Hi, I have started the Dukan Diet. Managed to get thru day 1. Anyone else trying it? What do you think ?

OP posts:
dott · 08/09/2010 13:57

Well done saltcod.
I am managing so far to have a good day. I have days when I feel full of vigour and other days when I feel awful.

moonshine · 08/09/2010 17:24

Katisha - I believe there's an alternative day diet which advocates something like a max of 500 cals one day alternating with eating what you like (within reason!) in order to trick your body - 2 weeks is quite a long stall and I feel for you.

Bloomin' 'eck insertexpletive - well done. Must admit though and putting my fingers in my ears about the next stage, should I ever get there - feels a long way off atm.

And thanks to those who answered my question Smile. I'm not seeing much loosening, except for my fingers (rings are falling off!) and trousers being very slighter looser on the waist. Canot wait for my 'bra hamster rolls' to go...

Yes I am pretty thirsty in the mornings but I do have a drink always in the middle of the night after my inevitable trip to the loo.

No swoosh and had a demon in my head this morning wondering my I don't just do a low-cal diet instead as it would be probably get the same results. But I have talked myself into carrying for a day or so yet....

insertexpletive · 08/09/2010 18:03

Thanks everyone - I really do feel like I am happy with the way I look (within reason and with clothes on - I have had 2 dc after all Wink)

I am now a size 12/14 and was a tight 18 before starting Dukan. It had been a slow weight gain, having never lost all my 'baby weight' after dd and getting pregnant again within 12 months with ds.

I was tempted to try and keep at it to get down to a size 10/12 but to be honest, at 5' 10", I have never been that slim and Dukan says I am now under my ideal weight, so happy with that. It has been amusing being back on the school run - lots of requests for my 'secret' and positive coments on my figure Grin

Dott Top tips, for what it's worth...
Drink loads
Eat really regularly, I am much more likely to cheat if I skip a meal and then realise that I am hungry
Get some sugar free gum and sugar free sweets
Sugar free ketchup has been a lifesaver
Make sure you only have veg on pv days with one meal, not every meal
M&S delli meats are great for lunchtime
If you really need a cheat, think Atkins - Cheese, a handful of nuts, Atkins crackers with butter (naughty, but sooooo nice)
Avoid alcohol if you possibly can - a glass of wine can so easily lead to a packet of crisps.
Always walk up stairs - if you are struggling to fit a walk in, do stairs at home for 10 mins
If you can afford it - buy a new pair of trousers at your current weight and smile when you have to give them to the charity shop when they are too big in a few weeks (this gave me a huge buzz)

I have oat and wheat bran in two Activia fat free yogurts every night for desert and this seems to get me through the evening.

For those of you who have stalled, Dukan says that it is more difficult in the Cruise phase if you have tried lots of diets in the past, but you will get there. It may just take a while for your body to realise that you mean business this time.

dott · 08/09/2010 18:15

Thank you insertexpletive, those are really good tips - veg only once a day on a pv day - i had been worried if things would get bit woolly then and how i would stay on the regime

congratulations on your achievement it is really motivating to hear how people have fared on this diet and how they succeeded.

Katisha · 08/09/2010 23:46

Oh dear. I did some baking this afternoon and made a cake and some biscuits. And therefore ate quite a bit of cake mix/buttercream/edges of biscuits-oh-ok-entire slice of cake...

I felt rather uncomfortably bloaty afterwards. That'll teach me.

Hi all
Hang in there Katisha get back on attack tomorrow, a blip can easily be put right.
I really want carbs today, TOTM, and want to eat a packet of garibaldis.

Not sure if I have ketosis mouth, bit metallic taste wise.

Had a glass of wine today not good, now want carbs.

I think the actimel/yakult lite is helping me feel a little less seized up with concrete inside.

And oh no it is the weekend coming, I really struggle at the weekend, but come Tuesday I can have a bag of spinach and that is somehtign to look forward to - not!

PandaBear · 10/09/2010 11:53

Hi dott - I know what you mean about the weekend. After all weekend's are supposed to be about letting off steam - not always possible to do with just a glass of water and a slab of meat on your plate!!! Oh well - I guess there's plenty of time to return to that.

I'm going to try to keep off the vino completely this weekend, but have doubts on whether I'll achieve this. I guess it remains to be seen.

Feeling a little tired and achy today and there are a big box of Roses that keep calling me... so far I've avoided them but they are going to have to go in the bin if it continues (my poor children!!)

Hope the rest of you have a good weekend!!!

saltcod · 10/09/2010 14:30

Hmm, I think I've well & truly fallen off the Dukan wagon & seem to have drifted into a modified Atkins version! Eating low-fat cheese & low carb crackers/cakes. Just couldn't face days of just meat. My latest thing is cheese & onion quiche but leaving the pastry!

Katisha · 10/09/2010 14:47

I'm sure that'll be fine Saltcod but keep an eye on carb counts in low fat versions of things. In Atkins initial phase you are only supposed to have 20g of carbs a day, if I remember correctly.

Well despite still being stalled, I went clothes shopping today and can't tell you how much I enjoyed the novelty of zips doing up easily. In fact now that I have so much more CHOICE over what to buy I hardly know where to start.

So I would say that feeling alone was worth sacrificing a few glasses of wine/weekend binges for!

moonshine · 10/09/2010 18:47

Some good tips insert - my jury is 'out' on the loads of water though. Cambridge and Lghterlife diets always encourage you to down litres of water but I did my own experiments and found it made no difference to my own weight-loss and speed whether I drank 0.5 litres or 5 litres a day of water.

I was at the end of my tether yesterday, like a lot of us seemed to have been this week. Work was horrendous - was faced with the standard sandwich buffet in a meeting and had forgotten my own food, and there was loads of my favourite fruit. Also I was pressurised to have a cake in the afternoon(but didn't).

And then I decided this was a bloody stupid diet that didn't fit in with my lifestyle.

But today I feel a lot better having finally seemingly dropped another pound. Finally.

However, it's unrealistic for me not to have a drink for the next couple of months so I will tonight and face the consequences...(and probably regret it but hey ho)

Who is having alcohol tonight then?

moonshine · 10/09/2010 18:49

Katisha - does that mean you reckon that you have been losing some inches over the past 2 weeks which hasn't shown up on the scale?

Katisha · 10/09/2010 19:12

No I don't think so - it's just that I haven't been clothes shopping for so long that it was all a rather novel experience.

However there are still no skirts/trousers that fit me because I have a relatively small waist compared to hips - I can get stuff to fit either waist or hips but not both. Really frustrating as I would like a straightish skirt that doesn't gape madly at the waist.

moonshine · 10/09/2010 19:22

Ah, I have a similar problem. Apparently I should be wearing pencil skirts but have never found one that is a good fit - although I suspect it is more to do with my fat stomach as well!

Katisha I am that shape, trousers that get over my hips are baggy on the waist and skirts etc it is very irritating

Lottie, hand in there you will be fine, just carry on and don't give up

I am still on the diet. My blip set me back days but back on the course now.

I am going to have my first veg on wednesday now, asparagus. I read that is is a diuretic.

Agree about the slab of meat and glass of water not happy about that and the weekend

Very stressed by house sale

I was 75.2 today I hope by Wednesday that I will be 73.5

dott · 11/09/2010 10:23

How is everyone's weekend going. Ok here so far, no booze or cake yet but going to party later so willhave to have my jaw metaphorically wired!

Katisha · 11/09/2010 14:57

Good going Dott. Yes i'd read that about the asparagus. Although suspect you might shift a bit of water for the next weigh-in, but it may not be a permanent solution to weight loss. I think the fluctuations in water retention are just something we have to come to terms with really.

Lottie - don't despair. It's all very well for Dukan in his book to talk about only having a social life once you have reached target weight, but real life doesn't work like that. The main thing is that you are mentally in the zone and wanting to lose the weight, so just see the last week as a sabbatical and on you go again. I am so pleased to have lost this 18/20 (fluctuates) pounds but never quite seemed to be in the mindset to do it over the last few years despite a few short-terms phases of low carb.

Yes it's dull only eating the meat but really - the benfits really do outweigh the boredom, and the sooner the weight comes off the sooner we can all start eating (relatively) normally again.

Don't get on the scales till the end of the week. What would be the point? You know that you will have a load of water retention etc. I doubt you'll have put fat on as you probably haven't eaten enough extra for that.
Don't depress yourself - just get back on track and carry on.

(I think the odd carb binge is a recognised tactic in some low-carb diets anyway - stops the body from getting into too much of a state of trying to hold on to fat when you want it to be letting it go! Carb cycling does this.)

dott · 11/09/2010 21:09

I ate some honey sausages today and some dairylead lite, at party, so not the best and I feel awful TOTM and I usually have lots of carbs to ge me through

Todays another day

dott · 11/09/2010 21:17

I have found this blog helpful here

saltcod · 11/09/2010 21:20

Dott, that's pretty damn good considering you've been at a party - well done for not caving in & scoffing all that lovely party food!

Well, I'm def. more Atkins than Dukan - today I made a gorgeous lasagne which just about scraped past the low carb barrier - low fat cheese, skimmed milk and low carb pasta (my life saver this week). Best meal I've had in 2 weeks - felt properly full up! Weight has slowly crept back down again after last weekend's birthday blip. Have lost just under 5lb in 2 weeks, so ok but not as fast as I'd hoped for. Off to do the 30 day shred dvd now. Think I need to get my metabolism going to help those pounds melt away! Have had a new haircut today, so would be nice to have a new figure to go with it soon :)

I seem to have plateaued so it would appear eating slightly higher fat protein and the odd bit of carb ie the honey sausages is having an effect Sad
Fed up this means egg whites and white fish I suppose, how awful.

Lottie, sorry to hear you are feeling down, where are you living abroad? HOw about a walk that can sometimes lift my spirits or tucking up with a good book?
