I really AM going to Low Carb this time...

And DH has promised to join me. But not until after our big night away without the kids next week. So lots of time to procrastinate plan ahead I've ordered India's book. And have an old copy of Atkins' upstairs.

I will need a sugar substitute I think. And, ahem, fibre. Are linseeds low carb? Can you eat them in induction? And I will need to plan my snackage.

And how to get through the first week or two weeks? What helped you not cave in at the first cravings or headaches? And did I read somewhere you can test your piss? Or is that not strictly necessary?

That was an awful long post, sorry. And I do appear to use ! rather excessively

FrazzledBlob · 30/03/2010 10:42

morning everyone

fingers crossed i have managed some scrambled egg this morning. I checked my weight this morning and i have lost 5lb, not happy about the way its happend though.

I am getting grief from everyone now about the LC diet i have tried explaining the gallstones are more likely the result of the years of low fat yoyo dieting but they won't have it

Having a look round the board for another plan to follow for the meantime as I will not regain this weight!!

Moan over Hello to all the recent joiners Don't let me put you off as up until last week I have felt great low carbing. Have no idea re breast feeding. The only thing that kept me awake for night feeds was eating You could always look at adapting a low carb plan so you are not fully restricting your carb intake?

zumba sounds fun. I however would be useless as i can't tell me left foot from my right! i gave up exercise classes years ago as everyone else would be off in one direction and i'd be doing the opposite

woahthere · 30/03/2010 13:41

londonlottie, i think its a really bad idea to low carb while youre breastfeeding, if the ketones are released into your body they will go through your breastmilk. Also low carbing makes you feel like shit for a while...you really dont need that having just given birth and looking after 2 babies...you need your energy! Maybe cut down on carbs or just have good ones like eating sweet potatoes and brown rice instead of bread and pastas and biscuits ! I really think you need them right now. x

bunjies · 30/03/2010 17:25

Thanks for the welcome.

Gibbberish - do you use the Pig2Twig forum too? I remember seeing a post about zumba classes on there. I am Bornagain on P2T.

Jacaqueen, self-sabotage is so common. Please don't beat yourself up about it. Just forget it, drink loads of water and carry on. When I feel the urge to stuff my face I try and make sure I only eat low carb food (even it's loads of it!). So lots of nuts, pork scratchings, 90% dark chocolate, solid creamed coconut, cheese etc.It helps that these are all very high fat foods which make you feel full and satisfied.

gibbberish · 30/03/2010 18:02

Yes, I am on there as artymidget. Will look out for you!

Is absolutely blowing a gale and snowing/sleeting here. Really awful weather.

MrsDoolittle · 30/03/2010 18:16

Not amateur psychobabble at all, perfectly plausible. I'm similar, in fact once I start I can't stop. If I'm honest with myself, I don't really do me any favours by 'treating' myself.

Sal, our meal last night really was a celebration of going back to 'normal' eating for us, it's what we like eating.

Warm leek and White Bean Salad.

5tbsp of rapeseed oil

2 large leeks finely sliced

410g tin of white beans, I use haricot.

10g parsley

1 tbsp of Dijon mustard

1 tsp of wholegrain mustard

2 tsp of cider vinegar (keep forgetting to get this so I use white whine vinegar)

and a pinch of caster sugar (I guess you could use sweetener)

Heat the oil and soften the leeks slowly over a moderate heat, do not allow them to colour. Cook for 10 minutes stirring from time to time.
Add beans and heat through, take off the heat, add parsley and plenty of black pepper.
Whisk the mustard, vinegar and sugar together as a dressing and stir into the leeks and beans

et Voila!!

Should serve 4 (it serves 2 of us)
222 kcals
15g fat
2g saturated fat
1.1 g salt
4g of sugar per serving.

So fairly low carb, I guess

Tastes scrummy. I know the fish had only good calories

MrsDoolittle · 30/03/2010 18:29

What a nice, friendly thread this is.

What do people eat for breakfast that doesn't include eggs? I tend to eat eggs during the days and quite a bit at the weekend, I'd like some other recipes that will accommodate the usual craziness in the morning going to work/school.

I had bran flakes for breakfast, not too many though. I know I shouldn't have...

MrsDoolittle · 30/03/2010 19:15

Gibberish, I've joined as Daydreaming.

Hello everyone and thank you for the welcome, I should have said this before but I got carried away posting again

Well done sal Sounds like you have everything back under control again.

mrsdoolittle I said hello over on the other thread. then said hello again when I realised who you were

I'm feeling a bit blegh today. Not health wise, just emotion wise. Think I am becoming bi-polar - one day am on the top of the world, the next in the depths of depression. Very odd

Anyhoo, still going strong and not feeling the need to cheat. Might go to another Zumba class tonight to pick myself up mentally.

gibbberish · 31/03/2010 09:57

oh btw for brekkie:

peanut butter and celery (yum)

full fat cream cheese and celery or cucumber

Avocado and bacon melt

Left overs from the evening meal before (I know this might be weird)

Smoked fish with butter and tomatoes (microwaved so is very quick)

Grilled large mushroom with bacon and cream cheese

bunjies · 31/03/2010 17:20

I second full fat greek yoghurt for breakfast. I usually have it with some yacon syrup (a natural sweetener which is a pro-biotic and very good for you but doesn't affect blood sugar levels). Also tried the yoghurt with a spoonful of peanut butter mixed in and it was delicious and very filling.

MrsDoolittle · 31/03/2010 19:56

Oh Wow thank you gibberish and bunjies, they all sound delicious.
I love full fat greek yoghurt but can I eat that on P1?

I think all of us have a tendency to be bi-polar, I definitely have. I'm very temperamental. The fact is, mental health exists along a spectrum, it's not mental 'unhealth' until it prevents you living a 'normal' life. As women we are all prone to it.

Have you ever heard of the Helmann Brain Model?

MrsDoolittle · 31/03/2010 20:09

Sal, I hope you're feeling better. If you've lost two stone though I probly wouldn't recognise you

I was eating Greek yoghurt and frozen summer fruits before I went on the Tesco diet, it was much nicer then. I found that using frozen berries mwas cheapest and if you microwave them before adding them to your yoghurt, hot berries on cold yoghurt is a nice touch! Blueberries can be expensive.

gibbberish · 31/03/2010 21:02

No yoghurt on P1 I think. Will scour through the book though to check. Is def allowed on P2.

Helmann Brain Model? Nope never heard of it. What is it?

Just made onion bhajias for tomorrow's dinner. Scoffed two. Absolutely gorgeous!

I?ve not been around for a while as been really busy with work etc and miss my chatting time so it?s nice to be back. I hope everyone are doing well and I apologise that I would never be able to catch up on missed news so could someone fill me in if I have missed anything major please.

The last couple of weeks I have just lost 1/2 lb each week so weight loss really slowed down.

Having said that, from this week now I am not eating mainly the Go Lower food anymore, I'm making mostly my own food too. Well, I have just started doing this since Monday so it's still new and we'll see how it goes. I have to admit the first couple of days I haven't been very good. It must be the freedom lol! We have had a religious holiday which involved a big family meal and I was very naughty and indulged in one roast potato each of the two days. Feeling a bit guilty now but couldn't say no.

Enchilada81 · 01/04/2010 07:47

Nice to see how everyone is getting on and I'm impressed by all the willpower! Throw some this way please ...

Well I have to admit now, since I stopped low-carbing I have gone back up 3lbs. I now weigh 11st 3lbs.

So, new stratagey I think! I was speaking to a nurse (off the professional record of couse!) about the whole thing and she does it like this ...

Low carb for 2 weeks - Lose between 4 - 6lbs.

Eat small portions of normal for a week - Gain 2lbs ...

Low carb again for a fortnight, lose around 4lbs ...

So basically whilst your weight loss is slowed down somewhat, you still lose more than you gain and your body isn't affected too much by the ketosis.

Apparantly Ketosis really starts to take it's tole after 2 weeks ... which is probably why I had to throw in the towel when I did.

So I'm trying it her way now. Will keep you informed!

gibbberish · 01/04/2010 11:05

Morning!

Mrsdoolittle, no yoghurt on ph1 according to the pink bible.

Sal, I'll hunt under my stairs for the boots and leave them just inside the cupboard door for easy access... well done on being good!

mummymels was wondering how you were getting on. I read all about your diet with much interest when I was thinking of going low carb.

Enchilada, so glad you are still with us. That sounds like a do-able plan! Will await your results with interest.

I am on a high again! Feeling very good. Made onion bhajias last night and had two. Very lovely. Then suddenly had an overwhileming urge to eat everything else in the cupboard too. Don't know why. But didnt, just had water and went to bed. Feel absolutely find today and so glad I didnt binge!

MrsDoolittle · 01/04/2010 12:19

Morning Ladies,
I didn't really have enough for a P1 breakfast this morning and I'm not sure if I'm being realistic starting P1 before the Easter weekend, so I had a small bowl of Bran flakes for breakfast and I just had some leftover crustless quiche from last night with crunchy salad and a little mayonnaise.
I think we're having lamb meatballs in a tomato sauce and veg for dinner tonight. I'll steam some new potatoes for the children.

On another note, dealing with Easter - how are you doing it?
I have decided I'm going to try and not have any chocolate at all because I can never do things by halves. If I eat some chocolate I'll demolish the whole box :-(
However, I am going to allow myself red wine, but no white, and lots of cheese; my parents have just come back from a trip to France. I'll do my best to avoid biscuits and after dinner liqueurs. I WILL say No to dessert.

I have a work meeting this afternoon and I'll take some nuts to in my bag. I'll start P1 when I get back. Those onion bhajis look lovely, it's great to have some new recipes this time round because I had got bored of the recipes I used last time.

I am meeting an old friend for lunch next week, we haven't seen each other in years. This is the only blip in my P1 calender. Do you have any tips on dealing with this and not being completely unsociable? I shan't be drinking because I'm driving.

travellingwilbury · 01/04/2010 14:57

Hello all , I just wanted to check in , I am on week two now and I am still losing

I have lost 11 pounds so far and I am really pleased with how it is going .

We have got a busy weekend and loads of people coming round on sunday so I am going to have to keep resisting the chocolate . But so far so good , I am not getting hungry and I have managed not to cheat at all so far . I just hope I can keep it up .

Just need to find some more interesting recipes , so I think I will order a book today .

ohnono · 01/04/2010 15:39

Hi all I new to mumsnet and so so please to find this thread I am on week two of the pink book and it's going ok so far. Felt like s* most of the first week but lost 6lbs so that was great. Second week feel great but loss seems slower (sorry but can stop myself getting on the scales every morning).

I had my first go at eating out this lunchtime - holiday treat for the kids so we went to Gourmet Burger Kitchen I had burger (no bun) with avocado & bacon NO CHIPS and a green salad with house dressing (probably loaded with sugar!) and some coleslaw. Felt very full after and more than a little paranoid about what was on the dressing and coleslaw. Has anyone else tried GBK been ok?

also - somebody in a previous message wrote about not sticking with it because the ketosis really kicks in after week 2 - can you expand a little?

For the record I started at 14st 3lbs and end of first week was 13st 9lbs. My target is 9st. I am only 5'2" so i really was an egg on legs.

gibbberish · 01/04/2010 15:54

MrsDoolittle sorry cant help you with chocolate problem. I dont have a sweet tooth atall so can resist sweet stuff easily. It's salty stuff I am addicted to so cant have any peanuts (tried to limit them at the beginning of the diet but it was just too hard so dont buy them now). Sounds like you have the determination to resist though.

That's brilliant travellingwilbury! Only a few more pounds before a whole stone is gone!

Hello ohnono (and welcome to mn ). I too am a scale hopper. Can't help it! Have never been to Gourmet Burger Kitchen but is sounds delicious!
