I love my slow cooker although my fave recipe is shin beef with a lot of beer so I haven't done that since starting sw! I don't use recipes very often, but tend to just chuck stuff in it. My standard is beef with onion, carrot and bovril stock with a handful of pearl barley to thicken. It's free of EE but you'd have to syn the barley on an original day, or you could use cornflour, also syned.

I also like whole chicken in the slow cooker. Screw up 2 or 3 handfuls of foil and put them at the bottom. Put garlic, a halved lemon and a handful of thyme inside the bird, put it on top of the foil and leave in the slow cooker for 4 hrs. The skin won't go crispy but the meat is meltingly tender, gorgeous.

Congrats on your losses everyone. I've lost a total of 11lbs now and starting to notice the difference. Still got 24lbs to go though

ProfYaffle · 29/04/2009 07:16

By the way, just found this on line, thought it might be useful. I've not looked all the way through it so haven't checked syn values etc.

this weeks password is garlic

Lilyloo · 30/04/2009 13:00

Just worked my way through this thread
I joined SW on Tue but started it on Monday with dp.
I hope to loose about 8lbs but dp has 3 stone of post smoking boredom to loose.

Can i just pick your brains please.

Can you save syns for nights out ?
Our consultant said no but you can use something called 'flexible syns' what's this ?

Also any good sweet snacks low in syns ?
dp into crisps so he on french fries. But i love chocolate or anything sweet.

ProfYaffle · 01/05/2009 06:44

Another pound off this week which is fab as that's 12lbs now but feck me this is slow! I'm really sticking to the plan, doing Success Express 2 days per week, running 3 miles 3 times per week, I make sure I have 3 days per week with no syns, surely the fat should be melting away faster than this?!

LumpyChump · 02/05/2009 06:54

Hi all

Just re-joining thread. This one seems a bit slow, shall we start a new one, maybe with a weight loss table???? I did CD week before last and lost 5lbs, this week, back on SW and lost 4lbs so v.happy with that .

Lily, re. flexible syns, some people count syns as 70 per week (so 10 per day but count them together) and you can save some up, however, SW don't recommend it I don't think, it does work for some though. I like to stick to my 10 per day as it keeps me in check. As for something sweet, well it's finding a low syn treat that you like. I like the half coated chocolate rice cakes by Kallo, really tasty and I think 1.5 syns each.

ProYaffle - 1lb is good but I know what you mean that sometimes it can be slow, have you got much to lose, as it gets slower, the less you have to go?

So 20lbs to shift for me now - must keep going!!!

After a week on CD, I really am appreciating SW. I highly recommend a week of starving to make you appreciate wholesome healthy food .

Good luck for the weekend all x

ProfYaffle · 02/05/2009 07:32

CD = Cambridge Diet? If so I'm in awe, don't think I could do that!

I've got 24lbs to go so similar to you. That's what depresses me so much, at this rate it's going to take 6 months to shift. I've decided to do Weight Watchers for a week and see how I get on. I've done it in the past so I've got all the books etc and know the plan backwards.

I quite like the idea of swapping between the 2, they both have good bits and bad bits. I'm looking forward to having a bit more choice when eating out and having a takeaway tomorrow night - both easier on WW.

Lilyloo - Flexible syns basically means you choose how many syns to have, even if it's 50 in one night, then you stick to that amount. The idea is you stay in control and mentally you're still on plan and it stops you thinking 'fuck it, may as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb' iyswim.

btw - does anyone have any tips for making low fat mashed potato taste nice? I've tried making mine with nat yoghurt but it's a bit insipid.

LumpyChump · 02/05/2009 08:48

Hi Prof, yes CD Cambridge Diet, god, it was really tough. I almost fainted with hunger in the end, but it does work. I was worried I'd pile it all back on straight after but perhaps it kick started my metabolism!! It has really jolted my mind into SW properly though, I was cheating a lot before and just couldn't get into it.....

Good idea alternating WW and SW. I sometimes fancy a Boots or Tesco sarnie or something and think, 'that would only be 2 points on WW, instead of 15 syns or something!'.

How about using a HE or cheese to your mash? Or a few triangles or light laughing cow??

ProfYaffle · 02/05/2009 09:11

I think light laughing cow is the way to go, 6 triangles goes a long way, I could put 4 in the mash and save a couple to go on Ryvita for a snack.

lol @ how we're all so familiar with every dieting system known to man! I know exactly what you mean re the sandwiches etc. I think SW is more sustainable long term, it's a lifestyle whereas WW is a diet. Once I'm at target (in 2020 or something) my plan is to continue on SW EE at home but I think I'm going to have to give myself a leg up with WW to get to target.

ProfYaffle · 02/05/2009 09:14

Well done with CD by the way. I've got a friend who did Lighter Life for 3 months, 3 months without eating! I just can't comprehend what that must be like.

LumpyChump · 02/05/2009 10:03

I know, it's quite sad when you think about it isn't it, all diet experts!

But I guess it's finding what works for you and it'll take a while with there being so many plans around. If you've never dieted before you'd be forgiven for being confused on what to believe I think......

My sister is very fussy with food and has a thyroid problem, she is only now finding that she gets on well with slim fast as she only has to think about one meal a day and is slowly losing weight.

I am very gullible in that I believe any hype surrounding any diet thing, including plans, patches, pills, shakes, supplements, exercise product etc etc!!! It more often that not fails after I've paid a small fortune on whatever it is. Think I'll stick to SW!

SparkyPup · 02/05/2009 22:12

Hi everyone. Have been on and off this thread several times ... first tried SW in 2000 and was delighted with it; both in terms of weight loss and being able to eat loads!! Thought I'd died and gone to Heaven! Fallen off the wagon a few times and climbed back on a few times as well, so here goes again! Although, (ahem! ) I'm sitting here eating a Lindt Lindor chocolate egg as I type this (damn you, Easter leftovers!!!), so perhaps I had better get the books out after this and get back into the right frame of mind before tomorrow morning! Have always found this thread really helpful with tips, advice and recipes, so would be really, really grateful for any support/a*se-kicking which anyone would care to provide!

Lilyloo · 02/05/2009 22:17

Have found mini milk ice lollies 1.5 syns and pink and white mallow biscuits 2.5 syns today. Hoping they will help stave off the sweet tooth attacks.
Find this time of night quite hard when i have used up my syns so may have to go to bed. (or fry up some bacon and eggs )

SparkyPup · 02/05/2009 22:36

Lilyloo, guess what I bought today? Mini Milk ice lollies (ostensibly for dd!) but I bought the Tesco Value ones - 75p for 8 .... seemed like a bargain .... so I'm not sure if they will fall into the 1.5 syns category or not. They are 60 cals each and 2.9g fat. Oh I do hope they are low in syns as mini milks were a childhood fave of mine!

ProfYaffle · 03/05/2009 15:44

Well I'm on day 2 of WW and hating it! I'm hungry and obsessing with food I'm going to try and stick to it for a week with the plan being to re-adjust my expectations on portion sizes iyswim. Can't wait to get back to SW.

On the plus size I did the Race for Life in 35 mins this morning so have earned some extra bonus points and will be having a takeaway and a bottle of wine without going over my limit so life's not all bad

ProfYaffle · 04/05/2009 09:24

Me again with a quick plug for a documentary on bbc1 on Tuesday at 10.35pm which I think looks really interesting:

"Fix my Fat Head. Terrific first person memoir of the workaday reality of a struggle shared by increasing numbers of Britons: obesity. The narrator, journalist and author Hannha Jones, is witty, smart, bracingly honest and commendably aware of the infuriating simplicity of her condition: ie that if you eat too much junk and don't exercise you get fat. What she can't understand is her inability to observe this obviously logical dynamic. She concludes that the reasons must be psychological, and spends six months seeking to vanquish her hungry internal demons. Funny, thoughtful and engaging."

SparkyPup · 04/05/2009 09:55

Thanks for that Prof - Hannah Jones sounds a lot like me! A friend and I have decided that we can let this fatfest continue no longer and are going to try to be mutually supportive as we both try to lose a bit of weight. Can't go to class with her as she works on the SW class night and prefers WW anyway, so we'll each do our own thing and compare notes on weight loss each week. I'll let her know about the programme. Congrats on Race for Life, btw.

AuntieMaggie · 04/05/2009 18:38

Just popping in to say hi.

Congratulations on the race for life profyaffle.

I went to visit family last minute for the weekend so missed WI last week and have been eating absolute rubbish - northern cooking doesn't seem to fit in with SW!

Anyway, determined to stick to it til WI on Thursday!

I don't like the idea of WW profyaffle - can't be good if you're hungry! I know people that have lost weight on it by using all of their daily points on macdonalds or similar and only having one meal per day!!! Not very healthy IMO.

AuntieMaggie · 04/05/2009 18:50

Profyaffle - why are you having 3 days without syns?

Maybe if you had some syns it might speed up your weight loss? Or have you tried writing every single thing you eat and drink down?

I know of someone that was having hidden syns in her drinks up to about 20 syns a day because she had overlooked drinks!

ProfYaffle · 04/05/2009 18:54

Well, I've caved and dumped WW on day 3! I can't quite believe I've stuck to it for 3 months in the past, I'm now convinced that all it's done is contribute to and entrench my eating issues. I've always lost weight easily on it but never maintained, always went slightly nutty when I came off the plan.

Anyhoo, tomorrow is another day and - thank fuck - it's a SW day!

ProfYaffle · 04/05/2009 18:56

AM - Re the syns, I tend to go right up to the 15 syns about 3 times per week (wine!) so try not to have any syns a few days to balance it out.

ConnieComplaint · 04/05/2009 19:05

Have posted on here before, and always follow the thread!

ProfYaffle I think I remember you & sparkler from before when I was one of my other usernames.. really must change back, I still haven't found one which 'fits' me yet!

Have been at SW (this time round) since the end of January & so far have lost 11.5lb. It's going so verrrryyy slllooowww.....

Our consultant isn't that great so I have to be very honest & say that it's this thread & the others in this category which keeps me out of the cupboards at night!! I also like reading the FF thread, though I don't FF, it's a great support!

I get weighed in on a Wednesday evening straight after work, so will post again then. I'll be back later too, just to put my stats up etc...still have a way to go yet before I'm comfortably slim... am in size 16 jeans at the min, tho I got into my 14s on Saturday & did a happy dance...even though an hour later they were cutting the fandango off me!!

Well done on the race for life Prof!! I entered it 3 years ago but my aunt died that weekend & was buried at the exact time the race was starting!

I do spin classes once a week, sometimes twice. I also walk at lunchtimes at work, and have a walking maching (glider thingy) that I try to use too... had a picnic today & a huge ice-cream cone so I'm off to an extra spin class now!!

Post later....hope you don't mind me jumping in like this!!!

virgomaiden · 04/05/2009 20:17

Hi folks - just registered with the site and new to SW too. Had first WI last thursday and lost 4.5lb. Struggling this week to keep hands out the biscuit tin! Any suggestions to hep please anyone. thanks

ConnieComplaint · 04/05/2009 21:32

Hi

JUst back from my spin class.. about to have veg chow mein for dinner, or maybe veg wi boiled rice, bot sure yet - dh is cooking!!

Have you tried just setting a set amount of syns aside each day and 'allow' yourself with a biscuit? but don't go over it? Sometimes when you know you're 'allowed' something, it doesn't seem like such a huge struggle...

Or how about going for low syn biscuits? I don't think rich tea are too bad, though you'd need to check, i'm not much of a biscuit eater, crisps are my downfall!! Pink & white wafers are low syn I think?

I went on a picnic today with dh & the kids (yeah, it was a coolbag job, not a wicker basket for anyone who read that thread ) I did not too bad considering how it could have went!

Not sure what day I had really....

B'fast: Oat So Simple (HEB)

Lunch @ picnic: 2 nimble (HEB) filled with boiled eggs, 1 muller light yoghurt with a mandarin orange popped in it, a handful of dd's doritos & a small whipped ice-cream.

Dinner: (eating whilst typing) mixed veg (brocolli, beansprouts, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, carrots, mushrooms etc) in a chop suey type sauce with boiled rice.

So? What you think? A green day? Suppose it could be EE & I could have had meat with dinner....
