Right, thought I'd better start a new pub. I warn you, my knowledge of Roman numerals conks out shortly after this one, so either buffy will have to start the next thread, or we'll have to go Arabic.

Everyone is welcome in - if you want to chat, or just jump in with a question/link/gin, please do. Smile Especially if it's too small for a thread or you don't feel up to thread-starting.

The old thread has, at my count, about 9 posts to go, and it was here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/2126791-Feminist-Pub-VIII-not-as-prolific-as-the-Swaggerers-but-there-are-cushions-and-consciousness?

We were just chatting about feministy light reading, and will doubtless meander onto other topics shortly. Smile

LRD, arrogant would have been "you absolutely must read my blog on this , because it will show you all that I thought about this waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before you did, and I am more right about it than you."

Mentioning that you have one and the salient point that you had written about the very point being discussed is hardly arrogant, just pertinent.

PetulaGordino · 19/08/2014 15:08

zigackly Annie

I am going to go on a hunt for said post now. It would have been pretty arrogant of me to think that DP was the first one to point out the clip!

AnnieLobeseder · 19/08/2014 15:24

Stop with all this arrogance at once, all of you. It is most unbecoming of a lay-dee.

I shall never use the word arrogant again.

I have to admit, I realized reading back that the reason I've used it is because I was reading the women's history thread and thinking of my (lovely, but sooo strict!) granny, who considered it 'arrogant' for anyone ever to push themselves forwards. Grin

I'm now resisting the temptation to go on a Blackadder binge. I do love it.

(Oh, and petula, it is very much a side point to a blog post mostly about something else, because I have still not found the subtlety or the courage to write a post about what I think of gender issues. Part of the difficulty is that, because I'm teaching, I don't want to write anything that might upset a student I'm responsible for, even though the blog is just very scrappy ideas.)

I found it, a v interesting post in its own right and I know exactly what you mean re putting some of the gender stuff out there

On a similar note I have been musing about blackadder and bob in the same series... I call DP my "live-in chum" Grin

Grin

Oh yes. Bob is awesome.

I can't explain why the bit about "one of my disciplines" is so unaccountably fucking HILARIOUS

Is it the primness?
Is it the "my"?

I don't know. It's just great, anyway

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/08/2014 16:41

No, I'm right there with you.

It's definitely the 'my'. And the 'one of'. Like, you know, I do women's studies in 30 hours (a phenomenal amount of time!), but it's not all I do. I wouldn't want you to think I wasn't a Proper Man.

OP posts:
PetulaGordino · 19/08/2014 16:48

I agree. "I have graciously devoted some of my ENORMOUS brain space to your little subject, aren't I magnanimous?"

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/08/2014 16:50

Exactly.

And the sad thing is, he probably could be an ally. Because out-and-out misogynists rarely take women's studies courses. But he's become out of those 'I want a cookie!' types.

grimbletart · 19/08/2014 17:06

Well, I've only lived as a woman (or at least a female) for 70 years. I feel such a failure. Just think, I've wasted 70 years being a woman when I could just have done women's studies for 30 hours and known so much more. Sad

My first labour was 48 hours - I've calculated I could have fitted the course in between contractions and still had time left to seek his advice...

I need a beer.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/08/2014 17:09

I can offer Wine. I promise, it looks like wine, but it's definitely beer.

And yes, lazy you, fancy being in labour and not even getting some good education out of it! Tcha ...

UptoapointLordCopper · 19/08/2014 17:11

I fucking read A Suitable Boy during my second labour. Hah!

I wonder if I could ever pick up that book again without fear. Hmm

Bloody hell kickass, if I ever use 'speaking as a man' I will have to name change and lie low. grin

Yesterday I got banned from, and called a bigot by, an anti transphobia group on the Facebooks for pointing out that lesbians who refuse to have sex with transwomen aren't bigots but are in fact lesbians who don't want a penis in or around them. So there you go. I'm a bigot. Flame away...

I am a TERF ally. I didn't used to be but had my mind changed by reading around various feminist blogs. The final nail in the coffin was the Lily Cade Twitter storm which got blogged widely.

UptoapointLordCopper · 19/08/2014 17:51

I am still astounded by people prescribing to people who they should or should not have sex with. Shock Can I propose that we simply have sex in private? Oh we do already!?

SevenZarkSeven · 19/08/2014 21:01

Hi all sorry to jump in like this but does anyone know how to tell BBC they have incorrect reporting?

I just saw this "Northumbria Police said 33 rapes have this year been listed as "no crime" - when people subsequently inform officers no crime took place." and this is not true, it's not what "no criming" is and will give a really wrong message to people reading the article.

Any ideas? Thanks :) It's this article BTW
