I am in 3 + stones more you. I've heard that weight loss is harder the leaner you are. Don't know if this is true as never go that near it !

melbob · 27/07/2005 07:35

Lost another 1.5lbs which I am chuffed about as it was DS first birhday party on Sunday and DN 6th yesterday

melbob · 30/07/2005 15:57

Helloooooooooooo

dizzymama · 30/07/2005 17:13

Hi Melbob! I'm certainly on a plateau at the moment but you sound like you're going great guns, keep it up chuck! I WILL start to lose again soon, I must do, surely??

puff · 31/07/2005 10:41

melbob, you are doing so well .

I have to report that since my last post I have lost half a stone - it was effortless due to being rather ill with a virus that affects the muscles between the ribs, which then turned into flu.

Felt grim, but rather chuffed with the side effect !

Caribbeanqueen · 31/07/2005 11:07

Well I'm back to my original weight of January, which is why I haven't been posting on this thread much! Dp and I are going to try and start again tomorrow, but I am struggling quite a bit with emotional eating at the moment.

Will hopefully be posting more regularly now and will be rereading thid thread for inspiration!

melbob · 31/07/2005 20:05

Hi all. Glad your all around. CQ and Dizzymama keep on going if I can, anyone can.

Puff hope you are feeling better, not the nicest way to loose weight but there has to be some consolation to being poorly . How's your hip?

topaz76 · 01/08/2005 12:29

hello there
just starting this
and now i'm confused - is there a recommended number of GL's that we can eat. Or Gi's....arggh i'm frustrated.
New on mum's net. i have a daughter aged 3 and i still haven't lost the baby weight....no excuse now.

melbob · 01/08/2005 19:50

Hi Topaz76,
There's no amount you have to eat just keep to low GI foods and reasonable portions of protein. If you look at the times website women.timesonline.co.uk it has quite a good explaination and some good recipes. it is worth a go I am usually hopeless with diets but have manage to loose 1.5 stone in about 9 weeks and its not been hard.

puff · 02/08/2005 22:32

My hip is much better thanks melbob .

melbob · 02/08/2005 22:43

Total weight loss now 9.5kg whoopeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

topaz76 · 03/08/2005 09:49

hello melbob
well done on your weightloss - have you got a plan that you are following. I bought the GL book but haven't read much of it. I'm a little confused - i'm fed-up of this diet treadmill and i'm deperate to loose weight and look good. Well done for loosing so much weight. I'm about 2.5stones over weight and ideally want to loose this by october/november time. How have u done it - what programme are you following. Sorry loads of questions but I need some help.
thanks

melbob · 03/08/2005 19:48

Hi

Thanks Puff and Topaz.

Topaz, I am sure you could do 2.5 stone by oct/nov and I know exactly what you mean about the diet tradmill thats exactly how I feel. So far I have found GI very easy to incorporate in my life.

I used the Helen Foster book for the first fortnight which has a set plan which I found useful to follow and th book sets out the principles clearly. I now do my own thing and refer back to the Helen Foster book. It useful because my DH is a SAHD and does all our shopping and cooking. The HF book gives him a guide. I bought it on recommendation of MNers.
They also recommended the Anthony Worrall Tomson GI book which I have but have n't used yet but the recipes do look delicious.

The Rick Gallop books are a ripoff if yopu by both you only need the one with the green cover.

Other MNers have used Tesco e-diets which apparently tell yo exactly what to eat.

Timesonlines women's section has alot about GI and some nice recipes too.

Puff, Saker, Dizzymama and others have been a great support on here. Puff is a real inspiration she has lost several stone.

Hope this helps

topaz76 · 04/08/2005 11:55

morning ladies
will have to get this helen foster book
i have one by Nick someone that i'm sure i read somewhere here that it was good.
Puff - so what's your secret????
You girlies will have to help me..
so far today - muller light and some grapes.

piffle · 04/08/2005 12:00

I've lost 3kgs and am stuck now on a plateau for about one month, that said I am reasonably happy with my weight, but would like to shift just one or two more for true satisfaction!

puff · 04/08/2005 13:10

Topaz - I've now lost nearly 6 stone. Admittedly, half a stone of that recently, is due to having a nasty virus!

I've been following GI for 11 months.

The things I do, when I'm being really good and so get good weight losses:

Make sure I eat some protein at each meal.

Eliminate wheat as much as possible, eg I've pretty much stopped eating bread. This isn't part of the GI philosophy necessarily, but wheat seems to be a problem food for me - triggers cravings for naughty carbohydrates etc!

Keep eating of processed foods to an absolute minimum.

Weigh portions of carbohydrates like new potatoes and rice (from memory, I always stick to 50g dry weight of rice for instance) in a meal.

I feel that basing my eating on GI principles has become a way of life for me, rather than a diet I do for a while. I've spent 20 years trying to stabilise my weight, although previously I would only needed to diet off at most 1-3 stone. At last, I've found something that will work for me in the long term!

topaz76 · 05/08/2005 09:48

hello Puff you are amazing.
I just need to get motivated.
i'm very good in the day - but the evening is bad - and i have biscuits with my tea and then have rice for dinner with some fattening sauce.
well done - I will start to weigh my stuff too - i'm going to go down to WhSMith and get the Helen Foster easy GI book. Is that what you are doing as well. How did you motivate yourself to do this?

puff · 05/08/2005 11:59

topaz, I like the Helen Forster book - lots of yum recipes in there. I tend to use my recipe books as a guide now as I've been doing it for so long.

If you want to know about my motivation, I'll give you a bit of background.

Prior to a few years ago, I think I was fairly typical in that I stayed within a certain weight range - so I'd put some weight on perhaps, but if say I'd let a couple of stone creep on, that wasn't too horrendous to diet off.

However, 5 years ago, my Mum killed herself when I was pregnant with ds1. One of the effects on me was that I began to comfort eat (very badly). In 3 years I piled on around 8 stone - Ok there were 2 pregnancies in that time, but my weight was out of control.

I found it really difficult to shift, and also, for a long time didn't have the energy or willpower to do it, it felt like such a mountain to climb. I was also doing things like not really eating properly during the day and then gorging on all the wrong things when the children were in bed.

Last year (August) I think something clicked in my head - I knew I had to stop letting Mum's death get in the way of me living my life and being happy. I decided I was going to tackle my weight and that it didn't matter how long it was going to take. I'd found out about GI through a friend who is diabetic, so started to adjust my eating around the basic ideas. Then, the GI Diet started to be publicised widely and I was able to get more ideas and recipes to help me.

It is really lovely now, to have people I haven't seen for a while, tell me how great I look! A couple of times I've been bemused because my hair is greasy and I'm wearing my scruffiest t shirt , but they are quite astounded at the weight loss.

I haven't lost weight every week, and sometimes I have put on (6lbs once during a weekend in Barcelona, eating loads of lovely bread !), but I find GI easy to get back on track with.

Good luck with it, we will be here to offer support .

melbob · 05/08/2005 20:09

Topaz See I told you Puff was an inspiration.

Puff I didn't know your story. I know this will sound ucky but in all sincerity you are tremendous

Saker · 08/08/2005 16:29

Well done everyone for the recent weight losses! Puff I am sorry you have been ill. I hope you feel a bit better now. Thanks for posting your story - it's difficult to know what to say that doesn't sound gushy, but I really admire your courage and also how long you have stuck at it.

Well we had a nice holiday and I managed to gain 10pounds . I thought I was doing alright until I got on the scales . I did eat just normal breakfasts and I didn't buy loads of French pastries, brioche etc but I did pig out a bit on bread and butter which I have really missed so that is probably the culprit. Plus it is impossible to buy wholegrain bread in France. However I usually find with holidays that a bit of the gain comes off again quickly so I am hoping 10pounds doesn't equal 10 weeks of dieting. Either way I have been back on the GI diet since I set foot in England and I'm quite relieved in a way, I especially missed my lentils!

melbob · 08/08/2005 19:48

OMG I have put on 9lbs since friday. I really haven't been bad. All I strayed with was three small slices of white bread and butter.

Staying on diet but am gobsmacked
