I have just finished The Handmaid's tale and was bkown away by the writing. Her style is beautiful.
I would like to read more by her, any other books I should try in particular?

SerfTerf · 19/07/2017 04:21

Ooh yes another vote for alias grace

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 19/07/2017 05:45

Both of the above plus:

Cats Eye
The Edible Woman
The Robber Bride
Wilderness Tips

But all her stuff is worth a read. It will take you a while though, she has been writing since the 1970s and is very prolific!

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 19/07/2017 17:59

The Blind Assassin brilliant. Alias Grace and Cat's Eye also terrific. Her latest The Heart Goes Last, not up to her usual standard.

Beachbaby2017 · 19/07/2017 18:21

I liked Alias Grace.

She writes poetry too, if you're interested :)

AaarghUsername · 19/07/2017 23:38

I'd put a nod in for the Oryx and Crake trilogy, as it is also dystopian and nods to some of the themes in The Handmaid's Tale, but with more "science" in the fiction.

I think they are different simply because technology had moved on from when she wrote The Handmaid's Tale, and her extrapolations of what could possibly happen next (again, she's pretty on the nose about some things), but I highly recommend them.

Also, a non-Atwood book - The Power by Naomi Alderman is pretty incredible. It deals with similar themes and is very thought-provoking.

MommaGee · 19/07/2017 23:40

Not long finished Oryx and Crane not relapsing till the ending it was a trilogy. Now I need to find the next two!!

ScarletSienna · 19/07/2017 23:41

The Blind Assassin. I read it because I'd run out of books on holiday and it was on a shelf at the hotel. Glad I found it as it was brilliant!

Waffles80 · 28/07/2017 21:23

I wish I was reading all of these Atwoods again for the first time!

Alderman's The Power is excellent.

TonicAndTonic · 28/07/2017 21:25

Another vote for Oryx and Crake, though I didn't find the other two books in the trilogy quite as good. Guess that's fairly common for trilogies though!

chickendrizzlecake · 28/07/2017 21:26

Going to recommend Lady Oracle - one of her earlier and lesser known ones, but still one of my favourite books ever.

mokaerisifhija · 28/07/2017 21:27

Another vote for Alias Grace.

EyeoftheStorm · 28/07/2017 21:30

Big vote for The Robber Brude.

There are a few writers who you know are going to hold you really tight from the moment you open their books. Margaret Atwood is one of those for me. Even while I'm reading, I don't want it to end because she writes so well.

EyeoftheStorm · 28/07/2017 21:30

Bride!!

pieceofpurplesky · 28/07/2017 21:35

Any - she is incredible

BaconAndAvocado · 28/07/2017 22:19

Cat's Eye is my favourite MA book after Handmaid's Tale.

A story about the subtleties of female bullying.

Wormulonian · 03/08/2017 09:47

Alias Grace is very well written. I love the MaddAdam trilogy especially the second book The Year of the Flood. I really enjoyed The Heart Goes Last a more recent book - set in a near future, very wry humour - so a bit lighter than THMT

Moogletea · 03/08/2017 09:55

I love alias grace, edible woman and the heart goes last

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/08/2017 10:02

I remember liking Bluebeard's Egg which is a short story collection.

blueskyinmarch · 03/08/2017 10:03

I have just finished Alias Grace which i really enjoyed. I plan on reading the Blind Assassin next.

Elliepurpleflower · 03/08/2017 22:49

Vote here for 'Lady oracle'. I loved that book!

CoolCarrie · 04/08/2017 13:20

I just finished reading her collection of short stories, The Stone Mattress, which was excellent.

lemonpoppyseed · 04/08/2017 13:32

Alias Grace is one of my favourite books of all time. I also really liked The Robber Bride.
