and will she be back?

I'm a lurker on these boards but I enjoyed reading Dittany's posts and wondered where she's gone.

has Dittany gone ? aww...

saf...don't you go too Sad

vadasultenfuss · 16/08/2011 18:55

I namechange every few weeks because I post so much on MN and esp the feminism section that a stalker who figured it out could end up know more about me than anyone IRL. That thought is scary!

I agree that we shouldnt use our regular names for meet up threads, it's just too risky.

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 16/08/2011 19:01

If I AM wrong about omarlittlest/ Omar Little then I DO sincerely apologise. BUT it may be worth (if you're a quiet poster) if you notice your name used on there, then change it, just to avoid calls of trollery.

noiamdittany · 16/08/2011 19:01

ok i am truly not sure how to react to this - I feel like a fool both for the spartacus idea and even for apparently being dumb enough for being a fan of the wire .. love mn and frequently read/lurk . actually in my life and work I am a fairly proud feminist and have enjoyed so much watching how this section has grown and developed and would guess i MNHQ would look me up they could confirm this for you. whatever ....

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 16/08/2011 19:08

omar/noiamdittany. I may owe you an apology as you have quite the posting history. However, I would recommend you report Omar Little's posts on Mumsnet Sucks.

evenlessnarkypuffin · 16/08/2011 19:10

One of the strongest arguments against those who don't think we need feminism anymore because 'we're equal now' is sites like the facebook and twitter ones mentioned above. They dislike women so much that they actively seek us out to attack online. They target individual posters.

Sites like those have really opened my eyes to the fact that some men in the UK share exactly the same attitude towards women as those in countries where women have very few rights and no legal protection from physical harm caused by make family members or husbands. I always knew that there were men who regarded women as sex objects but I never realised there were so many who seem to regard women as less than human and actively hate them.

SardineQueen · 16/08/2011 19:13

Hello Dittany! Lovely to see you. You are missed Grin

When you come back are you going to namechange or be Dittany? Or not know yet?

I feel a bit sorry for CaptainNancy at the mo - someone once had a name like mine and it was most confusing!

LindenAvery · 16/08/2011 19:22

Ditto Dittany!

Re: the confusion over Omarlittlest and the Omar Little on the MN Sucks page - maybe people who aren't familiar with The Wire don't get how two different people can have such a similar nickname? For their info, Omar Little is a character (let's face it, the best character) in The Wire.

AnyFucker · 16/08/2011 20:01

saf, do you feel better after that ?

AnyFucker · 16/08/2011 20:01

stay

Omar, I have no idea who you are/aren't, but did just want to say the Spartacus idea is great Grin. I say so, cos I nearly did it myself a while back, and anything I think of is indeed great Grin.

giyadas · 16/08/2011 21:31

I don't think our Omar should have to report something when it's not on mumsnet, she has no responsibility over what someone else with her user name has said elsewhere on the net. Unless you have a very unusual nn then chances are there's someone with your name spouting crap on some site somewhere, and as I said, I think some trolls pick names very similar to existing posters to cause this kind of divide.
Can totally understand why SAF is suspicious though, there are loads of posters at the mo who could easily be dismissed as hairy-handed truckers. (not Omar though imo)
Funny how the troll comments on mumsnet sucks have been deleted when he complained of the same treatment here. There's just no self-awareness present at all is there?

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 16/08/2011 21:47

I think Justice may have deleted them him/herself (anyone here behind that creation?) as Stevie's comments remain, along with Julie's.
It's a shame FB aren't responding to our complaints. Pro-misogyny on FB perhaps? After some of the pages that have stayed up, I wouldn't be suprised.

AnyFucker · 16/08/2011 22:05

you expect FB to make a stand on this kinda stuff ?

bloody hell...think again

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 16/08/2011 22:13

I know, AF... There's so much on FB that goes "reported" again, and again, yet goes ignored. Just have to look at the Alleyway thing to see that. BUT when it's infringing on user's feelings of safety, then what? We're already having users talking about posting attendance at events under different names. We already have users thinking of leaving cos they can't face being targeted.

AnyFucker · 16/08/2011 22:15

I know

but FB is the work of the devil (cliche alert)

the sad thing is, names being dragged from here to there, so peeps not even being given the choice

it fucking stinks

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 16/08/2011 22:21

It's really making my blood boil atm. Really is. But it's not just on FB. It's in twitter, wordpress, youtube...

There must be a way MN can block their IP addresses so they can't view the website or something. I'd rather that valued members weren't driven away.

giyadas · 16/08/2011 22:46

All feminist spaces have had to deal with this. The only way to slow ti down if not stop it would be to either charge to use MN or approve comments before they're published, both of which would harm MN.
It makes me so angry, mras have many sites where they spew the most vile stuff with impunity. We don't go over there to disrupt them (though they do mostly only allow approved comments despite all the Free Speech crap they spout when they're here) but they can't allow us to do our own thing.
This is a rant which I know I'm not really entitled to as I don't participate much but I'm an avid lurker who gets a lot from MN so feel protective towards it. Only really found my voice when I saw other posters who I really respect being hounded away.
But ultimately it's down to the Mn owners whether anything can be done, but they don't seem to take it seriously, the same way they didn't when posters on the SN boards were being trolled and complaining.

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 16/08/2011 22:52

You're as entitled to a rant as anyone else, giyadas. Doesn't matter how often you post.

See, MN has always (as far as I've been aware) been free. Very few forums charge use so they couldn't go down that route. Also, the problem with having to pre-approve comments would be that it would be giving someone the upper hand on what we can and can't say. It's a double edged sword. We either lose entitlement to discuss what we want, argue how we want etc, or we keep on getting trolled. And it's not. fucking. fair.

giyadas · 16/08/2011 22:59

What I don't get is some trolls are so obvious yet nothing is done. If there's nothing to deter them from signing up then there should be something in place to have them removed once they have signed up and started to make a nuisance of themselves. We're told to report but then nothing is done. No it isn't fair, we don't bother them, yet they won't leave us alone.
