Facebook supports rape?

Have we a thread on this yet?

www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/oct/04/facebook-hate-speech-women-rape?newsfeed=true

I am really shocked.

OP posts:

I think that although a lot of men wouldn't themselves dream of having sex without active, enthusiastic participation of their partner, they would not feel that other men, who are prepared to do so, are rapists.

So although they themselves may not have the entitlement affliction, they don't quarrel with other men's entitlement. They see it as something not for them, even not very top-notch behaviour perhaps, but not "rape-rape", surely?

So that's why these FB hate-speak pages can exist. Because although men may not wnat to exercise their own entitlement to have sex with a less than enthusiastic woman, they are not prepared to take away their brother's entitlement to do so.

We need to start looking at "ordinary" men's attitudes to sex and rape. Because the ordinary attitudes, are what enable rapists, to rape. 6% conviction rate for reported rapes and most rapes not reported at all. That happens in a context and it's that context we need to dismantle.

HoneyMomster · 07/10/2011 18:55

Yes uppity, I really think that's the nub - 'it wasn't really rape-rape' how often does that get trotted out, in those words or not. by good decent people.

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 07/10/2011 19:03

Too often, HoneyMomster. Too bloody often.

Tortington · 08/10/2011 20:24

so are apologies in the pipeline?

EllaDee · 08/10/2011 20:32

I don't think she thinks she has anything to apologize for, Custardo. She's barely accepted mine. Sad

Tortington · 08/10/2011 20:35

EllaDee · 08/10/2011 20:45

I have no clue what you are on about. The only person I see using the word 'slut' here is you. No, I don't like it. Does that have anything to do with the thread you've resurrected after I thought it'd all been sorted?

Tortington · 08/10/2011 21:08

sorted? really did you?

anyay nol i', talking about the feminists not ackling the anti woman venacular on mumsnet. if you aren;t faminliar with twi sluts or snake wankers then maybe you should tackle this

HoneyMomster · 08/10/2011 21:13

Oh dry up Custardo you're just stirring now. Nice. Useful. In the spirit of openness and debate. Hmm poor ol misunderstood Custy who only ever wanted to discuss the issues in a reasonable manner. Not to stir or dictate what we should be discussing, or going on about big meanies.

How's that for tackling a regular MNer?

That's that, I won't be responding so say what you like.

HandDivedScallopsrgreat · 08/10/2011 21:17

WTF? Since when do we have to search and police MN for "anti woman venacular"? Isn't that MNHQ's job? If you don't like it Custardo, report it. Isn't that what we get told enough?

Another one who hasn't a clue what twi sluts or snake wankers are btw.

Tortington · 08/10/2011 21:18

crikey!

Tortington · 08/10/2011 21:21

your another one or your suggesting i'm the one who doesnt know what they are. if its you - i fail to see how you can comment tbh?

just wondering if there is regular anti woman use of this term - why it is not tackled? not stirring to add tis to the discussion, please don't belittle my argument by presuming it is. there is this vernacular here. it has been picked up on on this threat witht he use of the word twunts. i think that an organised goup of people agaimst this ort of venacular would be useful. why is that a bad thing>

Tortington · 08/10/2011 21:23

ive always wondered this tbh why its ok to call another woman a slut - is that ok~?

HandDivedScallopsrgreat · 08/10/2011 21:27

Sorry Custardo - I can't actually understand what you are on about. I don't know what twi sluts are or how they are relevant to MN. I just object to being told because I am a feminist I should be tackling the problem. If you have a problem with twi sluts then report it.
And who said it was OK to call a woman a slut?

I don't think it's ever been ok to call another woman a "slut", custardo. And I've never seen it coming from one of the Mumsnet Feminists.

I'm also struggling to see your points re: the anti-women vernacular. I'm completely lost as to what you mean.

And no. I don't think Rhubarb deserves an apology. She spoke to and about rape victims in a quite shocking manner, assuming that she knew more about our ordeals than we do. She also accused me of verbally abusing her, something which, after re-reading the thread and discussing it with another person, I can't see. For her to accuse anyone of bullying is unacceptable, especially in the vicious manner in which I felt she spoke to several members over the past few days; myself included.

Tortington · 08/10/2011 21:31

sgm no they dont listen. even as a non feminist i find women being referred to as sluts offensive. have reported. thought feminists would be interested~?

AlysWorld · 08/10/2011 21:33

And if you search this very board for 'slutwalk', you'll find some lengthy discussion about that very issue.

EllaDee · 08/10/2011 21:33

I think it's better to take up stuff like that on the thread, custardo. This thread is about other things. There's also an activism section if that would work for you?

Tortington · 08/10/2011 21:33

'our' ordeals. assumes more than you know. be careful. and yes frothy - you should apologise and im not the only person to say so.

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 08/10/2011 21:33

Custardo, why is it our job to police the threads, and make sure anti-women terminology isn't used? That is MNHQ's job...
