Now I know, why it was only £3 - one of those books where nothing would happen like that.

Yes that's a good point.
crazy lady had hurt her own son hadn't she? But yes I found that a bit shoxking

DrSeussRevived · 07/02/2016 08:41

Did she hurt George? She kept him locked in for a bit but don't think she hit him or anything.

StealthPolarBear · 07/02/2016 08:48

His entire childhood was dysfunctional and he was effectively a prisoner, that's what I mean sorry

mollyonthemove · 07/02/2016 08:49

Ooh I am half way through disclaimer and not entirely sure..... Sophie Hannah has got steadily worse I agree. I still have The Carrier on Kindle and keep trying to brace myself to read it!

Have to say i do like the Nicci French Frieda Klein series though. And other good series is by M R Arlidge.

mollyonthemove · 07/02/2016 08:52

A game for all the family (just noticed I have to comment!) was OK. Typical convoluted plot which seems great at the beginning. The whole weird house seeing bit looks as though it was going to be much more exciting than it was.

DrSeussRevived · 07/02/2016 08:53

Oh psychologically hurt, absolutely!

SouthWestmom · 07/02/2016 12:36

Oh yes, by the end I don't think I even registered that she hadn't hurt anyone!

It would have made a lot more sense if the son, the husband or even the silent daughter had killed crazy mum. They all suffered for years and also it'd tie in better with the "story" of murders and murder threats "in the family"

DrSeussRevived · 07/02/2016 22:17

The Carrier is not good.

And why doesn't Charlie LTB already? Simon treats her like crap and she's scared to say anything.

Hygge · 07/02/2016 23:21

The Carrier is one of the worst ones. Along with Lasting Damage, it has to be joint worst for nonsensical explanations and convoluted crap.

DrSeussRevived · 07/02/2016 23:34

Yy. Why does the OW in Lasting Damage put up with the main guy messing her about so long?

Amazing numbers of people in The later books willing to collude in serious crime at the drop of a hat.

Her ghost stories seem less far fetched!

DrSeussRevived · 07/02/2016 23:48

Agree with others that I like her writing but not her plots. Could she write someone else's plot?!?

I will get the Alex marwood, didn't know there was a new one out.

SouthWestmom · 08/02/2016 05:38

I was wondering that, someone else edits out the weird nonsensical bits maybe?

OP posts:
Niceteeth · 08/02/2016 05:53

Just read 'A room swept white'. Makes no sense at all. I had promised myself not to read anymore of her books, but the blurbs are so exciting! I can't stand Charlie and Simon's relationship, and all the characters are so unpleasant and irrational.

Hygge · 08/02/2016 08:19

I do quite often read a book and wonder what it might have been like if another author had written it instead, or if they both had a go so we could compare them.

There are people who could make Sophie Hannah's books good if they wrote them instead of her. For example if Nicci French re-wrote Sophie Hannah's books for her, they'd probably be alright.

DrSeussRevived · 10/02/2016 19:17

Just finished the Darkest Secret by Alex marwood. Much better!

mollyonthemove · 11/02/2016 14:12

Dammit, she's got a new one out and I just know I'm going to get it Sad

mollyonthemove · 11/02/2016 14:12

Although - a shorter one called 'The Orphan Choir' is pretty good!

SouthWestmom · 11/02/2016 18:29

Molly, be strong!

The Orphan Choir was odd

OP posts:
Hygge · 11/02/2016 18:39

The Orphan Choir was bad.

It could have been good but she went and ruined it with her wonky motives again.

Resist the new one. You can do it! Grin

One day she'll write a book about how people are sucked in by subliminal plot trickery and we'll know how she's forcing us to ignore what we know (that we hate her books) and makes us buy them anyway (because she Jedi mind tricks us into forgetting they are rubbish).

Niceteeth · 11/02/2016 18:42

Don't do it! Although I'm worried I will again. Dh is getting sick of me complaining about her. My MIL introduced me to her books but we're now united in despair!

mollyonthemove · 11/02/2016 18:58

I may borrow it from the library.....

mollyonthemove · 11/02/2016 19:00

I probably only like the orphan choir because I live in Cambridge too! In fact she doesn't live too far from me. Her poems are good though. Went to see her about 20 years ago and she was very funny.

saltedcaramelhotchoc · 11/02/2016 21:06

Alex Marwood The Darkest Secret is good. Just downloaded Behind Closed Doors by B A Paris for 99p - looks worth a try; has anyone read it?

SouthWestmom · 11/02/2016 22:53

HyggeGrin

I looked at behind closed doors; about a relationship?

I've just remembered a brilliant book I read , sort of a thriller type but no gore. About a couple who bought a posh house for some bargain price and then the wife becomes obsessed with the previous couple.
