I have just finished The Handmaid's tale and was bkown away by the writing. Her style is beautiful.
I would like to read more by her, any other books I should try in particular?

Also was going to recommend short story The Stone Mattress.

Find it for free (legal!) here:

Thanks for the link Gin I enjoyed reading that story on my break this afternoon with some good chocolate and coffee Smile

GinAndToast · 04/08/2017 19:19

Worm

Ditto for me the other day. I actually came across it from this list.

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/m.mic.com/articles/amp/94552/13-short-stories-from-classic-novelists-you-can-read-over-lunch

Hope the link works. I am motoring through them on my lunch break or when I am supposed to be working

Wormulonian · 04/08/2017 20:04

Really good link - Thanks Gin I have it bookmarked - lots to enjoy!

TooMinty · 04/08/2017 20:34

All of them, read all of them - I ❤️Margaret Atwood....

How sci-fi do you like to go? I really enjoyed the Oryx and Crake series.

wherethewildthingis · 04/08/2017 20:36

I love the Blind Assassin so much, it really is my all time favourite book

AnyFucker · 04/08/2017 20:37

Thank you for that link x

Seachangeshell · 04/08/2017 20:38

Just read all of them! I nearly have now.

midsomermurderess · 05/08/2017 22:22

I agree with the Blind Assasin, I loved it. In fact I might just look it out.

TriskelArts · 05/08/2017 23:29

Another vote for The Robber Bride.

Wildernesstips · 08/08/2017 19:46

I love Margaret Atwood (can you tell)? If you liked Handmaids Tale, think you will love Oryx and Crake.

May actually have to start re-reading them all.

clairethewitch70 · 09/08/2017 12:17

Does anyone know of any similar books to The Handmaids Tale by other authors?

rizlett · 09/08/2017 12:21

The Heart Goes Last is very good too. Worthy of a second and third read.

AuldHeathen · 09/08/2017 12:49

A nice short one! Surfacing

Wondermoomin · 09/08/2017 20:44

Checking in on this thread too as I have also just finished The Handmaid's Tale (my first Atwood) and wow. Loved it. I don't like sci fi generally (because completely unbelievable stories hold no interest for me) but this sort of dystopian near-future novel does appeal.

Currently reading something else but will definitely call on Margaret Atwood again, referring to this thread as a starting point.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/08/2017 20:48

Alias Grace.

theredjellybean · 12/08/2017 21:15

Another vote for madadam trilogy... Liked year of the flood better than oryx and Crake

I like dystopia future fiction... Try the well, the ship and the power... All good reads.
Particularly the ship... Very Margaret atwood esque

Wormulonian · 13/08/2017 08:10

If you like Alias Grace and the concept of an unreliable narrator (and you run out of Margaret Atwood's) then I think Jane Harris's Gillespie and I is
a good read.

Theredjellybean I agree - the Year of the Flood is the standout book in the Maddadam triology. I nearly didn't read it because I wasn't that keen on Oryx and Crake but boy was I glad I did - fantastic

IHeartKingThistle · 13/08/2017 08:15

I credit The Edible Woman with making me a feminist at age 14!

Wormulonian · 13/08/2017 08:20

Has anyone read Life before man? I remember reading The Edible Woman when I was about 17/18 at the end of the 70's and loving it. I then bought Life before Man which I could ill afford (books seemed a lot more expensive back int he day) and I just couldn't get on with it and kind of avoided MA books until a uni friend made me read THMT when it came out.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 21/09/2017 08:09

I love her ! My Mum got me The Robber bride years and years ago and I still re read it . I like reading books as I grow up as you see them differently

I also liked The Year of the Flood best of the trilogy mainly because the character was my cup of tea (Toby) but the whole series is amazing I love her imagination

I need to re find my copies of alias grace

Her earlier ones are good but not quite as epic and thought provokingas her later ones

hackmum · 21/09/2017 13:23

Alias Grace is fantastic. But she rarely disappoints.

woollychimp · 21/09/2017 20:42

I've just reread The Handmaids Tale, having watched the tv series. I'd forgotten how good it was.

I've read nearly all the above mentioned books - the only one i didn't get on wit was The Year of The Flood - perhaps i should give it another go.

IonaMumsnet · 21/09/2017 21:56

I'm just starting Hag-Seed, which is a retelling of The Tempest. Review here. It looks great but different to her other stuff. It's part of that Shakespeare 'thing' by several well-known authors mentioned in the above Guardian feature. Jeanette Winterson did one on The Winter's Tale, also Anne Tyler and Tracy Chevalier have contributed. Looks like a rich seam of decent books to delve into, whether or not you're interested in the Shakespeare link. Must read The Handmaid's Tale again, too, though. It's been years. On a (slightly) related note, has anyone else read The Power, and what did you think?
