As promised, a new thread for those of us following GI.

There's a separate thread for recipes now - thanks to those of you doing the cutting and pasting of recipes .

I've lost 2 lbs this week, so that's goodbye to the 6lbs I put on in my 2 day "breadfest" !

How did you do this week Melbob?

melbob · 31/08/2005 20:36

Only a pound which is a bit of a b**r. but better than nothing i suppose

Saker · 31/08/2005 23:13

Well done - every little counts.

melbob · 01/09/2005 01:26

Could really do with a lot 'though!

Saker · 01/09/2005 09:31

I know what you mean - I seem to be a bit stuck at the minute. I haven't weighed properly because my weigh in day is supposed to be Sat but every now and then I stand on the scales fully dressed in the middle of the day and the result is not good even allowing for the extra clothes. I think I am being reasonably good though again we had some friends over bank holiday and I made and ate apple crumble. But surely that by itself can't ruin the rest of the week?

Anyway moment of truth on Saturday.

melbob · 01/09/2005 20:09

Good luck for Sat. I know what you mean about just one thing

We are off to Cardiff for weekend to see loads of old friends (I lived there for 8 years) So I think it will be dificult to keep to low GI.

Saker · 01/09/2005 22:31

I know Puff has been on holiday but I think everyone else has deserted us on this thread.

Have a nice time in Cardiff.

melbob · 02/09/2005 07:34

I know I suppose its school holidays etc. I find it helpful so I hope we can keep it going. may be when hol period is over we will get a few more

Saker · 02/09/2005 22:34

Sorry EBFM didn't see this until this evening. Basically plenty of fresh fruit and veg and salad, pulses and beans (dried or tinned), possibly sweetener if you don't mind using this instead of sugar and porridge! Yoghurt, cottage cheese, low fat cheese, chicken, fish. Pasta preferably wholemeal and bulghar wheat.

YOu need to stay clear of much bread, rice (except basmati), potatoes, cakes, biscuits etc.

HTH. Good luck.

puff · 05/09/2005 11:37

Hi all, back from a fab week in Spain - braved the scales and had put on 5lbs - not too horrendous. Aiming to shift this over next 2 weeks and then carry on with diet as normal.

I've also joined a health club - they had a special offer on, so I took the plunge. Gym assessment on Weds .

Saker · 05/09/2005 22:18

Glad you had a nice time Puff. I think the first few holiday pounds come off easier (says me still stuck 4 pounds heavier than when I came back ).

Good luck with the health club. You might find that really speeds things up. I do quite a lot of exercise and generally feel better for it although I don't always feel like doing it.

melbob · 06/09/2005 21:44

Welcome back Puff. Glad you had good time. I used to go to gym and really got a buzz out of it.

Hi Saker how you doing?

Hi EBFM how dod it go?

stayed te same this week which I am vv grateful after my Cardiff experience.

Saker · 06/09/2005 22:16

Well done Melbob! I'm not doing brilliantly and stayed the same again this week. However, DH measured my %fat for me which he does every 3 weeks and that had gone down to what I was pre-holiday. So didn't feel so bad.

However have to admit I haven't been very well behaved. Made Ds1 a novelty birthday cake which involved a lot of butter icing and trimming bits off cake and I am just shocking for popping bits in my mouth the whole time. And once I start I can't stop. And then I ate loads of the actual cake.

So full of good resolutions again but must stay away from cakes.

puff · 07/09/2005 17:24

well done on staying the same melbob - that's good in the circumstances.

lol Saker about the cake! Dh keeps asking me when our Kenwood Chef will be making yummy things again - not for a while as I find them yummy too and can't stop!

melbob · 07/09/2005 20:38

I am a terrible picker. I swear if I was a sahm I would weigh ten times more (shudders at thought!) DS love white toast and so do I so when he ahs it its sooooooooooooooo hard not to hoover it up.

Saker · 07/09/2005 21:14

I get really cross with myself for picking because I end up consuming as many calories without the pleasure of actually sitting down and enjoying them. It really is my downfall; I have never been in the habit of eating chocolate and find it relatively easy to get round the supermarket without buying anything bad but as soon as I make anything nice for the children then I have to "taste" it myself.

I read on the other thread that you have lost most of your holiday gain already Puff so well done! It's funny how easily that first bit comes off isn't it? I think there must be some sort of temporary fat store that is easily mobilised or something.

melbob · 07/09/2005 21:58

Saker don't be too har don yourself your doing really well.

Well done Puff.

melbob · 07/09/2005 22:00

DH made victoria sponge the ther day. I picked som many bits I miht as well have had a slice.

puff · 08/09/2005 09:54

Agree with melbob Saker - you are doing great !

Well, I seem to have lost the 5lbs I put on last week already! I love GI . It's not just the diet though - I've realised it's not just about dieting, it's also about monitoring my weight (not obsessively of course). Its the few pounds here and there creeping on over time that causes the problems in the longer term. By braving the scales when I know I've indulged, I'm learning to manage my weight effectively. Phew!

Saker · 08/09/2005 14:26

Thank you both .

Puff that's brilliant. It means you can really enjoy holidays and know you can sort it out quickly when you get back. How did you get on at the gym?

I know exactly what you mean about monitoring the weight. I have found that over the years I have mentally adjusted what I felt was an acceptable weight for me. Every year or two it crept up half a stone usually following holidays and Christmas.

puff · 08/09/2005 17:50

The gym is great Saker. Things have changed since I last braved one ! I had my induction, which included using the computerised progress system - it monitors what you are doing, whether your "range of movement" on the equipment is correct etc etc!!! No excuses now then - review with fitness instructor in 6 weeks ! Plus I get to take the kids swimming (it's free for them, part of my membership), which is lovely.

melbob · 09/09/2005 19:50

Hi all. i am really struggling with motivation at the moment. Any tips?

puff · 09/09/2005 20:49

Do you know why melbob? I know I've had times where I've felt it was a mountain to climb as I had so much to lose.

Saker · 09/09/2005 23:06

Sorry you're feeling like this Melbob. Do you think it would help to take say one day off and eat whatever you want? Sometimes I find that the things I thought I craved weren't really worth it after all when I actually have them. Or do you think that might just start you on the slippery slope....
