NEW Dickensalong - Martin Chuzzlewit 2024-2025

Come along and join me in the next Dickens readalong.

We have chosen Martin Chuzzlewit which was originally published by Dickens in 19 instalments, all exactly 32 pages long!

I propose condensing this to an eight month read, using Dickens' shorter sections as a guide (this is one fewer than NN). We begin in August, as follows:

August - Chapters 1 - 8
September - Chapters 9-15
October - Chapters 16-23
November - Chapters 24-29
December - Chapters 30-35
January 2025 - Chapters 36-41
February - Chapters 42-47
and finishing in
March 2025 - Chapters 48 - end

This on its publication history is interesting:

The early monthly numbers were not as successful as Dickens's previous work and sold about 20,000 copies each, as compared to 40,000 to 50,000 for the monthly numbers of the Pickwick Papers and Nicholas Nickleby, and 60,000 to 70,000 for the weekly issues of The Old Curiosity Shop. The lack of success of the novel caused a rift between Dickens and his publishers when they invoked a penalty clause in his contract requiring him to pay back money they had lent him to cover their costs.
Dickens responded to the disappointing early sales of the monthly parts compared to sales of previous works as monthly instalments; he changed the plot to send the title character to the United States. This allowed the author to portray the United States, which he had visited in 1842, satirically, as a near-wilderness with pockets of civilisation filled with deceitful and self-promoting hucksters.
Dickens's satire of American modes and manners in the novel won him no friends on the other side of the Atlantic, where the instalments containing the offending chapters were greeted with a "frenzy of wrath". As a consequence Dickens received abusive mail and newspaper clippings from the United States

Summoning old faithfuls and newcomers, one and all!

Thanks Piggy, I’m in!

ChessieFL · 20/07/2024 14:43

Thanks Piggy! Just to check, we’re reading chapters 1-8 during August for discussion on 1 September?

Piggywaspushed · 20/07/2024 15:07

That is correct!

This is one of the Dickens I haven't yet read so I'm in.

Terpsichore · 20/07/2024 20:44

Thanks for the thread, Piggy. I'll do my best to join in but I’ve got so much to read at the moment, I might fall by the wayside! I read MC many years ago and don’t remember much about it except a very large number of extremely silly names….

cassandre · 20/07/2024 21:32

Thank you Piggy, I'm in. The satire of America sounds interesting.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 22/07/2024 00:08

So looking forward to this!

AbsolutelyBarking · 23/07/2024 00:46

I have the audible version and am looking for a hardback copy.

Licoriceallsorts · 26/07/2024 17:06

I'm in and it's my first readalong. Excited!

Piggywaspushed · 30/08/2024 19:28

A reminder that we convene for the first time on SUNDAY!

I have one chapter to go.

I'm in too, belatedly! I wasn't able to finish the last book discussion, so have been looking forward to the new book.

I have a couple of chapters left.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 30/08/2024 20:28

Hi Piggy! Yes! Looking forward to our new readalong. I've read the instalment but will look over the chapters again before Sunday! It takes me a while to get into a new book.

Morning, just popping in to say I'll likely give this readalong a miss, I'm bogged down in other books plus I still want to finish a couple of Dickens which I haven't yet got through.

I've finished Nicholas Nickleby and it's probably been one of the more engaging and readable Dickens for me so far. The stressful time I went through at the start of the year interfered with my readalong but otherwise it's been an enjoyable one!

Happy reading and I may catch you up later if I make it through my TBR mountain.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 31/08/2024 08:54

See you soon @InTheCludgie
I'm glad you enjoyed NN. I miss Nicholas and Co.

Piggywaspushed · 31/08/2024 11:53

We shall miss you but totally understood!

I am ready on time for once - I am on holiday and didn’t want to take my big doorstep sized paperback with me so read this month’s instalment before I went. Hopefully I can remember my thoughts on it!

Piggywaspushed · 01/09/2024 08:08

Morning!

What does everyone think so far?

I am not really getting into it yet. I guess because Martin doesn't start as a child and isn't in at the very start, I am finding it hard to be interested in him. Starting with him as an entitled and rather self absorbed young man is an interesting choice. I am hoping he will develop a lot! At present we are getting way more Pecksniff and Pinch than Chuzzlewit.

This is very different from Oliver Twist, or David Copperfield where we root for them form the outset. I guess it's a similar concept to Nicholas Nickleby but he was so good compared to the awful people. We need to get MC a cardi and some gloves so he stops blocking the fire...

I did like the chapter where all the relatives gathered hopefully round the deathbed, squabbling, only to be given the slip by the indomitable Martin Sr. That was ultimate Dickens!

Good morning!

Phew. Not just me then. I can't say I'm loving it so far (or even liking it much).
I was wondering why that was the case and I think you have articulated it perfectly, Piggy. I'm also missing Nicholas a bit and Martin is no substitute unless he turns over a leaf to become less self-absorbed. He isn't very likeable right now, but I guess it's good to mix it up a bit, otherwise all the books could be the same!

I also liked the scene where the relatives gathered round waiting for news when old Martin absconded. It reminded me of a similar scene in Middlemarch when Peter Featherstone was on his deathbed and his greedy relatives were waiting downstairs only he didn't flee!

I'm half way through a reread so I'll be back later.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 01/09/2024 09:12

I like this Dickensian alphabet card!

Piggywaspushed · 01/09/2024 09:19

I like that!

They struggled with Q though. Does Queen Victoria actually ever get mentioned?

I'd go for Quarrelsome families.

OP posts:
FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 01/09/2024 09:20

Oh yes! That's a much better suggestion!

ChessieFL · 01/09/2024 11:42

We’re at that tricky stage where lots of people are being introduced and we don’t know which ones we’ll see again. I agree that so far Martin Chuzzlewit is rather unlikeable but I’m reserving judgment so far.

Like others I really enjoyed Chapter 4 with all the descriptions of the hideous family members, and again we get some great names - the Spottletoes, Chevy Slyme and Montague Tigg amongst them. And because I am very grown up I did snigger at Todger’s Guest House.

I am enjoying it so far although as I said there seem to be several plot strands developing and it’s not clear which ones will go anywhere. What are the Pecksniffs’ doing in London? Will we hear any more about Mark Talley now he’s gone to London? Why did Martin Chuzzlewit Senior do a midnight flit? Will Pinch get the lady he loves?

Piggywaspushed · 01/09/2024 12:04

I got through the recent Mark Tapley chapter without realising we had met him before...
