I just thought it would be nice to have a thread on people waiting for smear results

I've just had my first one and currently waiting two weeks , I'm quite anxious as they found cervix ecropian and I've been having bleeding after sex

Anyone interested in joining for a hand hold and to support each other?

@butterflykiss00 oh great...so you're still none the wiser of what's going on! Are you still have symptoms?

Yeah I am pretty pissed off but kinda pleased that swabs have been taken today so I'm not waiting another week to see a doctor then another week for the results. I'm wondering if the swabs show any other infections or just the STI's. I am starting to panic a little though.
But what I'm most annoyed about is all this hype about getting a smear test, make sure you listen to your body and spot the signs...then they won't give you a test when you're having problems! What's all that about! Unbelievable.

butterflykiss00 · 08/04/2019 21:25

Nope :( and the spotting settled down for now first day it's stopped ! Hopefully that's it, although I did google and the lesions are usually retained placenta but ultrasound man said there isn't any tissue left over, so god knows what it is 🙄

Yea because they would of just done the swabs then and made you wait again, they'll be for other infections too not just Sti's. Try not to panic I know it's easier said than done though. It's ridiculous, they do always say if you have any symptoms come and get one , I'm just so surprised the arnt doing anything for you! Bastards , it's on their toes if they is something wrong!

The thing is, isn't the smear test a test for any abnormal changes to the cervix and not actually a test for cancer?

butterflykiss00 · 09/04/2019 21:04

@LizaCarlisle that's what I was thinking , but surely cancer would be obvious by sight of it was advanced?

OP posts:
LizaCarlisle · 10/04/2019 06:49

@butterflykiss00 oh yes, I expect the nurse would know if something was untoward while carrying out your smear test. But it does say on your invitation that the smear test isn't a test for cancer and if you have any symptoms to see your GP who can refer to you the relevant channels for investigation Hmm

butterflykiss00 · 10/04/2019 07:04

Hmmit's strange that the smear wouldn't pick it all up, obviously for ovary and womb cancer it makes sense though x

OP posts:
emily199027 · 10/04/2019 20:00

Cancer?!
Anyway, I haven't had a letter for a smear. I rang the doctors and explained my symptoms to the receptionist and asked if I could get an early smear test...she should have been the one to tell me I needed a doctors appointment and couldn't have a smear test.

@butterflykiss00 when are you seeing a Gynaecologist? Any news on that yet?

emily199027 · 10/04/2019 20:01

@butterflykiss00 p.s have they mentioned anything about hormonal imbalance? Could it be anything to do with that?

butterflykiss00 · 10/04/2019 21:10

@emily199027 I forgot to ring doctors to sort it out I will tomorrow and hen probably a wait for a letter Hmm

That's a good point never thought of that! Il have a naughty google and mention it when I ring tomorrow.

Why haven't they sent u a bloody letter, can u not get the doctor to ring you?

OP posts:
emily199027 · 10/04/2019 21:20

@butterflykiss00 hormone imbalance was something the nurse mentioned to me so seeing as we're having the same symptoms I thought it might be worth mentioning!
My periods still not arrived but I'm still spotting here and there...it's more like pinky discharge though 😕

Doctor might ring me on Friday if the results from the swabs are back and shows infection...but if I don't get a call I'm guessing they'll tell me the next step when I get an appointment next week...which I'm assuming will be the scan 😩😩

BelaLug0si · 10/04/2019 21:26

@emily199027 yes the receptionist should have said told you to make a doctor's appointment instead.
Screening tests are not diagnostic tests - as LizaCarlisle said, it is in the invitation letter.
Having a smear done only delays more appropriate investigations - and may not show the problem causing your symptoms. Smears are not 100% accurate (which it also says in the invitation leaflet). Unfortunately there is a very small possibility of getting a clear smear result when you have cervical cancer. This is because sometimes the cancer cells are very difficult to see in the sample, or the cancer is in a place difficult to sample so no cancer cells are present in the sample which is read in the lab.
This is why there is the emphasis on making appointments to discuss symptoms / investigations rather than just asking for a smear test.
There is also the issue that the screening service does try to plan for the tests that are predicted to be taken, based on the number of invitations sent out. If loads of extra people turn up then it takes longer to process the samples.
Although the current screening campaign is really excellent at reminding people who are overdue to attend for screening, it has unfortunately come at a time when labs are losing staff due to the re-organisation (most labs will close) this year.

All of this is why I post information to prompt people to ask for appropriate investigations, so whatever the issue turns out to be, you aren't waiting around pending a test which may not relate to your problem at all.

Women are called for screening every 3 years between 25 - 49, then every 5 years between 49 - 65. The first invitation is sent around 24.5 to try to get people to come for a test by the time they're 25. Invitation letters are sent about 6 - 8 weeks before the 3 years since your last test if was ok). E.g. last test was 1/10/16 then the invitation would be sent mid/late August.

butterflykiss00 · 10/04/2019 21:28

@emily199027 mine was the same but stopped the other day although still a slight red tinge to my discharge , I haven't had a period since before I was pregnant and I gave birth in December,
I hope they find out what's wrong with us!! I had to have an internal scan which wasn't bad really and he seen the white patches on the womb but said it isn't retained placenta x

OP posts:
emily199027 · 10/04/2019 21:41

@butterflykiss00 are you breast feeding?

I've been told the scans aren't too bad...but taking the swaps was quite uncomfortable the other day. I suppose the best I can hope for is an infection?!

What other symptoms have you got?

butterflykiss00 · 10/04/2019 21:51

No bottle feeding, the swabs were uncomfortable for me too , the smear was aswell . Yeah that's what I wanted too 😂 I think I would rather have an infection than an unexplained bleeding tag on my name haha, 🤞🏼 it's nothing serious for any of us x

OP posts:
emily199027 · 10/04/2019 22:01

Keeping everything crossed it's just our bodies doing strange things 😩 I don't think I've ever missed a period before. They've been so different recently too but I just put that down to having a c section last year and my body getting over it...but that's nearly a year ago now so I can't see it's that.

Just trying to keep myself occupied and trying to stay away from google 😂 x

butterflykiss00 · 10/04/2019 22:18

Yea a year is a long time for the c section to be the cause imo, hopefully it is but I kinda want an answer , just not a bad one

That's the hardest thing with google, I'm nearly an expert on womb, ovary and cervical cancer now 😂😂

X

Sorry to jump in ladies. I’ve been reading the thread with interest as I have suddenly become very irregular so booked a smear for next week. Am I right in thinking though that I should be going to the gp instead as my last smear was only 2.5 years ago?

butterflykiss00 · 11/04/2019 07:17

@mynameisMrG hello it depends if your doctors has a smear drop in service or by appointment only, if it has a drop in you could explain to the nurse there and she would tell you, if not just book an appointment with go and explain your symptoms.
Good luck with the test & results.

By irregular is it the amount/time ?

OP posts:
emily199027 · 11/04/2019 07:29

@mynameisMrG the nurse I saw told me that they won't give you smear unless you've received the letter calling you for one. Mine isn't due till September so that's why she couldn't do one!
It's a doctors appointment that's needed to investigate apparently. But it may be different in your area!
Have you had bleeding between periods/after sex too?

emily199027 · 11/04/2019 07:30

@butterflykiss00 me too 😂 that's the worrying thing though isn't it...all the symptoms lead to one of those 😕 I've been feeling sick a lot recently too and completely lost my appetite too

butterflykiss00 · 11/04/2019 08:12

@emily199027 aw no! That's no good ! You'll be exhausted not eating properly x

OP posts:
mynameisMrG · 11/04/2019 13:22

Thank you for your replies. Not been bleeding after sex but have been having two periods a month, not just spotting. I think I’m concerned as when I was pregnant in August they spotted some cyst like growths and made a note to monitor them through the pregnancy. Unfortunately the pregnancy didn’t go until full term so the monitoring stopped. Maybe I’ll go to the gp and discuss all this to see what they recommend.
I can’t believe long the waiting times are for some of you. Our area quotes two weeks but I haven’t been in over two years so maybe that has changed with the new tests. That’s a long time if you are worried though!

emily199027 · 11/04/2019 15:59

I've had a call from the receptionist at the doctors...they seem to have fobbed me off with thrush....?
I have no symptoms of thrush? The nurse said the other day there was a tiny bit there but nothing to cause an issue...so have I just been totally fobbed off??
