Since it looks like the first chat thread is about to fill up, here's the next one all ready and waiting.

Think of it as the gated commune with babysitting on demand and gorgeous poolboys serving the drinks :o

Nice Sarah Brown quote. I'd wager she's here a fair bit

seth, as it happens, I did just sign up to WordPress this afternoon. The free bit, not the self-hosted paid-for .org bit, which I don't think I'm really ready for. I haven't posted anything yet, but I've made a list of posts I want to do. Also have a fast-growing reading list.

Missed C4 news tonight but it is so irksome when there's a vox pop of someone saying something vacuous and completely getting away with it - I always want to grab them by the lapel and set them straight. I'm sure the editors chose Ms Fairly Equal for that very reason. She, on the other hand, probably thinks her clip was used because she has an excellent point.

Unwind · 08/03/2011 21:46

Wouldn't it be great if Sarah Brown and her family turned up on the crafty camping trip Grin

they would be very welcome, as long as they don't bring their good friend Piers Morgan along Hmm

Unwind · 08/03/2011 22:05

I am giggling away at the thought of Piers Morgan in a tent on the mumsnet feminist crafty camping trip

Please don't make me share a tent with Piers Morgan. I'll do cockroaches instead :)

Unrulysun · 09/03/2011 21:37

I e-mailed the woman who organised the conference I was talking about today and said it was a brilliant idea to get someone to talk about women in leadership but that this woman was maybe not the right person and that if she wanted me to I would organise a session to look at how to eradicate sexism from leadership. Don't know if she will but I've offered :)

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 10/03/2011 15:36

well done UnrulySun!

Hey Sakura

I've just seen the news, how are things there, I hope your family are all safe.

I see it is a long way from Tokyo but buildings shook in the capital - unbelievable - thinking of you and everyone affected at the moment x

sakura · 11/03/2011 07:52

Hi SQ, I've been out all day, UNbelievable that I first heard about the tsunami on MN. I just clicked on the link posted in another topic and saw the BBC images from there.
I'm in the south, but it looks like there will be a death toll in the north, how could there not be.

SardineQueen · 11/03/2011 07:57

No need to reply on the other thread as well! i have found you here.

I think it looks like a pretty major disaster doesn't it. Awful.

Glad you're okay sakura. It seems like it's going to affect a lot of people :(

steamedtreaclesponge · 11/03/2011 13:40

The aerial shots of the tsunami are shocking. We have the TV on in our office and it's hard to look away - I'm just hoping people got out in time.

On a different note, has anyone seen this article about 40 years of women's lib in the Guardian today? Starts with the best sentence ever:

"Last year started slow and snowy, the office was deserted for the holiday season, and I sat alone at my desk wondering how to carry out my New Year's resolution: to crush the patriarchy."

Was hoping to log on and see that you are safe Sakura. Smile

DirtyMartini · 12/03/2011 14:10

Hope things are still OK with you today, sakura. Horrible situation - the more we see of it, the worse it appears.

steamed, I can't get that link to work - is it just me? Great opener, though. Will search for the article.

I have started my blog :) - the one I mentioned down thread. I did it last night. Twitter, too.

I have, however, asked (with some regret) for the thread I started that led to the idea for the blog to be deleted. And I don't think I'll link the blog here just now either. I'm planning to show it to some people in RL, and although I'm not bothered if some MNers work out that my blog and MN names go together (I've even followed some MNers on Twitter), I don't want to risk a slow slide into a situation where acquaintances in RL can potentially identify me on MN. It's annoying but I've had some issues with that in the past, so I need to think it through carefully.

At some point I'll probably decide to just be totally open about everything, but not just yet.

Sorry to bang on about it, but I felt slightly guilty requesting an innocent feminism thread be deleted, so wanted to state for the record that there was no sinister reason for its removal.

DirtyMartini · 12/03/2011 14:15

Oh, I suppose for the same reason I ought to ask for my initial post earlier on this thread to be deleted too. Arse.

I'll leave it a bit and then do that; no rush. Hate to punch holes in a chat thread people are still using.

steamed, I got that link to work after all, so it was obv my connection at fault. Just about to read it.

I am just going to have a mini rant about
University Challenge! Minor I know, but where are the women on these teams? How do these teams get chosen? Women must make up about half the population of students so why aren't they making up half the teams? Is it some old boys network or something? If two of the contestants i.e. 25% of them are women then that is unusual. And I am sure it has got worse.

And breathe...

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 14/03/2011 21:02

I know!

I am always grumbling 'Look, no women again'.
And yet the last time there was one of those super-brilliant contestants who renders the rest of their team superfluous it was a woman, Gail Trimble.

DirtyMartini · 14/03/2011 21:12

And she got such a lot of unwelcome press attention, it was pretty scary IIRC.
