Was Bristol Palin raped?

darleneoconnor · 20/06/2011 11:16

according to this bristol palin was so drunk when she conceived her son that she doesn't remember having sex.

Sounds like rape to me.

Then she was basically 'forced' to marry her rapist? WTF! Sometimes America sounds more like the middle east!

Quite a few forums are discussing this, with some

disgusting rape myths on this forum

Yes dittany i did. Are you denying some women go out on the pull for sex? Just like men. Its hardly shocking. You seem to think women are passive sexually.

I must be misunderstanding this thread because, for the life of me (and talking in general rather than the specifics of Bristol and Levi), I seem to be reading that if a drunk woman and a drunk man consent to have sex together, and they both subsequently admit that they were too drunk to make that consent reliable (which could be, according to some here, any more than a couple of drinks) and/or memorable, then the woman is the victim of a serious crime that the man has perpetrated on her.

Please tell me I have misunderstood because, on the face of it, that's madness.

TheBossofMe · 23/06/2011 10:32

Yes we should also be telling our daughters not to have sex with drunk men or they might be accussed of sexual assault.

However, since this is the feminism section, on this thread I'm more interested in discussing the rather more common occurrence of men sexual assaulting and raping women.

Riveninside · 23/06/2011 10:33

Seems to be the case snorbs and if you argue differently you are a rap apologist Hmm

It may be the feminist section but men need feminist training too. Therefore a feminist section should not be about potraying all men as misogynistic rapists. I have tried to raise my sons with a feminist awareness. They reac feminist issues.

16 as the age of consent is a purely arbitrary figure. I don't give a shit what age people have sex as long as they are happy and protected.

And I have certainly gone out with specifically predatory intentions.

Hullygully · 23/06/2011 10:42

Not all male sexual predators are rapists. Not if the woman/man consents.

Hullygully · 23/06/2011 10:43

I think the main problem with the thread is that there are different agendas going on.

Riveninside · 23/06/2011 10:45

I think we use language differently. I think going on the pull is predatory. Its being on the hunt for a bloke for a shag.

TrilllianAstra · 23/06/2011 10:46

I agree with Hully

Children below a certain age are not capable of giving consent, therefore we set an arbitrary limit and say "legally only people over this age can give consent".

Plenty of teenagers under 16 (or under 18, depending on the country/state) are legally underage but perfectly capable of giving informed consent. We can talk about Gillick competence if you like, which relates to children being deemed mature enough to consent or not consent to medical procedures, rather than it being the parents' decision.

I think the main problem with the thread is that there are different agendas going on.

Hullygully · 23/06/2011 10:49

And some are concerned to be cautious and just.

TheBossofMe · 23/06/2011 10:49

This isn't just about drunken party type sex though, is it? Its about a child, a child, who was so drunk she couldn't remember anything, who had previously said to her boyfriend that she didn't want to have sex before marriage, having her vagina penetrated with a penis whilst drunk, in all likelihood to drunk to give consent. Yes we don't know the full story, but I do know that if my DD had come home and said this had happened, I'd be calling the police. And if my DS came home and said he'd done the same thing, then god help me, I'd probably be calling the police too.

Hullygully · 23/06/2011 10:50

So, based on the snippet of interview, would you be happy for Levi to be arrested and charged?

Hullygully · 23/06/2011 10:51

With respect Boss, you don't know any of that. Extrapolation is dangerous in all cases. One should refrain whether it concerns men or women.

karmakameleon · 23/06/2011 10:53

Nobody is suggesting that he be arrested and charged on the basis of the interview. Presumably Bristol doesn't want that anyway. But even if she did, or it was decided to go ahead in the public interest, every would expect proper evidence gathering and witness statements.

Hullygully · 23/06/2011 10:54

So why is it all right to say in advance of due process that she was raped and thus call him a rapist?
