So what do we think?

Should be a case of BYO if necessary. I don't see why it should be provided- not all men wank to porn anyway.

Like I said earlier...

there was gay porn in the cubicle my DH used. Presumably Gay men do donate sperm or give samples for theri own children to be born through IVF.

So is that offensive?

I think most people that get in to porn are being exploited male or female so same goes for gay porn IMO.
Porn is not ok, for a government organisation to condone it is wrong. But then again, they allow it to be on display to children in newsagents so unlikely they'll see fit to stop it being allowed in adult clinics...

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 08/09/2010 17:32

Much as I object to a lot (probably most) pornography, it seems a little churlish to withold it from a chap trying to ejaculate to order, within a limited period and in less than conducive surroundings.

BitOfFun · 08/09/2010 17:35

I don't think anybody is withholding anything. Just expecting him to use his own, if that's what it takes.

UnquietDad · 08/09/2010 17:37

Moral implications aside, I wouldn't really want to crack a sample out over some copy of Razzle lying on the side which had already been, ahem, used by other sperm donor gentlemen that same day.

The phrase used by the phone-in listener today on Jeremy Vine was "dog-eared." Small [boak].

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 08/09/2010 17:56

Bleurgh!

DSM · 08/09/2010 18:13

I thnk it's safe to assume that most people can't just 'produce' on demand without any stimulation, particularly visually for men as they have a higher reception for visual stimuli. Therefore, porn in fertility clinics seems okay to me.

Plus if I was ever in the position of needing to visit one, I imagine i'd have bigger concerns than the materials that were being provided to assist with the wank.

But then, I don't have any issues with porn anyway, so that might by why I wouldn't care.

UnquietDad · 08/09/2010 18:54

A woman on the same phone-in described herself as "desperate" for a baby - and yet still couldn't contemplate the idea of her DH knocking one out to some porn in the cubicle, as she couldn't bear the thought that "our baby might be the result of his thinking about some other woman and not me."

I so very nearly phoned up and said "It's okay, love, he probably thinks about someone else while you are having sex anyway."

UnePrune · 08/09/2010 19:00

Ha ha I might go downstairs and ask DH what he was thinking about when he gave the relevant sample.
I know that as I was having a syringe stuck through my cervix, I wasn't thinking about him Hmm

DuelingFanjo · 08/09/2010 19:03

UD, that's just bizzare. When I was going through IVF I really didn't mind the fact that DH was in a room with porn when he produced his sample. I had other more important things on my mind.

Hulababy · 08/09/2010 19:08

Saw thread on his in In the News

My thought on it when I heard about it on JL was "urgh; a dog-eared pre-used magazine."

Maybe partners should be permitted into the rooms with the men in order to help them instead.

Or some way of being able to the deed at home and bring the sample in in some way quick and "fresh" enough.

Of the men I am aware of who have been for sperm counts/fertility tests they have to produce in the clinic as a prescribed appointment time, and have to go in alone.

I can't imagine a sterile room just off from the main corridor, within hearing of those passing by outside is the most arousing or stimulating of environments.

Definitely, allow partners in to help.

Or, you know, appointed rep if DW is held up at work. (Cheryl Cole will do.)

It's easy for me to be flippant about this. DW and I have two lovely children and don't want any more. We had a miscarriage, which was awful, but never had any trouble conceiving. I can't begin to imagine what going through IVF is like.

azazello · 08/09/2010 19:26

It can be difficult getting to the clinic so the sample is fresh enough - I think they certainly like it within an hour which could be tricky in London (having a wank in the loos at work is probably even less conducive than in the clinic).

When we were going through IVF, I had enough appointments and wasted hours in the clinic on my own account, I really don't think I would have appreciated DH needing me to help him especially while I was in recovery following egg collection etc.

DuelingFanjo · 08/09/2010 19:30

Right - obviously not many of you understand what is involved on the day a couple go to the IVF clinic for egg collection/sample collection!

When you have IVF/ICSI your partner (the man) has to give a sperm Sample at the same time, or around the same time, that you (the woman) are having your eggs collected. To collect the eggs they sedate you and give you a pain killer and then they stick a needle into you via your vagina. Prior to this you have been on some pretty heavy fertility drugs in the days leading up to the egg collection.

Personally - having been through it myself - I much prefer the idea that my husband be able to produce his sample with the aid of a few magazines than having to stress about giving him a hand myself minutes before going through an egg collection!

As for sperm donors, I can't think that many of them would want to bring their partner (if they have one) into the clinic to help them with their sample.

Added to this - the sample has to make it from teh man's penis into a very small pot. Introducing another set of hands into this tricky situation is not really going to make it any easier to get a sample.

Hulababy · 08/09/2010 19:33

I was referring to sperm collected for reasons other than IVf etc when it takes place at the same time.

UnquietDad · 08/09/2010 19:36

She doesn't have to be there to use her hands.

Without porn i would have been in the ages.

given 3-4 samples now and one for the IVF.

I think it's great that you all know so much about what men do and don't need.

Wink
DuelingFanjo · 08/09/2010 19:42

"She doesn't have to be there to use her hands."

ha ha

Do you mean she can do a little dance? Because I can't imagine using her mouth would give them teh kind of sample they could use.

Alouiseg · 08/09/2010 19:43

Why can't I get upset about porn mags? Should I ?

DSM · 08/09/2010 19:52

No alouise, if porn doesn't offend you then don't allow others to persuade you otherwise.
