Since it looks like the first chat thread is about to fill up, here's the next one all ready and waiting.

Think of it as the gated commune with babysitting on demand and gorgeous poolboys serving the drinks :o

Just want to check something

On another thread someone has said that the right for women to vote in the Uk was won by men. I'm sure that's not right? But I don't know enough history to know what to say. That's not true, surely, is it?

SybilBeddows · 06/05/2011 17:58

presumably they just mean that MPs voted for it and at the time MPs were nearly all men. (I have a feeling women could be MPs before they could vote - not sure though.) What point was this person trying to make?

SardineQueen · 06/05/2011 18:04

They seemed to be saying that women's efforts were hopeless and counter-productive and they didn't do much, and that it was working men who really fought and won the right for women to vote.

That doesn't tie in with the books I've seen with women marching etc.

It seems a bit naughty to link but at least one person has read it and said how interesting and informative it is.

I wish I knew how to respond as I'm sure that if women hadn't said anything that they wouldn't have got the vote. The whole tone of the post is that women were crap and that men did it. It's got me a little annoyed, but it's written in such a knowledgable tone that I don't know what to say in response.

I don't like the idea of the suffragettes being dismissed as a bunch of ineffectual pillocks and actually it was men who fought for women to get the vote.

SardineQueen · 06/05/2011 18:10

Oh so that's why I didn't link Grin as it seems naughty.

SardineQueen · 06/05/2011 18:12

Oh gawd now others are joining in to agree that women getting the vote was nothing to do with the efforts of women Confused and I don't know what to say.

oh fgs, here is the link voting thread
I just went and posted and there is deliberate distortion going on but I have got 3 dcs climbing on me who I need to put to bed so I can't respond properly.

if you think it is morally wrong to click on a link, go to AIBU and find the thread about voting with the number 35 on it.

SardineQueen · 06/05/2011 18:49

Grin @ sybil getting shirty at my reticence!

I am just aware that it doesn't look good when it looks like people are rallying others for support IYSWIM

It is a distorted picture isn't it? I just don't know my history well enough to address it IYSWIM

SybilBeddows · 06/05/2011 18:56

sorry Blush

I am cross with the people on the thread and it came out as snappy at you.

I don't care what people think about us piling on tbh. It's reasonable enough to think 'there are people in another section who know about this stuff, I will go and ask them.' If I didn't have 2 dcs and a dh yacking in my ear all at the same time (why does dh do that?) I would pull out my Sheila Rowbotham and check facts.

Dittany has posted, yay! Am wishing I hadn't been so diffident in what I said.

Nice to see you all there doing some sterling work!

History is really not my strong point...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 07/05/2011 01:48

I love it when people call in the feminist cavalry :o

I quite like the idea of being "a hub to send out sorties to the rest of MN"!

Naughty sorties....

Agree, the netiquette is maybe questionable. But hell, sometimes things just need to be said and if no one else is saying them.....

InmaculadaConcepcion · 07/05/2011 09:24

...being in a hub, ahem, not the hub itself....

SybilBeddows · 07/05/2011 11:01

am going to resist the temptation to send anti-high-heel sorties to Style and Beauty every time someone mentions Louboutins....

I was in a 'which of these dresses shall I buy?' thread recently and the OP linked to the shoes she was going to wear with them and everyone else was going 'OMG they're gorgeous.'
I stepped away from the thread....

I bloody loved I Blame the Patriarchy's take on the W&K's wedding: or Obscene British Patriarchy-fest as she puts it.

SybilBeddows · 09/05/2011 17:44

I was VERY disappointed we didn't talk about the royal wedding at my feminism group on Sunday.
we just discussed worth activism type things. I think I will have to secede.

SybilBeddows · 09/05/2011 17:44

oh that's really really crap.
we have a few men on the FB group but none have ever come to meetings.
I presume you didn't go to the S&M one....
