Fortyplus

For lunch today I have had a salmon salad with rocket and tomatoes with chillies , one apple, one banana and a portion of pineapple.

I have just borrowed some Rennies from colleagues becuase I feel bloated and uncomfortable. Obviously they are fermenting and I need to find something to replace at least one portion of fruit.

Please don't say rice cakes - I hate those!

I shall have a think

PhoenixFlower - roll on Thursday!

fortyplus · 11/05/2010 15:34

I'd rather eat cardboard than rice cakes!

Avoid 'gimmicks'. You have to develop a new repertoire of foods that you enjoy every day. Wholemeal bread sandwiches maybe? Then 4 or 5 pieces of fruit plus carrots so you can snack throughout the day. And don't feel guilty if you have an occasional bar of chocolate - it's what normal people do!

fortyplus · 11/05/2010 16:17

Oh... and I can't tell you how great it feels the first time (in years anyway) you buy size 12 trousers!

Avad · 11/05/2010 16:24

I've never bought size 12 anything I seemed to go from kids sizes straight into a size 16

fortyplus · 12/05/2010 00:15

I do think sizes have got larger recently. I was size 12 when I was about 21 - but I was only a little over 10 stone then (and I'm 5' 9".

I ended up a size 18 and some of those were pretty tight!

It doesn't matter where you start - if you're only consuming enough calories for a body of the weight you want to be then that's where you'll end up. And in the meantime you have the advantage that the weight will go faster because a bigger body uses more calories.

Don't diet! And good luck!

Niecie · 12/05/2010 00:51

Is it too late for me to join in too? I saw your thread title and thought that I would be at home here, not surrounded by people fretting about losing 1/2 stone for their holidays - not that isn't a big deal but 7 stone is a completely different problem.

I had 7st to lose but have lost 17lbs since Feb half term so feeling pretty chuffed. First time I have ever lost weight on purpose!

Nobody in RL knows about the weight loss except an old school friend and I only talk to her on-line so it would be great to have others in the same boat to bore chat to about the highs and lows.

Anybody got any plans for rewards as they lose weight? I am off to buy a pair of 'I've lost a stone, whoopee' shoes which I have been promising myself for a couple of weeks (I do need shoes though). Trying to think of something nice for lost stone no. 2 - don't need clothes. I still have loads I bought when I was in denial about getting bigger that have hardly been worn. A little incentive would be great.

phoenixflower · 12/05/2010 07:56

No never too late Niecie - welcome!

Niecie - Welldone on loosing 17lbs, that's fantastic!! You def do deserve your new shoes

Message to everyone:

I was thinking, it would probably be a good idea to measure your hips, waist, chest, upper arm/thigh and anything else you want to measure and record it somewhere at home. Am not suggesting anyone should have to post their measurements here as I realise they are very personal to each of us.

But I thought we could post our change in measurements e.g. "I lost 2 inches off my waist this week etc".

BigBadMummy · 12/05/2010 08:03

Um... might I join in please?

I have about five stone to lose and I have been kidding myself that it is okay to be this size.

But it isnt.

My bras hurt and I avoid looking in mirrors because I am ashamed of what I see.

I have a pot of calomine tea on the go if anybody would like some?

BigBadMummy · 12/05/2010 08:06

calomine?!! I have got chicken pox?

Camomile.

Lordy.

phoenixflower · 12/05/2010 08:12

BigBadMummy - Welcome! Always nice to have new people join. Feel free to pour the tea, I am not on the school run this morning as DH is off work and has offered to do it.Although, he's not doing too well tbh and I may be stepping in!

Lotkinsgonecurly · 12/05/2010 08:12

Is it too late for me to join? I've got around 6 or 7 stone to lose.

I'm just generally following a low fat / low calorie diet to try and break my habits of overeating.

I really could have written some of your posts, that is me!

Was always on the largeish side as a kid / teenager and have been large ever since now larger than ever..

Will let you know how I get on.

phoenixflower · 12/05/2010 08:17

Never too late Lotkinsgonecurly! Welcome!

BigBadMummy · 12/05/2010 08:21

Phoenix, thank you. DH is doing mine too so that I can Mumsnet try and catch up with work.

I am finding that working from home is really contributing to making my weight problem worse. It means I can eat all day every day if I want to.

I just don't seem to have the willpower to stop it.

And have the mindset that says "I am this size now one more biscuit wont hurt".

phoenixflower · 12/05/2010 08:33

BigBadMummy - I am very similar. Home all day and eat what I want and when I want it!!

Maybe when we want to snack we should come and post on MN about what we want to eat and why - may just enough to make us stop and think and maybe not eat it!

OP posts:
BigBadMummy · 12/05/2010 08:38

That sounds like a plan. Though I think it might mean I am here all day!!

I guess also we need to remember that it has taken me 25 years (I was okay until I was 15, though I have always been on the large side) to get to this size, I can't expect it all to come off in a week.

Positive thoughts today I think!!

pedrothellama · 12/05/2010 09:06

BigBadMummy

That has been the main reason my weight has really got to me - none of my bras are comfortable - they dig in under my boobs and round my back.

DP has noticed that my size has gone from a 36 to a 38 and now that is tight, I cannot bear going to a 40 - I am very short and even a small increase in weight shows instantly.

My boobs are way to big to go bra-less, so I either go up a size or get down two sizes.

I know which way I want to go

Niecie · 12/05/2010 10:48

Thanks for the welcome and for the opportunity to talk to people who understand!

I also agree about the bra thing. Losing 17lbs doesn't show much when you are 7 stone overweight but I have noticed small changes and one of them is that I can do up my bra to the second set of hooks rather than straining on the first set. Before they were cutting in and uncomfortable, even the properly fitted ones. I also didn't want to go up to 40 inch - that just seemed a step too far.

I also find that I don't get breathless doing my shoes up because my enormous stomach isn't crushing my chest when I bend forward. It is still pretty big (although being pear shaped my arse is way bigger) but even a few pounds have made a difference.

I need a thread like this because now those two physical constraints have been eased it would be too easy to forget about the other 6 stone and give up on trying to lose weight. I have been overweight a while but even so,it is still a shock every time I am out shopping for clothes to see this massive person looking back at me in the mirror. It is sooooo easy to forget about it when not confronted by the possibility of size 22 clothes as the only option or not being able to shop in some places at all!

So, if I can do it, believe me, you can all do it too. I am the worst person in the world for procrastinating and putting off the inevitable.

Niecie · 12/05/2010 10:54

Oh and the other thing has anybody else used www.foodfocus.co.uk? It is a free website for monitoring calories and weight loss and it calculates how long it will take to reach target weight and what your BMI is and all that sort of stuff. Useful.

I shall also do as Phoenixflower suggested and measure all the wobbly bits. It will make uncomfortable reading! I particularly dislike my flabby arms. Why do some larger people still manage to keep relatively slim arms but I look like i have shoulder to elbow arm bands on?

phoenixflower · 12/05/2010 12:40

Yeah, I am the same. From my elbow down, my arms are slim and from my knees down, my legs are slim. DH trys to make me better by saying "if someone saw you from the knees down, they'd never know you were fat!" usually puts a smile on my face . I always wear leggings and open toe shoes like birkies to show off my legs as hoepfully draws attention away from my stomach area!

OP posts:
pedrothellama · 12/05/2010 12:43

Hi Neicie

Tell me about arms. It is not enough exercise to tone them but once a week I take DP's squash racket and beat the hell out of the rugs by draping them over on the washing line.

Housework the old fashioned way, it is very carthatic to watch the dust fly and seems to take ages to get it all out.

Great if you are in a bad mood, want to punch someone and DP's squash racket actually gets used once a week

Strangely this is one household chore my friend's Ds's are quite happy to do, they take it very seriously

pedrothellama · 12/05/2010 13:57

Phoenixflower

What time is your meeting tomorrow? Will you report back as soon as you can afterwards?

No pressure

phoenixflower · 12/05/2010 14:17

pedrothellama - It's 1 - 2.30pm. Got to sign up tomorrow and get all the books etc they give you when you join. Yep I will report back after the school run though I doubt there will be much to report back on apart from me realising just how heavy i've got!!

But am hoping that in my first week, I can loose 7lbs

Niecie · 12/05/2010 18:11

Hitting things sounds like fun.

A couple of times I have played the Wii Fit boxing thing and I can imagine that might have an effect, eventually. I am surprised you haven't all felt the sizemic shifts in the earth's crust as my bat wings swing around though. My mum suffers from the same problem and having just lost about 4stone with WW she asked the doctor about shifting the bat wings but he said they were genetic. Bummer, what with those, child bearing hips and bunions it seems Mother Nature loves a laugh!

Good luck tomorrow Phoenixflower. This time next week you could be 1/2 stone lighter Whoo hoo!

lizziemun · 12/05/2010 19:07

Sorry been very busy this weekend.

I can't remember who asked but I'm going to try this heathy eating and exercise programme.

I have about a lot to lose I am 5ft 1in and 13.6 stone doctor said I need to be around 8st.
