feminist pom pom waving and talking about stuff which might not need a thread for itself.

Fill your boots.

Woke up at 4am. Sad The consequence of that is that I've nearly finished the last Earthsea books and the first 4 hasn't arrived yet. (Sorry I do know there are more serious things in life ...)

trevortrevorslattery · 12/09/2014 10:18

Friiidaayyy! Hullo all.

So - shall I go and see Lucy this evening at the cinema? It looks amazing from the trailer (Scarlett Johansson in the lead role as a super-intelligent being who kicks a lot of ass) .. has anyone seen it? It's by Luc Besson I think.

I agree that people think "aww pets" and think that humans can stick up for themselves so have less sympathy. Unfortunately not all humans can stick up for themselves.

There was an article in our local paper last week about a dog who died from neglect - horribly sad - accompanied by a big headline and photo of his owner (a woman). At the very end of the article it mentioned that his owner had been a victim of DV and escaped from it at that address, and couldn't bring herself to go back to get the dog from the empty flat. Just awful all round. Sad

PetulaGordino · 12/09/2014 10:22

bloody hell trevor, what appalling reporting!

i have heard mixed reviews re lucy - not from a feminist POV, but from a plot/production POV. apparently it's luc besson trying too hard to be luc besson (????)

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 12/09/2014 11:03

This is back a bit, but on the Cordelia thing...

I also get the rage about this complete mismatch between the way the media (and powerful men, if you take that quotation) portray weight and the reality of it. 10 stone is spoken about there as a heavy women. For my height (tall!) it is bang in the middle of a healthy BMI. That means that, for lots of lower heights it must be well within healthy. Yet it is portrayed as fat.

No wonder so many women have screwed up ideas of what they 'should' weigh.

I have actively tried to step away from this by doing my weight in kg these days. I have no idea what I weigh in stone. It keeps a lot of those media messages out of my head.

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 12/09/2014 11:13

Last night, before CBS' coverage of the NFL game between Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers, CBS presenter James Brown gave an incredible monologue about domestic violence. The Ravens are the team that abuser Ray Rice has just been dropped from.

I stood up and applauded after he finished.

FuckOffWeasel · 12/09/2014 11:24

Lovely video. I fucked up and read the comments though.

FuckOffWeasel · 12/09/2014 11:27

I wonder how long it will be before the NFL is is forgiven for not giving a tiny fuck about women and doing anything until everyone else saw the video.

Angry

IN other news Mike Tyson is apparently angry because he was referred to as a convicted rapist.

What with being a convicted rapist and all.

PetulaGordino · 12/09/2014 11:30

fabulous video. but yes, don't read the comments

there are stats about DV increasing at the time of world cup soccer games. has similar been found wrt NFL or basketball events i wonder?

trevortrevorslattery · 12/09/2014 11:31

Thanks for the review petula. I think I will give it a shot. Also I like the description on IMDB:

"A woman, accidentally caught in a dark deal, turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic."

I think I shall be a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic, from now on.

Tess thankyou - here is a link to a transcript too www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/24705864/james-brown-delivers-strong-anti-domestic-violence-message

AnnieLobeseder · 12/09/2014 11:56

More depressing, FOWeasel, is the thread on here where some rape apologist is also upset about Mike Tyson being referred to as a rapist. Apparently he has "served his time" and everyone should just forget about it now. Hmm

PetulaGordino · 12/09/2014 11:57

barely a review trev - i haven't seen it, and i agree it sounds an interesting premise

PetulaGordino · 12/09/2014 11:58

so they're only a rapist as long as they are in prison Confused

PetulaGordino · 12/09/2014 12:00

(trev we seem to both be within some sort of feminism/archers crossover. with hakluyt too i think Grin)

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 12/09/2014 12:10

Tyson might have done his time, but he committed the act of rape, and thus is a rapist.

What does he and other people find so hard to grasp about that fact?

DoctorTwo · 12/09/2014 12:13

That's a fantastic speech Tess, thanks for posting it. Chris Rock made a good point about this, he pointed out that Rice was sacked not for domestic violence but for the video of him knocking his wife unconscious.

In one piece of good news Oscar Pistorius is guilty of culpable homicide. Apparently the judge can either fine him or send him to jail. If she hands him a fine I think we can safely say there is no justice for victims of DV.

LineRunner · 12/09/2014 12:24

Oscar Pistorius is out on bail.

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 12/09/2014 12:30

DoctorTwo - Chris Rock was spot on, and that's why people over here saying that, the Ravens and NFL don't deserve any praise for their actions (as those actions were forced due to the leaking of the video).

While NFL teams still have scantily clad cheerleaders, women are being objectified by the American football community and maybe I over-think things, but I strongly believe this contributes to how US footballers and fans view women.

I'm just glad that our team here in Pittsburgh (the Steelers, the team who played the Ravens last night) don't have cheerleaders, and a large part of that decision is the owner believing it doesn't have a place in the sport. Hurrah!

PetulaGordino · 12/09/2014 12:38

i fear scantily clad women cheerleaders are becoming more popular in the uk in men's sport, but i might be wrong

i don't know how i feel about the oscar pistorius verdict. i haven't followed it too closely and presumably the judge has weighed the evidence with respect to his intent to kill or not. but there was evidence of reeva steenkamp saying she was frightened of him

in other depressing news, it looks as though a father attempted to kill his daughter and then succeeded in killing himself yesterday

trevortrevorslattery · 12/09/2014 12:59

yes petula I noticed you there too - these are the only 2 threads I ever actually post on!

trevortrevorslattery · 12/09/2014 12:59

Errr. how do you get out on bail when you've been convicted of manslaughter? Is this normal?

PetulaGordino · 12/09/2014 13:03

we'll start our own clique trev. feminist archers fans unite!

trevortrevorslattery · 12/09/2014 13:21

TerrariaMum · 12/09/2014 14:47

Sorry for the derail, but I really need a stiff non-alcoholic drink in this pub.

It's not entirely feminist related, but could someone on here tell me that they too have been the mother dragging a tantrumming 3 year old out of the library to the judgmental looks of people inside and out of it?

Actually, the next thing may be more related to feminism. Whilst holding tantrumming DD1 under my arm, wearing DS, and pushing DD2 in the buggy, a man said to me 'You need extra hands, love'

Yes, yes, I do. I said 'Yes, I know, thanks' but apparently I didn't say it nicely enough for he responded in an offended manner 'It was a joke!'

Maybe, just maybe it wasn't the time for jokes? Honestly.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 12/09/2014 15:02

Oh, can I join the feminist archers fan enclave?

PetulaGordino · 12/09/2014 15:03

elephants i missed you out, i'm so sorry!
