The Roots of Misogyny

Why is practically every human society across all times, places and cultures dominated by men?
I have read that War on Women article that MillyR linked to. It's chilling. Why is it everywhere?

I would be interested in your thoughts, or maybe there is actually a simple, widely accepted answer that I could be pointed to.

swallowedafly, your posts are great on this thread, thanks.

Swallowedafly;

what do you think would happen if the whole male species disappeared overnight....(forget the baby thing for a moment...and the human race dying out)...

who would be in charge?

The strongest (and probably more violent) women.

I was thinking about this a few weeks ago. I read some stuff where the person had come to the conclusion that the roots of misogyny lie in men's insecurity and fear of rejection but I'm sure it's more complex than that.

funnily enough i was thinking 'oooooh, dampened and lengthened oestrus?' not even kidding.

MarshaBrady · 31/07/2010 10:16

Oh no do say Swallowed. And MillyR your posts are interesting.

(sorry not much to add).

Yes I can see that the power could come from the potential to withhold the ability to reproduce...

daftpunk · 31/07/2010 10:17

I don't think is more sophisticated tbh....even today we sort out problems with war/violence/threats....y'know...play the game our way or we'll invade and attack.

That's the "male" way....

MarshaBrady · 31/07/2010 10:19

Nowadays it's not physical strength but money which equals choices and power. Typically the man has this. post-dc.

daftpunk · 31/07/2010 10:34

I'm not bothered that the world is dominated by men, like I said, if men disappeard the world would be dominated by the most forceful women...there's always someone in charge. marriages/partnerships are never 100% equal are they.

I think we should except our differences and just get on with it. feminism has cause alot of problems imo, especially within the family.

I'm a big fan of Erin Pizzey...I think she talks alot of sense.

Aitch · 31/07/2010 10:53

fascinating, swallowedafly, so there will have been a tipping point where we would have evolved to increase the genetic base of our societies, because something, what, our genes? understood that it was necessary for advancement?

don't get stressed by daftpunk, swallowed, she's a wind up merchant, regardless of what she says about being 'just another poster' etc.

dittany;

I'm just trying to point out that women can be just as violent and controlling as men, and that militant feminists have done alot of damage to society....imo.

Apologies in advance for very unread opinion here and lack of eloquence but...

When these men were sitting about in caves chatting and creating porn on pebbles while the women ground flour etc. was misogyny really at play?

I have to assume here because of a total lack of anthropological knowledge, that the men at some point during the day would have been hunting, defending, building, etc. using their masculine strength (physical) and mental skill (different/better attributed to certain tasks not superior). Is that a problem? Is that misogyny? Won't the women have been using their skills in the most efficient way too? Is it wise to hunt or build or defend when your muscle ratio is less than the males' your stamina lesser? Is it better to use your female empathetically biased brain to care for the children etc?

Surely misogyny comes when the defending, the hunting and gathering and so on becomes less about muscle and strength and more concerned with a broad spectrum of skills held by males and females as in the modern workplace - the place where the hunting and gathering now takes place and yet women do not have the same opportunities as men. Men prefer to believe that the role of provider can only be fulfilled by a male because once, realistically that was true.

So maybe the roots lie in being unable to let go of a past when men legitimately provided this function and it is our creation of a society that now relies on a greater depth of skills and less on physical strength to function and succeed.

Man's brawn is no longer the only thing that keeps us fed and alive and misogyny is just a failure to adapt to the reality of one's skills and instincts no longer being essential to survival.

Did I make any point there at all?

Aitch · 31/07/2010 11:22

oh yes, good ones.
