Worth £16 billion in Germany. Legal to "make it safer".

Interview with 22 yr old Hannah. 6 men per night, earns 100 to 1000 euros per night,

Talking about should it be illegal in the UK and the fact that brothels are safer than the streets. They have super brothels in Germany.

I often compare what I do with cleaning. Its not on every little girls wishlist but sometimes you do what you have to do to get by.

MG, that sounds good in theory, but:

More than half of women in prostitution have been raped and or seriously assaulted and at least 75% have been physically assaulted at the hands of the pimps and punters. 74% of women in prostitution identify poverty, the need to pay household expenses and support their children, as primary motivators for being drawn into prostitution. [Home office (2004). Solutions and Strategies: Drug Problems and Street Sex Markets. London: UK Government]

Think about ten of your male friends/relatives/colleagues. Would any of them have sex with 6 men a day, as per the woman in the OP, if they had any other choice?

grimbletart · 16/03/2014 16:42

Not sure why you are shocked at Migsy's situation mysterious guy. It is, after all, pretty typical of a prostitute's life - and that is what is shocking.

Sex-industry defenders don't seem to understand (or are invested in not understanding) that if you got rid of trafficking and women coerced into prostitution by poverty and/or physical, sexual and psychological abuse, you would be left with a very small industry.

As Kajsa Ekis Ekman says, you would need to reduce the number of men paying for sex to a fraction of what it is now if you wanted to ensure that prostitution only involved women who wanted to be there. And of course the sex industry has the opposite goal - like any capitalist entity, it aims to expand its market reach.

Thus, you get the situation in Germany and Holland, where legalisation has only empowered and enriched the pimps, not the prostituted women, and trafficking in women and girls has massively increased as the market expands to meet increased demand.

All of those statistics apply to me. And I know I keep on banging on about it but I chose to go into this, I wasn't forced. I was 19 and an adult by UK law. I don't think about what happened to me as I was growing up and I try not to think about the bad experiences I've had, so I doubt they impact upon my choice to work. Yes 'poverty' keeps me in this job, but also my child, I wont go into too much detail but I feel like staying in this situation means he still has contact with the father.

What I'm trying to say is there are many reasons for a woman to stay in this profession. But most of us still do this through choice.

Migsy

If you woke up tomorrow and chose not to be a prostitute, what would your friend to whom you have debts do?

GarthsUncle · 16/03/2014 17:13

MG

Thank you for answering my question. Could you answer WhenTheRed's question also?

I totally agree about raising the age to 21, mainly because there is one aspect of prostitution that makes me feel a bit sick and that the fact the majority of punters love teen prostitutes. I was advertised as a teenager and it drew in some very odd characters, I've done role play where I've had to do the whole school girl thing and also done a dad/daughter situation (which was the most commonly ask fantasy). I'm petite and have always looked younger than my actual age and punters love that.

I think I started too young. I wasn't prepared to have sex with old 60+ yr old men as a teenager, I still don't like it now. I've never met an underage girl but in an industry where the younger you look the better (and I'm aware there is a milf scene but I'm talking about the majority) some girls who are 18-20 could easily pass as 15/16 year olds. Girls who I have spoken to have always told me they were 18+.

I only know other prostitutes because they work the party scene where obvs there are no kids present. I would never see a punter around my child but I'm sure others do, I think that is very wrong, you never know what could happen and I'd never risk harm to my baby.

GarthsUncle · 16/03/2014 17:38

"...do you know of other working women who are not so concerned about their children and, perhaps allow them to come into contact with punters (I don't mean to be abused but perhaps the children are present in the home when prostitution is taking place). "

MG, I would imagine that for many prostitutes who work perhaps in a flat where their child is sleeping, it's not because they are not concerned for their children, it's because they have no other option.

MG, I didn't think it was fair to categorise them as having less concern for their child as many will of course feel the have to work as prostitutes to feed their child.

In the spirit of your open questions to migsy, I have never paid for sex; have you?

migsy86 · 16/03/2014 17:55

Trust me I don't feel intelligent, English and science were the only 2 subjects at school I was good at.

And answer to your question is no, I'm not attracted to men. I have seen a side to them that I can't un-see, been asked to do some horrible things and treated like shit. I am in no doubt punters just see me as someone who can empty their balls. I know punters aren't 'most' men but after seeing 40-50 men on average a week for 4 yrs my view of the opposite sex has been tainted. I can't look men in the eye when I'm out. I don't know why and it feels really irrational. I would hate for my son to grow up to be a punter.
