Now I know, why it was only £3 - one of those books where nothing would happen like that.

Yes,that is a bit odd.

saltedcaramelhotchoc · 22/01/2016 22:19

Oh I just downloaded the Good Neighbour - is it not worth reading? Sigh.
Read Alex Marwood, the Darkest Secret - it's gripping. Has anyone read Beside Myself? I've also downloaded that...

SouthWestmom · 22/01/2016 22:22

There was no suspense or tension, just a tired plot and a really obvious baddie. I'm getting fed up with stereotypes.

I will try Alex marwood, sounds good.

I've read the Good Neighbor now. Meh. Baddie was screamingly obvious. Characters lacked depth. Meh, I agree.

SouthWestmom · 24/01/2016 16:49

This is hilarious. Like the grumpy hard to please book club.

What is need is a list of books that please the GHTPBC.

SouthWestmom · 29/01/2016 22:24

Yes! An agreed list of acceptable efforts.
Can't actually think of any at the moment although I did quite like 'before I slepp'

StealthPolarBear · 29/01/2016 23:28

Ok ill be predictable and add tana french in the woods.erm...struggling to think of others. Disclaimer is ok but not a page Turner and I get irritated by high levels of angst on each page. I do like a bit of escapism!
Agatha Christie.
Sherlock Holmes
I'm sure there are loads more, some were even written this century.

StealthPolarBear · 29/01/2016 23:29

I actually can't remember the last book I got to the end of having enjoyed it and not thought it was trash :( I can cope with a fair amount if trash but it does need some proper entertainment in there.

StealthPolarBear · 29/01/2016 23:32

Ooh I very much appreciated (can't say enjoyed) still Alice. My grandma had dementia and I thought it was so cleverly written. Heart breaking though.

SouthWestmom · 30/01/2016 13:58

I'm going to check my kindle and report back.....

Can I join in? I've read Game For All The Family and Disclaimer recently. I quite liked Disclaimer in that it tied up all its loose ends and made sense within its own universe. However, that universe depended on nobody ever saying to anyone else "Do you remember ...."

I've just finished Elizabeth Is Missing by Emma Healey. Very cleverly written from the point of view of a woman with dementia - some similarities to
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night. Try that one!

Am now on another debut police procedural, In Bitter Chill by Sarah Ward. Quite promising so far. I will report back as to its suitability for the GHTPBC.

StealthPolarBear · 31/01/2016 21:04

Yes but what did you think of game for all the family?

I'm halfway through diclaimer. It is dry and dull. I don't really care about any of the characters and am having to force myself to read it.

SouthWestmom · 31/01/2016 22:18

Hi Kent, yes you can join if you have a comment on A Game for all the Family Wink
I'm going to have to try Disclaimer aren't I?
Has anyone read Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn? I'm saying nothing......

StealthPolarBear · 01/02/2016 08:33

I have bit I can't remember the detail

SouthWestmom · 01/02/2016 08:47

Her family were killed and there's some weird club that invite her along.

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 04/02/2016 21:06

I think disclaimer ended well ,especially the decision she made. I was thinking exactly that and would have been cross if it had had the expected ending.
I enjoyed the last third more than the rest!

DrSeussRevived · 06/02/2016 23:14

I don't understand why they couldn't go to a hotel instead of to dog woman. I know they were tight for cash but surely a random guest house somewhere would be more logical...

SouthWestmom · 06/02/2016 23:34

They needed to lure mad professor to the house.

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 07/02/2016 07:50

Yes there was some weird link to dogs I think

DrSeussRevived · 07/02/2016 07:54

But why did they have to stay there? Main character Justine(?) could've just popped round to meet crazy lady and dog lady for a spot of lying and murdering...

DrSeussRevived · 07/02/2016 07:57

And since crazy lady was utterly mad and hadn't actually physically hurt anyone, it's a bit much she ended up dead without any come back on Justine...
