Don't post here if you don't want to know who dies and what happens.

You've been warned.

I don't think Draco would be with Pansy - I think he went for a nice quiet Ravenclaw of some sort in the end, repented for his bad ways (he wasn't exactly doing it with all his heart was he?), and just sort of tried to fade into the background.

Dumbledior · 24/07/2007 08:30

I KNEW Snape was a goodie!

Dumbledior · 24/07/2007 08:30

Oh, and Lupin's death got to me the most.

I really enjoyed the book - found it more "pacey" than the other books (where in the past i have had to almost force myself to read through the over-descriptive first few chapters!).

Went to see OOTP last night - couple of minor concerns. The Galleons were omitted from the film (for DA) - and yet they are important in Deathly Hallows. I guess when they come to make the film they'll miss that bit out again.

After the mentions of Aberforth and his goats in this or one of the other threads, i chuckled when they went into the Hogsmead for the first meeting of the DA and Aberforth and his goat were there. I was also trying to check that patronus' in the DA lessons were the same as in the Deathly Hallows (how sad am I?).

Finally - i thought it was one of the Pavrati twins who told on DA not Cho?

FlameDelacour · 24/07/2007 08:56

It was someone else completely who told on the DA - and she just told, not coerced with serum.

I thought the same about the galleons! Oh, and where I was doing the book after the film I was trying to remember the patronuses the other way round!!! I think they did match up didn't they?

mumbleboo · 24/07/2007 08:57

But it's a children's book (allegedly) and how much awfulness do they need? I couldn't read it if it didn't have the happy ending. So many kids love it so much i think it would really upset them to have their favourite characters killed off, a bit too brutal. Maybe she should do an adult version with more horrible bits and a different ending!

persephonesnape · 24/07/2007 09:22

talking of 'horrible bits'

* *

( sorry, only just realised i should do this. )

did anyone else get the impression that Ariana was sexually molested?

I know it's a children's book and people will take what they want from the way that rowling described how she wasn't the same after the muggles attacked her... but i do get a strong impression that it wasn't just beating her up a bit - that was why dumbeldores dad killed them and went to azkhabhan.

persephonesnape · 24/07/2007 09:23

sorry - molested wasn't the right word i think. 'attacked?'

rosmerta · 24/07/2007 09:29

I got that as well persephone, bit really

suezee · 24/07/2007 09:33

oh mu god that didnt even enter my head, but yeah god thats horrible.

With the whole thing of Greyback and Dumbledore's sister - children won't see it as we do. They will see a bad werewolf who likes to bite children (and that's all), and with the sister, they will just see any "bad things" that they are knowledgeable of.

I agree that most adults will see it as rape as that is the worst thing that we can think of for a child

fawkeoff · 24/07/2007 09:37

did anyone else wish that she'd have wrote a couple more chapters about the aftermath?????, i thought it was mean of her to skip right into 19 years later

TheArmadillo · 24/07/2007 09:38

That's a good point Flame.

By leaving it open as just something terrible, everyone comes to their own conclusions as to what that terrible thing would be. And for adults, I assume most would jump to sexual abuse.

IT's a clever way to do it - get the ideas across without frightening/disturbing the children.

CharleeWeasley · 24/07/2007 09:39

When reading the book Rape or sexual abuse didn't enter my head when reading about Ariana but now i think about it maybe it could have been, it just said that horrible things had happened to her it didn't say what so i suppose its for the reader to decide?

persephonesnape · 24/07/2007 09:40

agree flame. children (hopefully) won't have the sexual knowledge to connect arianas attack with rape. adults will think of that. and yes, greyback = blergh - although hermione is of age and i think he prefers his children more childish.

yuk though, but then it's an adults perspective.

rosmerta · 24/07/2007 09:50

agree re adult's perspective!

& yep, think there should've been a little bit more afterwards about the aftermath, the funerals etc, & also a few more pages in the epilogue!

CharleeWeasley · 24/07/2007 09:52

I think JKR purpousley didn't write about funerals ect as she wanted to focus on the great moment when V was totally destroyed, i think her mention of moving his body away from the others was enough tbh. but thats just personal opininon, i also like the fact that she put minimal detail into the end as it leaves each reader to imagine there own ending.

TheArmadillo · 24/07/2007 10:07

But if you want to let readers imagine their own ending (the 'after they ride off into the sunset' style thing) then why put in an epilogue at all? By putting one in you are deciding what happens. Therefore do it properly, or just leave it all to readers imaginations.

allmytimeonmumsnet · 24/07/2007 10:48

I think she would have struggled to provide an ending that everyone was happy with wouldn't she. I think she did pretty well myself. Yes there are things I think that are missing or glossed over, things I'd have liked to elaborate on more but if you read through the threads then everyone has different niggles. If she'd tackled everything then we would all still be reading....

I was disappointed with the epilogue but it must have been hard for her to know when to stop. Like has been said she could have written a whole other book. As it was she gave us a taster, got us all thinking. Her books are so rich with so much detail I think we expect it all to be spoon fed to us because we love JKR take on things. But as it is we can all speculate and come up with our own ideas and just imagine the things we can come up with. Thats far more fun.

Peronally I reckon that Victoire and Teddy have the first gay wedding. Molly Weasley will become the first married head of Hogworts and will then set up a creche to liberate all witches and wizards with childcare problems. Draco will marry a muggle - possibly one of Fergies daughters! Harry will become an Auror because there will still be bad wizards out there - V wasn't the only bad wiz he was just the worst. Kreacher will become head of the Dobby Memorial School for Ex-House Elves wanting to retrain with a new career. Ron will become a stay at home dad whilst Hermione pursues her career publishing a "modern history to Wizarding" and "Pioneering Witches of our time".

VoldemortrepentsandmarriesLuna · 24/07/2007 10:57

YOu know Victorie's a girl's name right?

And that Ted was a boy?

I like the rest of your ideas though

MrsRonWeasley · 24/07/2007 10:58

Really liked it - fave book out of the series, and Hermione gets her man! I reckon the epilogue was deliberately 'vague' as it (a) satisfies those people who need a happy ending and (b) paves the way for a What Harry Did Next book when she tries writing other things but no-one buys them because it just isn't the same

I also think it was a bit odd that Teddy was orphaned in a whole repeat of the HP theme....why???
