Is sexual orientation a choice?

Julie Bindel seems to think so.

Is it just me or is that actually fairly offensive?

Thats perfectly fine eats, just don't use the terms, truth or fact, like many rad fems do to shut down debate.

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 18/06/2012 22:23

It sounds pretty rude to say - just don't use the terms...-fine if you want to say you would prefer me not to use the term. But it does sound rather like an order

EclecticShock · 18/06/2012 22:27

I suppose so, but all men are sexist sound like fascist propaganda to me... Horses for courses...

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 18/06/2012 22:28

So you think eclectic that some men can be brought up in a patriarchial society with lots of sexist messages and not absorb any of them?

WidowWadman · 18/06/2012 22:30

eatsbrains - men and women are brought up in the same society. A lot of them take the sexist messages on board, but thankfully not all of them. And that's true for all sexes and genders.

Don't believe everyone is brought up in a a dominant patriarchal society that would cause them not to be able to not be sexist.

EclecticShock · 18/06/2012 22:32

In such a dominant... That should say.

EclecticShock · 18/06/2012 22:34

Eats, by your own definition, you were brought up in patriarchial society and you've stayed immune to it?

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 18/06/2012 22:38

No I have been affected by it, has everyone. But women and men/boys and girls are treated differently and given different messages

namechangeguy · 18/06/2012 22:41

Is it possible that some feminists have raised sons who are not sexist? Perhaps even some feminists who post here?

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 18/06/2012 22:43

I think they try their best and can raise much less sexist boys/men. But as you know, children have lots of other influences on them apart from their mother. So no I don't think it is possible to raise a totally none sexist boy/man. That is what insidious about patriarchy - it literally gets inside of us all

enimmead · 18/06/2012 22:44

Eats - how do you know what every male thinks and how they behave?

I am willing to believe that there are men out there who live their life with hardly a hint of sexism in them. Who share the housework? Who share childcare, who do not expect women to dress up for them, who do not objectify women, who have opened their eyes to the world and do not have sexist attitudes.

I am sure such men exist. Somewhere.

enimmead · 18/06/2012 22:44

Can a man be raised in a sexist environment and then change their ways and habits?

EclecticShock · 18/06/2012 22:45

Well of its insidiously inside all men, they are a lost cause then, women can't be free while they exist :)

RulersMakeBadLovers · 18/06/2012 22:46

It's like 1989 all over again with all these "E"s everywhere.

In my opinion.

EclecticShock · 18/06/2012 22:47

So eats, I take you feel men should be eradicated or at least made a simodcant minority in order for women to be treated fairly?

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 18/06/2012 22:47

Enim - let me know when you find a totally non sexist man. And sometimes it can be much more subtle than that stuff.

I think men raised in a sexist way can become much less sexist, but not totally.

And i believe in the patriarchy - so it is not just about individual men, but institutions, our culture our laws, etc.

EclecticShock · 18/06/2012 22:48

Significant even...

namechangeguy · 18/06/2012 22:48

I am a man, and I am not sexist. There, I said it Grin

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 18/06/2012 22:49

Eclectic - what makes you think I want to eradicate all men?

I want patriarchy not to exist so we can all live as individuals.

Rulers :)

EclecticShock · 18/06/2012 22:49

Rulers, why don't you actually address me or me with your constructive opinion. I know it's hard work but i feel it would be much more constructive.

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 18/06/2012 22:49

namechange - I am sure actually you are

EclecticShock · 18/06/2012 22:50

Well, you want equality but men aren't capable in your view, so what is your answer?

namechangeguy · 18/06/2012 22:51

Sure? How can you be?

WidowWadman · 18/06/2012 22:51

So what is it that makes women different, in your view, eats - why do you think women are capable of being not sexist, whilst men aren't?
