The point is not whether it's necessary for a particular man to have a wank or not. The point is should the NHS be paying for jizz mags? Er, no, they shouldn't.

nearlytoolate · 08/09/2010 21:12

It might be necessary (or at least a help) to SOME people. Its not compulsory to use it, obviously.
I have to say I can think of higher priorities in a campaign against porn than this particular one. IVF is not exactly a bundle of laughs.

HAve asked dh and he said that it was not remotely the worst thing about the experience. Its a rather depersonalising and clinical experience altogether - and the last thing I would have felt like was giving him a hand Hmm

nearlytoolate · 08/09/2010 21:16

well i hardly think cutting back on these is going to make much impact on NHS efficiency savings!
And all fertility clinics take a lot of private patients anyway so not necessarily NHS money being used. We certainly didn't get anywhere near being offered NHS treatment.

Fatbob · 08/09/2010 21:25

I'm going to buy some and take them up there for them :)

after all becuase of them we now have a little one on the way :)

DuelingFanjo · 08/09/2010 21:29

Actually - the thread question was "Porn in infertility clinics.....okay?" no mention of the NHS there.

Of course then people started discussing how degrading and offensive porn is. The solution? to let people bring their own in? Because that makes it less offensive and degrading?

DuelingFanjo · 08/09/2010 21:32

Ah - just to say I did;t realise that this thread was started in reaction to a story about the NHS spending £700 on porn!

I am wondering, if I make my own porn and offer it to the NHS (they can pay me if they like) then is that better... a range of no-exploitative porn? I could go on Dragon's den!

BitOfFun · 08/09/2010 21:57

I haven't got very strong feelings about it, to be honest. But it strikes me as something that a man woiuld obviously provide for himself if he needed it. It's hardly a medical necessity, and there's something rather murky about some manager deciding on Porno Of The Month.

blinks · 08/09/2010 21:58

in our cubicle there was nothin save for a framed picture of snowy peaks.

eventually we bargained on a 'penthouse pose' for, ahem, visual stimulus.

DuelingFanjo · 08/09/2010 21:59

I winder if they sell porn magazines in the hospital shops? I would find that weird, but then it might be something they felt they had to do if people were expected to provide their own?

nearlytoolate · 08/09/2010 22:03

BoF, i don't have strong feelings either (and my ds's have their beginnings in these places so i have more reason than most to have an opinion. But frankly given that they nearly weren't here at all, its small fry). But there is no way my dh would have provided his own - that would have been way more sordid. It wouldn't have occurred to him either. He doesn't normally use the stuff, its just a strange situation in which one does things that are not what you would normally do. As I said, making a baby the IVF way is not remotely romantic nor does it have anything in common with the 'normal' experience.

Fatbob · 08/09/2010 22:39

i give up, was a link to the IVF baby clothes that say my dad is a wanker.

BitOfFun · 08/09/2010 22:40

I don't recommend clicking on those links. My laptop is already fucked after following a link from MN a couple of nights ago. I'm going to have to pay to get it fixed.

Fatbob · 08/09/2010 22:56

A: the links don't work
B: if they worked it would be to a picture hence .jpg at the end.
C: do you not use any software to stop that happening? what kind of link would make your laptop need to get fixed?
D: i recommend getting a man to look at if for you before you pay ;)

BitOfFun · 08/09/2010 23:16

blah blah blah. Yeah to C. Malwarebytes has been scunnered by it. And I believe some techs are women.

loopyloops · 09/09/2010 00:04

Ah, but she didn't say "get a tech", did she?

A man has mystical properties that allow him to cure viruses of the computer kind, which slowly build up in his body until he can bear them no longer. The result of this is called "man flu".

Beachcomber · 09/09/2010 08:34

PMSL at man flu origins.

Anyway, jizz mags - offensive things that the NHS has no business providing or endorsing.

Up to the man to provide his own and I think there should be a notice in the cubicles asking the men to make sure they take their mags away with them. I don't think the female staff should have to put up with having sexist wank fodder lying about in their working environment.

jenny60 · 09/09/2010 09:40

Beachcomber: you are a genius Smile

sanielle · 09/09/2010 09:56

As has been said, IVF isn't the only reason men have to give sperm samples. We didn't have IVF but my husband was tested for fertility issues. I was told by our doctor, not to "help" I could contaminate the sample. Luckily we only live 10mins away so DH could do it in the privacy of his own home. He went and watched porn with the door closed as he was embarrasesed and felt pressured with me on the other side of the door. I think having to do it on demand in a store cupboard would be horrible and I could understand the need for visual stimulation and also why partners needen't be allowed in the room.

Beachcomber · 09/09/2010 11:32

Jenny I have been over thinking jizz in general on the porn thread. I think I may write a thesis "Jizzing : past and present, how to turn a bodily function into a tool of oppression.

No pun intended Grin.

jenny60 · 09/09/2010 12:25

Jesus, I know, the things I've been thinking about while I've been reading this .... (I like the pun)

DSM · 09/09/2010 13:32

How ridiculous to suggest a man bring his own porn. As if that's going to make everyone feel better in the situation. Fgs, it's a hard enough situation to be in without making someone go into a shop for a cheap porn mag before they get to the clinic.

But as I said before, I don't have an issue with porn, don't think it's sexist or degrading. Men do porn too, so sexist? Hmm.
