Since it looks like the first chat thread is about to fill up, here's the next one all ready and waiting.

Think of it as the gated commune with babysitting on demand and gorgeous poolboys serving the drinks :o

I had a jolt the other week when there were two female CBeebies presenters on duty together!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 15/03/2011 10:48

It's weird isn't it? You go "yay!...oh hang on, that means this is still something to actually notice"

Re: University Challenge, AFAIK it's a matter of putting yourself forward for the teams, and (actually they were saying this at the law event at the WOW festival this weekend), women often don't put themselves forward. WHY that is, is the question.

Most clever student women have better things to do than show off their knowledge for the benefit of us sofa surfers at home? Grin

ChristinedePizan · 15/03/2011 16:54

I think a lot of men still get annoyed when women know something they don't. When was the last time you heard a bloke being called a swot? Men are clever, women are swotty. :(

But yes it is really odd when you realise how very immune you become to an all male presence. And rather depressing.

(it's LadyBiscuit here by the way - I changed my name which I mentioned on one thread but can't remember if it was this one or not). Just don't want everyone thinking 'who the fuck is that??' :o

I am loving your namechange LadyB.
I have trouble with all those Lady names.

ChristinedePizan · 15/03/2011 17:39

Oh good, glad you like and know who she is :) It was only ever about the biscuit - I hate the term 'lady' so I don't really know why I chose it. Was running away from an earlier name in a hurry I dimly recall :o

I'd considered it, but it was a bit too similar to another user's name

AliceWorld · 16/03/2011 21:50

For anyone who recalls the soot sup-lie (hope you get that, don't want to give them the hits) issue at west field shopping centre in London before xmas, they're at it again. You can see on their website the type of pics, and some are in their window. They seem to be going for both sexism and racism this time Hmm. I think west field need reminding to keep an eye on their traders...

(Glad the spelling adjustments make sense Smile)

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 16/03/2011 22:17

they make me feel physically sick.
kind of thing that makes me want to take up vandalism.

BertieBotts · 16/03/2011 22:23

Hello, I've been meaning to jump in on this thread for a while. Don't really know what else to say Grin

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 16/03/2011 22:27

Hi

I'm relatively new here but was really getting into the 'Resisting Femininity' thread. Where has it gone? Is it just me? I can't find it anywhere.

MummyBerryJuice · 17/03/2011 19:53

Found it. Though only on my phone. Strangely cannot see the thread on my laptop at all.

Very reminiscent of this mornings twitter experience...

AyeRobot · 17/03/2011 20:21

Hi all.

Just wanted to write down my ugh at that Junior Docs programme. Watching the latest one and Suzi (who, in my non qualified opinion is a bloody excellent doctor) has had her name on the rosta changed to Barbie, coloured in pink. She is very rightly pissed off about it, but of course the attitude seems to be along the lines of "can't you take a joke?". (I think it will pan out to be a "well, all your stuff is pink" justification.) I just wanted her to hear a cacophony of FeMNists shouting "yes, it is perfectly reasonable for you to be upset by this".

Grin I had inspiration via my angry red mist.

vezzie · 18/03/2011 14:46

yes, big up AyeRobot for FeMNists.

Is this an ok place to put a rant? [carries on without waiting for an answer]

This is my last day at work before maternity leave. I have 2 weeks before my EDD, and 5 weeks holiday allowance in 2011. I have just been told I can take the 2 weeks instead of the 1st 2 weeks of mat leave and will lose the rest - there is no time to take it and they have a new policy which means that untaken holiday can't be paid or carried over.

So - if they get their way - I will have worked for 3 weeks for free, while my daughter is in childcare, and I am exhausted and can barely walk.

They will not get their way.

However, of the potential solutions to this cock up (theirs) doing someone out of 3 weeks of their life should surely not be on the list at all, let alone the first option they try to foist upon you.

As this situation directly relates to maternity leave and as I am tenuously relating it to my favourite "people think women should work for free" hypothesis, I am taking up space here to moan about it.

I shouldn't have to fight to be paid for my work EVER, let alone when I am about to have a baby!

notenoughsocks · 18/03/2011 15:25

Don't know where else to post but reading that Seth did a 'semi-classics PhD' gave me the idea that there might be lots of people around who might be able to help.
There is a document in the Bodelian which I would really like to see/ref. I live miles and miles and miles away and it is one of those documents that they are not allowed to reproduce (even though it is not old or pretty - just a letter I think).
Anyhow, is there anywhere to advertise for somebody to go there with a pencil for me to let me know what the relevant paragraph says?

I know this is well cheeky, but it might be worth it.

notenoughsocks · 19/03/2011 22:59

Just to mention that I am now supplied with very helpful tips on where I might be able to find willing researchers. Thanks Smile
