New thread! Other one got a bit long!

Hmmmm. I found a spag bol recipe on the sw website but it didn't have any syns, so not sure we're looking at the same thing.

I've seen a few recipes like that which have unexpected syns in them, I asked my consultant about it and she said that a recipe may not contain a full portion of a he, eg the recipe may have 1oz cheese but if that makes 2 portions it's not a full he portion of cheese per person. In those cases it doesn't count as a he and has to be synned instead.

Hope I've explained that properly. Oh and, obv, I meant lean mince in my last post.

applepudding · 13/03/2009 22:34

I have made spag bol dry frying mince, onion, pepper, garlic, adding tin toms, bovril stock.

I assumed that was sin free.

I've also made chilli con carne (add tin kidney beans, chilli flakes) and cottage pie (carrots and celery instead of the pepper, mash potato with natural yogurt) along the same lines.

I also like different casseroles - beef or lamb, different veg, bovril stock - done in the slow cooker.

I'm a bit lost with chicken apart from roast - I just count syns for the gravy - so would also appreciate some chicken recipes. I was just thinking of trying to do some sort of coq au vin with some lean bacon pieces and mushrooms - but I suppose you cant have coq au vin without the vin!!!

nikkid21 · 14/03/2009 15:20

For the chicken breats I put a little bit of crushed garlic in the center of the breast and then wrap the whole thing in bacon. You can freeze them fine and they are free on red. I have it with roasted butternut squash and red onions.

You could roast the whole chicken and add it to a stirfry. Then make a soup with the bones. Or do a syn free chicken stew with it with swede, carrots, onion and bovril.

I don't know if I this is right or not but I make a big stew. Then on the first day I eat all of the meat (red) and some of the veg from it. On the second day I have the lovely stew gravy with veg and a big pile of mash. (green)

nikkid21 · 14/03/2009 15:26

Saw on the other thread that someone is doing the scan bran challenge. I like the ginger cake that you make with it.- only 2 syns for the whole thing if you use the scan brand as a B.

5 scan bran (1 X Heb) mushed up with some boiling water. Add 2 eggs , 1 tsp mixed spice, 2 tsp ground ginger, 1 tbsp golden syrup (2 syns) and some canderel.

Mix together and put in a fry light greased pudding bowl. Then cook in microwave for 5 mins or so. I have it with a vanilla mullerlight on top.

ProfYaffle · 14/03/2009 15:35

nikki - the chicken and bacon thing sounds nice. I imagine some he cheese melted on top would be good too!

soon2befamilyof4 · 14/03/2009 21:16

Oh yes I am going to do chicken breast tomorrow, with the garlic in the middle, wrapped in bacon and cheese as HE on top! Yummy!! How do you cook it? Do you put everything in raw and stick in the oven? I am new to cooking from scratch so a bit of a dummy! Would the chicken take longer to cook than the bacon though? Or do you just cook them seperately? Sorry I need step by step guides! . Will do that tomorrow.

Bit disapointed as I bought lots of meat from tesco - 3 for £10 and realised when I got home, they are all quite short dates . Might have to freeze some of it but thats annoying as I would like to have the option to freeze once half prepared (ie your suggestion to freeze the chicken and bacon thing).

I made the fish and chips the other day and it was lovely. Had loads of breadcrumbs left over though. DH loved it and he was insistant that the only fish he likes is from a fish and chip shop .

applepudding · 14/03/2009 21:57

Has anybody tried quark?

I was looking at at the chicken breast and bacon recipe with the suggestion of cheese and wondering if I could mix the garlic with quark before wrapping the bacon. I'm doing Extra Easy so I only get one option A which I take as my milk so I can't use cheese unless syns (which I prefer to save for wine or choc).

I've just bought some quark but I've never tried it before - I was also thinking does it do creamy sauce on pasta? I'm just a bit unsure as mostly when I've tried substitute things like quorn for meat I havent liked them.

soon2befamilyof4 · 14/03/2009 22:02

Sorry to sound really silly but what is quark?

applepudding · 14/03/2009 22:41

Um I think its a mixture between smooth cottage cheese and fromage frais, not too sure as I've never eaten any. It often features in recipes in SW magazine.

soon2befamilyof4 · 14/03/2009 22:48

Can you eat it when you are pregnant? I know you are not meant to eat certain cheeses?

applepudding · 14/03/2009 23:38

I don't know really - probably as from memory its only cheeses that are unpasteurised or blue that you can't eat.

I think its fat free and something you use to replace cream or cheese in cooking if you are trying to avoid fat. I'm just thinking does it taste horrible, and has anybody cooked with it?

I have bought some today and am thinking of doing it as a pasta sauce. I'll report back when I've tried it!!

soon2befamilyof4 · 14/03/2009 23:58

Yes definatly let us know. I LOVE anything cheesy or creamy so something like that sounds great if it tastes ok!

snottymcgrotty · 15/03/2009 00:00

Hi, I've been posting on the other SW thread, but wanted to mark this one in case there are some good ideas to pinch !!

I was the one who mentioned the "scanbran challenge", I'm not doing it properly as didn't want to be tied to loo all week couldn't think how I could possibly eat that much every day without being totally bored (or making a cake every day).

I've got some Quark lurking in my fridge too, but not yet planned what to use it in ! Await your pasta sauce report with interest !!

MrsMopple · 15/03/2009 00:11

Sorry, I haven't read all the posts, but saw the 'what do you do with chicken' question so thought I'd share.
We tend to have a roast chicken every sunday at the mo, then once it's cooled, I pick the bones clean and use the chicken to add to a risotto (71g cooked as a 'b'choice on a green day). I don't make proper risotto, btw, just fry light some onions, peppers, mushrooms and whatever other veg is lurking in the fridge, then add some cooked brown rice and the chicken and stir it all together, adding soy sauce if needed.
Or, I use it for chicken curry using Pathaks balti paste (3 syns for 1 tbsp), which is yummy, but the cooked chicken sometimes breaks down while it's cooking, which tastes fine but looks a bit odd.
I'm a bit of a cheat on SW, though, but I'm still disappointed if I haven't lost anything when I get on the scales which is just daft!

ProfYaffle · 15/03/2009 07:38

Soon2bd - I read Nikki's recipe as raw chicken and bacon, probably wrapped in foil. As the he cheese is quite a small amount it would need to go in at the end I think.

Mind you I hardly buy chicken breasts anymore, they're so expensive.

I also imagine Quark to be fine in pregnancy as it's processed.

soon2befamilyof4 · 15/03/2009 08:05

Yes chicken breasts are very expensive. It wasn't till I got home from tesco, I realised I paid the same amount for 2 chicken breasts as I did for the whole chicken!! But I know I used to always buy frozen chicken portions, which weren't breasts but were indervidual sizes. I wonder if it would work the same? Wouldn't be able to cut it open to put garlic in the middle but could maybe put it on the outside, between the chicken and the bacon? They were very cheap I think, I used to buy the value bags from sainsburys. Can't think how much they were but remember they were cheap. I ran this reciepe idea past DH when he got in last night and he difinatly liked the sound of them!

Hi

Does anyone know this weeks password, written it down somewhere but can`t find it

Please help

ProfYaffle · 15/03/2009 13:43

It's 'walking'

nikkid21 · 15/03/2009 13:46

The chicken and bacon I just stick in the over at 180 degrees for 35 mins or so. The bacon goes nice and crispy on the outside while the chicken stays moist. I don't bother with foil. On thing - don't panic if the outside of the chicken is pink. The bacon seems to stain it - if it cooked in the middle then it's fine.

If you are going to add the cheese I would sprinkle it on at the end and put under the grill for a couple of mins.

Quark - Lots of people at my group mix it with lemon curd or peanut butter. Then you leave it to mature in the fridge for 24 hours or so and it soaks up the flavour but the syns go further iykwim. Personally I find the texture too grainy and don't like it.

I make a quark quiche with fry light fried onions, tomatoes, a he A of strong flavoured cheese, 3 eggs & a tub of quark. Mix the whole lot together and cook in frylight greased flan dish in a medium over for 25 mins or until set. It's a nicer texture then the sw cottage cheese version (smoother and less like baby milk vomit). You can add sweetcorn or slices of cooked potato on green day and bacon or chopped up syn fre sausage on a red day.

I tend to have one in the fridge every week and snack on it over a couple of days.

Am having gammon with roasted veggies for dinner tonight. I chop up red onions, butternut squash & carrots then spray with frylight and sprinkle on rosemary, thyme and basil. Really yummy and means that i don't miss roast potatoes too much.

Pudding is going to be a meringue nest (3 syns) filled with frozen red berries and topped with some fat free total yoghurt that's been sweetened with canderel.

Sorry if i've gone on but i love cooking! Off to make biccies with the kids now.

soon2befamilyof4 · 15/03/2009 14:22

Nikki - are we not allowed roast potatoes? I thought it was ok as long as we just use frylight?

Thanks for the info on the chicken, I am making it tonight and can't wait. It actually sounds really simple too! The garlic, do you just crush raw garlic in the middle? How much do you use? If I wanted it so my bacon wasn't that crispy (DH likes his crispy, I don't really). And do you think it would be ok with chicken "portions" rather than fillets, so it couldn't be cut open, but the garlic could be spread on the outside, between chicken and bacon?

nikkid21 · 15/03/2009 14:29

Roast potatoes - fine on a green day if you want to measure out your meat. On a red day you have to leave the skin on - so not really roasties more like sw chips.

With the garlic I used lazy garlic which is already liced and cushed out of a jar. Depends how strong you want it - guess it would be around 1/2 clove per portion. I don't see why it wouldn't work on the outside of the chicken as long as the bacon covers it.

If you don't want your bacon crispy just cover it with some foil at the end when it starts to crisp up.

soon2befamilyof4 · 15/03/2009 14:34

Thank you. Sorry - i said I needed lots of help! Lol. I always use fresh garlic, because I love it and find the dried one doesn't taste as much. We use garlic a lot though and with a crusher it takes about 10 seconds to do.

I do extra easy - so are the roast pots ok?

ProfYaffle · 15/03/2009 15:15

Fry light roasties should be ok on EE. I did some yesterday and sprinkled them with celery salt, was lovely, needed gravy though.

LittleMissFickle · 15/03/2009 16:23

Ceolas · 15/03/2009 19:43

hello

Can I hijack for a moment and ask you ladies for some advice?

I read that you can follow SW when pregnant if you are already a member, but is it OK to join when you're pg? I'm 18 weeks atm.
