Now I know, why it was only £3 - one of those books where nothing would happen like that.

I think the earlier ones were good because they were less convoluted.
Like I said it's like someone's read an Agatha Christie to ten pages before the end , those pages are missing so they write the ending, doing anything they can to make it all fit togethet

SouthWestmom · 16/01/2016 23:05

Yes police ones have the snowman and Simon.
Brian - you're right about the dog house connection. Apart from the names fitting together, there wasn't a link at all. So the funny feeling was just woo.
And the stories were both similar attempts at teenage writing. But I agree, not great.

I actually made a new list on my iPhone of authors I don't like specifically to put Sophie on it, i ended up buying a third book of hers and only a few pages in remembering how crap she was, I'd given up on the previous two. So now I know never to buy any of her books again!

So far I've only got Sophie Hannah and Cathy Kelly on the don't like list Smile

SouthWestmom · 17/01/2016 00:39

Oh I have loads, I will add Sophie today. I was just looking at all my kindle books on the cloud and thinking how brilliant some of them were.

Never buy:
Lisa Jewell
Jojo Moyes
Cecelia Aherne
Judy Astley - loved the old stuff
Tricia Daly
Any self published kindle book
Nick Hornby - loved the old stuff

" Any self published kindle book"
When I first got my ipad I naively thought that all the books I could search for were proper books, well it never occurred to me they wouldn't be. All of a sudden I was getting thousands of them that looked like the sort of thing I'd like but so cheap, by authors id never come across. I ploughed my way through a few, wondering how they could be so bad and also so full of grammatical errors. It ttok me a little while to work it out!

saltedcaramelhotchoc · 17/01/2016 09:06

There is a newer Sophie Hannah coming out next month. Blurb looks great, but it will disappoint.

I liked Alex Marwoods The Darkest Secret that came out recently. Clever but not tortuous plot.

SouthWestmom · 17/01/2016 09:25

Stealth, I know. That was exactly my experience too and I know lots of people on here recommend and even write them, but i have never read a decent one.

The blurb looked good on this one too! I wondered she's on a x number of books deal and is just churning them out....

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 17/01/2016 12:29

Yes she does seem to be churning them out. Shame as I think she's got some talent.
I love tana french but she only publishes a book every couple of years. Nice in a way as I uy them in hb and take time off (send dh away with kids) to really enjoy it. But I feel bereft in between and it's a long time! Her descriptions are brilliant, and as far as I can tell, cliché free!

SouthWestmom · 17/01/2016 12:54

Oh I might try her then.
I love lucretia grindle but she's only written about six books.

cankleofglitter · 17/01/2016 18:07

I have just finished this book. Dire! How did it ever get published? There are more gaps in the plot than any book I've read. The biggest one being why would the dog woman help bury a body fir someone she's known for a few minutes. The while thing was just bizarre!

StealthPolarBear · 17/01/2016 18:15

Ok I'm going to read it now despite having another on the go so I can join in the ranting

SouthWestmom · 17/01/2016 18:20

Glitter, don't spoil the plot for stealth! Grin

Stealth, see you on the other side

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 17/01/2016 18:24

Ok chapter one over and it seems like drivel already.
is she out of ideas? As I said I think she's talented but it seems like she's constantly trying to out weird her previous books

StealthPolarBear · 17/01/2016 18:24

I really don't think it will matter :)

saltedcaramelhotchoc · 17/01/2016 18:32

The plot really is beyond silly and it gets worse. Annoying as I liked her style a lot initially.
I really do think that she needs a strict editor.

StealthPolarBear · 17/01/2016 18:37

I've just read a chapter of the script stuff (teenage writing j assume). I gather from this thread there's quite a bit if it. That's going to be hard going.

SouthWestmom · 17/01/2016 18:52

Yeah there's like a story within a story - bonus!

OP posts:
SouthWestmom · 17/01/2016 18:54

Actually much as I hate bloggers I've been considering (about ten minutes ago) setting up a book review blog for my own pleasure. Lots of reviews online are from shops so have an interest in being good although I quite like good reads.

OP posts:
BrianButterfield · 17/01/2016 18:54

It is hard going, and turns out important to the plot, which made it all the more tedious for me at the end because I just had not paid attention to any of it (HATE stupid names in books).

StealthPolarBear · 17/01/2016 18:57

I often think it would be useful to have a character list at the front of all books. There's nothing worse than finding out whodunit and realising you haven't got a clue who they are or where they've cropped up before.
Thanks for the warning. I'll pay attention to the stupid names. I suppose there's a family tree to help

The monogram murders
I read half way and then gave up.

The family tree is annoying though. I was like 'that's wrong' and then halfway through one of the xters says 'why is X not Y' and stupid Justine is all ohhhh wow I never saw that. All of it annoys me.

StealthPolarBear · 17/01/2016 19:13

That wasn't her, wasn't that nikki french

SouthWestmom · 17/01/2016 19:27

just checked my kindle in the collection named 'books I started but were crap' and its by Sophie Hannah. Did nikki French do one too?

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 17/01/2016 19:28

Really? I'll check mine. Could have sworn it was nikki french but am probably wrong
