Even with quotation marks, I really loathe the use of "honour killing".

Talk about misuse of the word "honour"

Honour is an entirely patriarchal construct. The main point of which is to control and oppress women.

It will have no place in a free society because it is a tool of oppression.

It can be binned come the revolution.

NotADudeExactly · 08/09/2011 13:29

Agreed. Evidence courtesy of Google:

(In case this doesn't come up correctly: Googling "a man's honour" prompts Google to ask: 'did you mean "a woman's honour"? And, yes, this is Google UK we're talking about. Hmm)

alexpolismum · 08/09/2011 13:29

Beachcomber - I can't get your second link to work. What was it about?

It is from the same website and explores the same themes in more detail. If you go back to the first link and scroll down to the bottom of the page there is a link to it. It is called 'the anatomy of honour'. It is a follow up to the first article.

TheCrackFox · 08/09/2011 13:48

Bob, your posts makes no sense whatsoever. In what way can killing women for not doing as they are told not be about controlling and oppressing women?

You state that "It's about human interaction..." and then go on to say "Human interaction and what is and isn't acceptable is a cornerstone of civilisation. Discard the rules controlling it completely and what you're left with is anarchy."

Your argument seems to imply that without rules (even if they invlove slaughtering women) we end up with anarchy. Frankly, I would choosen anarchy.

Hullygully · 08/09/2011 13:53

bobbanana you are one weird construct

so are them others

are you all one?

MitchiestInge · 08/09/2011 13:55

imagine if a clever one started posting though

it would be scary

they do exist

Beachcomber · 08/09/2011 13:56

Yes I think we can chuck out the aspect of civilisation which involves killing women and girls in order to control their sexuality and restrict their autonomy AKA as oppress them.

Not one of the better ideas.

TheCrackFox · 08/09/2011 13:56

I think Bob is stating that killing women is really for the greater good. Confused It has to be the misogynist post I have read in a good long while. Quite stunning actually.

edd1337 · 08/09/2011 13:57

Why the hostility mitchiest? An opposing viewpoint =/= not intelligent

Hullygully · 08/09/2011 13:58

I think slaughtering women is a great plan! At least we wouldn't have to listen to them whining and nagging. Or should we just cut their vocal chords so they can still cook the tea?

Tough choices.

TheCrackFox · 08/09/2011 13:58

Oh, no debate is good. You and Bob tell us that all the time.

edd1337 · 08/09/2011 14:00

I know it's good. You reading our posts with rise-tinted glasses isn't

Hullygully · 08/09/2011 14:03

bob, would you mind spelling besmirched properly? It is detracting from your insightful posts.

TheCrackFox · 08/09/2011 14:04

Ed, what are your views on honour killings? I can't wait for an insightful, intelligent viewpoint on the subject.

edd1337 · 08/09/2011 14:06

Don't have a lot to say other than I disagree with them

Take all the "culture" shit away and what are you left with?

A group of human beings who think it's just fine to kill the female half of them because they represent the "honour" of the whole.

Load of shit.

TheCrackFox · 08/09/2011 14:08

You must have something to say? Surely?

Where have any of us tried to claim that men aren't subject to honour codes? Confused

I couldn't give a shit whether honour is used to control human interaction. Women are being killed by people who are supposed to love and cherish them.

If I have misrepresented what you have said it is because you have not constructed your argument very well. Infact your argument is nonsense.

CalatalieSisters · 08/09/2011 14:15

Seems to me that BobBanana is saying something reasonable and is getting rather a lot of stick. Is he not just trying to make a distinction between the notion of honour per se (some social code that constitutes a cultural resource for regulating our relationships with one another) and on the other hand the actual content of the honour codes we have typically been burdened with until now, which reflect patriarchal values be cause they have been formed in patriarchal cultures?

Am I misunderstanding? because I fail to see what's offensive about that.

Hullygully · 08/09/2011 14:16

Menaresubjecttoanhonourcodethattheywrotethatdemandstheykillwomenwhichisjustatadontheoppressiveside,no?

does that help at all?

edd1337 · 08/09/2011 14:17

Crack. Our posts get mininterpreted and misquoted all the time. Badly constructed arguments? Possibly but not always
