For R.S i have been asked to think, and collect, 10 key points WHY women have suffered from sexism in the past. I can think of HOW, but I am interested in WHY. I would be really interseted and grateful in any thoughts you may have! Thanks!

no i didn't mean you lrd - first part was to rhubarb only last line was to you.

i did mention it first i think and it was tongue in cheek saying 'outing'. no offense meant.

SirCliffRichardSucksEggsInHell · 06/12/2011 15:06

LRD, I think santa was aiming that at me.

Hullygully · 06/12/2011 15:07

It's really hard to know, innit? There were certainly female disciples, and Jesus did tell one of them (Martha?) to go and spread the gospel. I'll have to go and research.

Jewishness is passed through the female line. Ol Jesus was a Jew, so perhaps he did have a few female mates.

See how easy it is to write a post that is mis-interpreted?
It happens.

Anyway, got to pick kids up now.

LEttletownofBOFlehem · 06/12/2011 15:07

I wonder if they wore beards when they went to stonings?

SirCliffRichardSucksEggsInHell · 06/12/2011 15:08

Hully, more than a few. There was Martha and Mary who were the two closest and Mary Magdalene (a different Mary) who had her own gospel but who the church wrongly denounced as a prostitute.

SirCliffRichardSucksEggsInHell · 06/12/2011 15:09

LEttle - ask Brian, he knows!

Hullygully · 06/12/2011 15:10

where is rhubarb...?!

Why don't you like PARD, bof?

It's much more interesting to read opinions and thoughts than shesaidshesaid, you'rerudenoyouare. Nothing to think about and learn from there.

when things are passed through the so-called female line btw it actually translates to the maternal uncles having power rather than the biological fathers. it doesn't mean that women themselves had any more power or authority or autonomy - just that her reproductive capacity and produce belonged to her brother rather than her husband. it did/does tend to make divorce more accessible though in some cultures.

LEttletownofBOFlehem · 06/12/2011 15:14

I have always been ambivalent about the Martha and Mary story. On the one hand, you could say it was telling women to not do so much housework, but on the other, it was all a bit "Oi, there are more important things to do right now, like listening to me, the man, WHILE I AM TALKING- the chores will still be there when I've gone."

It just comes across as a bit, um, entitled? Who does he think he is? The Son Of God?

Xmas Wink
Hullygully · 06/12/2011 15:15

I didn't know that, santa. It makes sense.

I clearly can't keep up with this thread so will bow out!

LEttletownofBOFlehem · 06/12/2011 15:19

I don't think I've seen much actual PARD on mumsnet, Hully, that doesn't end up being more Passive Aggressive than Polite and Reasonable. But to be honest, if PARD really did win out, the internet would wither and die- I think people like a bit of a ruckus.

Hullygully · 06/12/2011 15:24

I think they do Sad

But really, seriously, where is the fun, what's to like, and what is the point of just trading personal accusations? That's what I don't get. It makes me feel a bit ill, like being a kid and your parents screaming

I think there is a world of difference between passive-aggressive and being polite.

Jesus was a Jew, so he very definitely would have been married by the time he was thirty, if his mother had anything to do with it...

it wouldn't be mentioned, because it would be like mentioning the sky was blue - a total given.

Hullygully · 06/12/2011 15:30

He had lil bubbas - it was in that film

What was the importance of the Virgin Birth? Just because God was The Daddy?

OP posts:
EdlessAllenPoe · 06/12/2011 15:33

well, there may be an element of mistranslation there too..'parthenos' = girl....virgin would depend how quickly she could run :)

Hullygully · 06/12/2011 15:34

OH yes! I forgot that one.

OP posts:
LEttletownofBOFlehem · 06/12/2011 15:35

Now you are reminding me of that MNer whose husband suggested riding through the Middle East on a second-hand motorbike just after their baby was born, Edgar: "AIBU to expect dh not to fuck off with his twelve beardy mates on a tour of Jordan and Syria leaving me with a newborn?" Xmas Grin

Come to think of it, that baby was born in a very dramatic snowed-in air-sea rescue scenario, and I think it was GPS positioning that guided the wise men medical professionals rather than a star, but hey...

Hullygully · 06/12/2011 15:35

That's right, it was "virgin" as in young girl...amazing how it went from there to God was the dad.

OP posts:
SantaIsAnAnagramOfSatan · 06/12/2011 15:36

because of the virgin/whore stuff hully. bad women have sex, good women are virgins.

EdlessAllenPoe · 06/12/2011 15:38

LEttletownofBOFlehem · 06/12/2011 15:38

I think the Holy Spirit came upon her, iirc, Hully. Which is pre-dated by the Myth of Zeus and Danäe, and him impregnating her as a shower of rain. It's interesting how much crossover there is in religious stories, isn't it?

EdlessAllenPoe · 06/12/2011 15:39

"I think the Holy Spirit came upon her,"

tsk tsk, pornification of The Bible...
