Was reading the Wolf Hall thread and got me thinking about what was the first fictional character you got a crush on ?

Weirdly I think mine was Henry V from Shakespeare :-/ followed by Mr Thornton from North and South ( just discovered the tv version!)

What were yours?

Ah you see if he'd looked like that I might have thought differently, this is the cover of my <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?num=10&um=1&hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&biw=1252&bih=560&tbm=isch&tbnid=SdWV56EgBAJ4EM:&imgrefurl=www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/books/howl/&docid=r_-VsUsfzbG94M&imgurl=www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/books/howl/howls_uk_paper_sm.jpg&w=150&h=228&ei=yxDbT-6wDbGa0QXFg8nzDA&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=567&sig=116454497248816341786&sqi=2&page=1&tbnh=118&tbnw=78&start=0&ndsp=28&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:0,i:85&tx=28&ty=47" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Howl's Moving Castle book. Can you see what I mean?

Aftereightsaremine · 15/06/2012 11:53

Oh yes to John of Gaunt & Colin Firth as Mr Darcy. Didn't like Abdullah in Lace, didn't he rape one of the women? trying to remember my first crush & I think it was secret seven character whose name escapes me.

PostBellumBugsy · 15/06/2012 11:56

OMG, how could I have forgotten: Mark in Flambards!

NoraHelmer · 15/06/2012 12:54

Oh yes, I'd forgotten Mark in Flambards :)

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 15/06/2012 14:02

Oh yes Magneto :o

Urgh NOT Colin Firth as Mr Darcy. He is NOT Mr Darcy. Mr Darcy is taciturn and funny and dry and observant and sarcastic and I love him - not a grumpy old oaf in waiting who looks like he's ready to grow jowls and has a poker up his bum.

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 15/06/2012 14:48

Odysseus, the greatest hero of them all.

From the book of the same name by Tony Robinson and the children's TV series he made where he part read and part acted out the story. They should repeat that, it was a great series.

I was fickle though, I would have abandoned Odysseus for Diomedes in a heartbeat because he was very handsome in the illustrations.

FayKnights · 15/06/2012 14:52

Rupert C-B or Declan O'Hara.

AndWhenYouGetThere · 15/06/2012 15:55

Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables, Julian from Enid Blyton, and one that hasn't yet been mentioned (and therefore feels like I'm revealing a dirty secret) Aladdin.

DumSpiroSpero · 15/06/2012 16:07

The first I remember was Mr Rochester - but I probably fancied one of the Famous Five at some point before that.

Currently I do rather like Lord Jasper Damerel from Venetia, or for a 'bit of rough' Uhtred from Bernard Cornwell's Alfred the Great series Grin.

The sensible boy who was in charge of the gardening in 'The Naughtiest Girl' books.

He seemed very capable.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 15/06/2012 18:21

Oh yes. Gilbert. And then (in roughly chronological order) Mark from Flambards, Jay Gatsby, Captain Dobbin in Vanity Fair, Mr Rochester and Mr Thornton. But before them all came Captain Scarlet.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 15/06/2012 18:22

Oh and Tristan in All Creatures Great And Small.

GlassofRose · 15/06/2012 18:32

The Goblin King - Labyrinth (It was played by David Bowie)

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 15/06/2012 18:36

Gilbert Blythe
Julian from Famous Five
Laurie from Little Women
John from Swallows and Amazons Blush
The brother from Flowers in the Attic

Yes and then the various Austen heroes, Mr Rochester, RCB.

I remember reading Riders at someone else's house when I was babysitting when I was about 17. My Mum had never let me have anything like that in the house, and I got totally hot under the collar and could barely look the parents in the eye when they came home Grin

BellaBearisWideAwake · 15/06/2012 19:12

I suddenly feel a judy Blume readathon coming on ... Wonder if they are on kindle?

BellaBearisWideAwake · 15/06/2012 19:12

FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC!!!!! wow, blast from the past or what.

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 15/06/2012 19:26

Aliba,I used to have a sneaky look at any Mills and Boon lying around - I usually went to the end for kissing scenes still do Blush

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 15/06/2012 19:50

Oh yum Tristan from Herriot books. And goblin king Bowie at an embarrassingly young age. :o

BestIsWest · 15/06/2012 20:46

Oh yes! Tristan Farnon - I adored him.

Matt the Irish journalist in Imogen.

Laurie from Little women.

jeee · 15/06/2012 20:53

Another vote for Pennington - the original bad boy. Sensitive, moody.... and exactly the sort of boy you don't want your daughter to bring home.

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 15/06/2012 21:13

Pennington, Will, Mark and Dick in Flambards

Peter Marlow and Patrick from the Antonia Forest stories

Jonathan, from K M Peyton's Prove Yourself a Hero (and a few other books I can't remember the title of)

Ken from the Jinty and Shantih books

MissM · 15/06/2012 21:13

Heathcliff will be in my heart forever.

But other serious crushes were:

  • Almanzo Wilder from the Little House books (although Cap Garland was more my type as I got older)
  • Will and Dick from Flambards (I was at one with Christina in her grief)
  • Dallas Winston
  • Strider (phwoooarrr)
  • Will Ladislaw in Middlemarch during my A levels
  • tragically I had the hots for James rather than Tristan in All Creatures.
ponchopink · 15/06/2012 21:23

Oh yes Laurie from little women moving on later to the lovely lovely jilly cooper sex god Rupert CB. Did I lust more over him or the comforting messy heroines , houses gorgeous food , sigh I could go on and on and on

Onlyaphase · 15/06/2012 21:25

Oh this thread is bringing back some old memories!

Gilbert Blythe, clearly.
Mark and Will from Flambards, and then Jonathan Meredith. And Pennington. Imagine my excitement when I found out recently there was a 4th Pennington book, and a final fourth (?) book featuring Jonathan Meredith. Just like being 15 years old again.

I liked some of the boys from the Monica Edward's books too I think - Dion from Punchbowl Farm and then Dan from Under the Rose - all dark and brooding and sad about his lost twin.
