Don't post here if you don't want to know who dies and what happens.

You've been warned.

DH got ours from Asda too, they only had childrens cover, not the adult one. He said not an interesting queuing experience at all, altho' they brought sweeties - where did you q, expat? And how long did you have to wait? Agree about the godfathering, mi, could have been developed a bit more, especially as Sirius had been such an important figure for H and the baby was orphaned just as Harry had been... did still like the book tho'.

eca · 21/07/2007 21:12

ah, ok, I'm getting the eyes thing now.

expat - I thought the whole carrying the locket. it affecting people, burning Harry's skin etc was v v Lord of the Rings

motherinferior · 21/07/2007 21:15

I read it with a hangover, which was rather a nice way to read it.

expatinscotland · 21/07/2007 21:23

The ending was so 'The Return of the King' Sam and Pippin return to the Shire I started laughing.

It was just like it except Harry sailed off into banality rather than immortality.

I revised my original opinion and agree with MI, you can see the struggle to create Something Big, but that requires an originality that's absent to say the least.

I also thought the Snape-Lilly love subplot was weak.

rosmerta · 21/07/2007 21:25

I did enjoy it and thought it was as well written as the others, but did get the feeling that she was partly sad it was ending so as a result just wanted it over and done with

eca · 21/07/2007 21:26

lol at "Harry sailed off into banality"

rosmerta · 21/07/2007 21:27

Really? I thought the weakest bit was them jumping all over the countryside without being detected until Harry says V's name

rosmerta · 21/07/2007 21:27

But's that what he wanted wasn't it? A normal life?

rosmerta · 21/07/2007 21:28

Sorry, there was meant to be a at the end of that last comment so I didn't look like I was taking it too seriously

expatinscotland · 21/07/2007 21:30

Yes, he wanted a normal life. Just like Mel Gibson in 'Braveheart'. And millions of putridly sappy Yanks who buy her books in the same quantities they buy schmaltzy cards in yet another overt display of false sentiment.

Boak.

She had something going in those last three books before this one.

Had something.

Do you think he should've died then?

expatinscotland · 21/07/2007 21:32

I didn't create him or write him, rosmerta, so far be it from me to say definitely if he should have died. I mean, he had a near-death experience, after all.

But it just descended into 'Who Killed JR?!', IMHO and become one big, gooey marshmallow.

OP posts:
rosmerta · 21/07/2007 21:35

I can see that, but unfortunately, I'm a sucker for a happy ending so quite liked it (you can slap me now, if you wish)!

expatinscotland · 21/07/2007 21:37

She had this whole sort of Japanese thing going, where there's no way to destroy evil because it's part of nature the same way good is, and I thought she was going to go for the yin/yang, 'Princess Mononoke' balance zen thing.

But nah, she caved to the Hallmark crowd.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 21/07/2007 21:38

It's entirely possible to have a good ending that isn't a pile of sugary pink goo.

OP posts:
rosmerta · 21/07/2007 21:43

I will contemplate on that expat. In the meantime, I'm on the early shift tomorrow so am off to bed

ShrinkingVenomousTentacular · 21/07/2007 21:45

so which of the final chapters was the one she'd written years ago and locked up in her lawyers safe - the epilogue (which hardly seems worth it) or the previous one? Anyone know?
Also which chapter are the bookies paying out on the "last word" for?
Personally I didn't like it - I "needed" to read it to get to the end of the story, but it wasn't that good tbh. But I did appear twice, and didn't die

BadKreacher · 21/07/2007 21:54

Well - I ought to change my name I 'spose except then it would be a little bit of a spoiler on other threads.

quite glad I didn't turn out to be bad after all

serenity · 21/07/2007 22:13

I liked it

I'm having great fun now, refusing to answer Dhs questions on which theories were right and which were wrong

He's convinced that Dumbledore either didn't die or comes back. I won't confirm or deny his speculation

I'm very chuffed that I was right about Harry being a horcrux and about him having to sacrifice himself, although I didn't get mushy enough to think he'd survive dying I know feel smug enough to write my own 7 novel multimillion pound generating fantasy series

Oh, and as a bonus my DSs are hugely impressed by my ability to read the entire book in one day!

FlameDelacour · 21/07/2007 22:25

Right... done, and now to read the thread!

FlameDelacour · 21/07/2007 22:34

Read thread.

Anyone else really disappointed? Ron, Harry, Hermione, Neville and Ginny all ok?! Yeah, Fred went, but he one of 2 anyway

shinyhappytonks · 21/07/2007 22:58

I was surprised by how much i liked this book. I did find it wordy and overly twisty in places, but it had some really nice touches too, brought a smile to my face

I really enjoyed Macgonagalls(sp)'gallant' comment to Harry after dealing with Amycus. Loved the twins discussion of George being a 'saint because he is holey' and Neville's granny being 'proud' of her grandson, and Kreacher. This i found was more touching than some of the death scenes.

Anyway, 'twas good book and shall be reading it again when i have a 'few 7 hours spare....oh and a child watcher

FlameDelacour · 21/07/2007 22:59

Oh yes, the holes were good
