New thread! Other one got a bit long!

OP posts:

Well done! thats loads!! What plan are you following?

I got some Alpen light bars to try and if I like them they might well become my breakfast on days I go straight out. I don't like having cereal as that is then both HE in one meal and as I am EE thats it then!

Anybody know if flapjacks can be included without major syns? I bought some today to go in my labour bag (and I am not caring about SW while in labour!!!) as I thought they woul dbe a good high energy food. But they look really yummy and quite filling! Was wondering if I could have them as a snack without "cheating" on SW?

Is there a way of working out the syn value of general stuff that isn't listed? Like I LOVE chocolate milk and don't mind it taking some of my syns if I get to drink it but no idea how to work it out. There is "drinking chocolate" on the list but that isn't very specific and I am guessing that it varies a lot. I bought some mini Yazoo so that at least if I do have one, it will be a small portion where as if I had bought powder I might be tempted to drink loads!

Also I have to drink orange juice with my iron liquid stuff because I am desperatly trying to get my iron levels up before I can't go to the birthing centre. How do I know the syns in that?

Sorry to ask so many questions! I will eventually be going to a group once baby is born but don't feel I can justify the money when 36 weeks pregnant!

Have just had steak and veg for dinner - I am right in thinking this is all free on EE? I didn't actually eat much as I am not keen on steak but DH loves it and I need iron!! Lol.

Any ideas on what I can make with spinach? Lol. I ordered some and thought I had ordered fresh but it was frozen! Thats what happens when you do online shopping with tirdness! I love spinach and recotta (sorry spelling awful and too tired to sort it out!) cannalonni but a) wouldn't have a clue how to make and b) I am guessing it would have lots of syns?

One thing I have been doing is snacking on sugarsnap peas! They are actually really nice and they are speed foods. Maybe even superspeed? DD loves them too (15 months). They are 2 for £2 in tesco and I can quite easily get through a pack with DD!!

Are dried fruit free?

ProfYaffle · 27/03/2009 07:08

Deemented - 12lbs! Well done.

Soon2be - don't know about flapjacks, I imagine they're quite high in syns tbh, what with the oats, syrup, butter etc.

This month's sw magazing has a recipe for spinach and ricotta pasta sauce, if you're interested I'll post it.

Steak and veg - free on ee. Orange juice - I really wouldn't worry about it in your shoes, you need it to be healthy so drink it, it's not like you're eating pure lard is it??

Had a look in my syns book but couldn't find Yazoo - sorry! And as far as I know, all dried fruit has syns.

soon2befamilyof4 · 27/03/2009 10:54

Thanks proyaffle. Is there a new mag out then? The one I have is the one with the fish and chips etc in? If there is, I will get one today. I found the last one extremely helpful.

nikkid21 · 27/03/2009 11:42

well done demented

soon 2 be

Yazoo (all flavours, all sw plans) 200ml bottle is 7 syns, 500ml bottle 17 1/2 syns.

Orange juice - fresh squeezed 142ml is 2 1/2 syns, from concentrate 2 1/2 syns per 28ml. So 28 syns for a 280ml glass

Dried fruit isn't free but you can have it as a healthy b choice on both plans. ie 71g dried apricots, 42g dried aplle, 57g dried figs, peaches or pairs. No mention of raisin or sultanas so you would have to syn those.

A mcvities 71g flapjack is 17 syns, a tiny 35g one is 7 syns.

hope that helps

niki

soon2befamilyof4 · 27/03/2009 12:16

Oh my god! !

Now I know why I put on so much weight before anyway!

ProfYaffle · 27/03/2009 12:17

The recipe is in the May/June issue, I've got a subscription and it arrived yesterday, so should be in the shops soon.

ProfYaffle · 27/03/2009 12:36

By the way, I'm thinking of buying some of the SW cook books and wondered if anyone could give me an opinion on:

One pot Wonders
Simply Summer
100 Comfort Foods
100 Saucey secrets

I've got 50 free foods, 100 original and 100 green recipes. I was quite disappointed with the original book, compared to the magazine recipes it's rather basic and some were just plain odd (mince with cottage cheese on top? ) The other 2 not so bad but still not as good as the magazine.

I'm doing sw at home as I can't get to meetings so I buy them from the website and can't browse before I buy. Therefore would appreciate some advice before I shell out even more money!

soon2befamilyof4 · 28/03/2009 15:42

Profyaffle - Sorry I can't really help with the cookbooks but I wondered if you could help me. Did you say you have subscribed to the mag? I want to do it but have only had the mag once so far and the joining "gift" didn't appeal to me. Do you know if it is the same gift every time? If it is then I will just go for it now as I still want the mag without it. But if it is different each month I might wait till it is something I want and get it from the shop for now? I have only had one mag but it is very well used, I found it really helpful and the recipes are great. It is looking very tatty now!

Got mince to use up tonight and just trying to decide what to do with it. Has anybody had it in a pasta bake type thing? Pizza hut do a pasta dish that has mince meat in with a tomatoey sauce and cheese on top and DH and I love it so was thinking about trying to create a healthy version? But not sure how to do it.

ProfYaffle · 29/03/2009 07:34

I got my subscription as part of the package when I joined the 'SW at home' thing, so don't really know about the gifts - Sorry.

Re the pasta, it sounds like a baked version of spag bol. Could you make a spag bol sauce, mix with cooked pasta, put in a dish with cheese on top and bake for a bit??

I did Nikkid's chicken in bacon the other night. I did it with leeks, poached them in vecon then mixed stilton through them just before serving. It was gorgeous, will become a SW favourite in our house along with cheeseburgers.

soon2befamilyof4 · 29/03/2009 15:50

I don't really want it to taste the same as spag bol really because the idea was to have something a bit different really. We had it last night and used a homepride creamy tomato and bacon sauce and it was yummy, but I know this isn't SW style! (I am only really just doing SW to get the hang of it at the mo ready to start strictly when baby is born anytime from now to the next few weeks). So I want to experiment really and find something we like. Or any pasta bake really - even with no mince and doesn't need to be tomatoey. Pasta bake is the one thing I have always made with a jar.

I am packing some snacks for my labour bag. I don't really care about breaking the SW diet during labour as obviously it is a one off and hard enough as it is, but wondered if anybody had any idea of any good snacks I could pack? If they are healthy it is a bonus really but mainly want something high energy and easy to eat. Long shot but thought I would ask here incase anybody had any great ideas!

nikkid21 · 29/03/2009 16:41

Not sw friendly but during my first labour I went through 2 whole packs of chocolate digestives. It did last 24 hours though. Second time around was only 25mins after I got into hospital so didn't have a need to eat.

You may want to pack something substantial for after the birth too. Both times I was starving and the two slices of toast and cup of tea that the hospital gave me didn't even touch the sides. I could have eaten a whole loaf to be honest.

On the sw website recipe section there is one for a chickens & bacon pasta bake, a macaroni cheese bake. Below is the tomato free pasta bake

Syns per serving:
7 Syns on Original, Green and Extra Easy

Ingredients
295g can of Batchelors Low Fat condensed mushroom soup
onions
mushrooms

Method
Cook any variety of pasta in the normal way. Place in baking dish. Place soup in a pan; bring to the boil, adding the onions and mushrooms. Pour over the pasta, and cook in the oven at 200°C/400°F/ Gas 6 for 15-20 minutes.

soon2befamilyof4 · 29/03/2009 18:55

That does sound yummy. Shame it is so many syns! I guess that comes from the mushroom soup?

applepudding · 30/03/2009 16:41

Have you tried the bachelors pasta n sauce meals? You just add water and some of these come in creamy type sauces. You would need a couple of packs (at least!) for your family but you can add extra veg to it (green) or some chicken/bacon as HE (green) or on EE.

Well I eventually weighed myself at the end of last week and had lost another lb (making 8lb in 8 weeks so not as good as some but in the right direction!). However since then have not had a very slimming friendly weekend - night out on Friday, hangover munchies on Sat and such a bad day yesterday that I was beyond caring!!

Back on the straight and narrow today - got a chicken roasting in the oven and will do some boiled pots and veges with it. I can smell it now and I'm starving - will go and put the potatoes on!

lunavix · 31/03/2009 15:57

I have a SW spinach and ricotta canelloni recipe somewhere.. it was either free or very low syns

lunavix · 31/03/2009 16:00

Ceolas - I found I only like quorn bangers, the rest not so keen

Pwsimerimew · 31/03/2009 16:08

Ssh! You're making me hungry. SW person here, have lost 9 1/2 pounds, need to loose another two and a half stone. I've no motivation. Trying the Fast Track this week to give my weight loss a boost.

ProfYaffle · 31/03/2009 16:11

What's Fast track?

Pwsimerimew · 31/03/2009 19:41

They don't tell you much about it - it's top secret! It's like WW, they tell you how many points you get and then you choose from quite a limited list what to eat for the day. I like it cause you can have a ready meal under 350 cals, and sometimes its just handy! (lazy cook). Very limiting though, not like the SW we all know and love.
Today I've had a mullerlight and an apple for breakfast. 2 slices WW bread and some chicken and lo-fat mayo for lunch, WW ready meal and measured amonut of carrots for dinner, and I've enough points left for 2 more slices of bread and 4oz of beans for my supper if I'm still hungry. Before you ask - I can't follow WW thats why I'm doing SW, this fast track is only acting like a kick up the backside for me.

slowreadingprogress · 31/03/2009 20:28

hello!

I am doing SW on-line and am nervous as it's my first weigh in tomorrow!!!!

So far, have been impressed with how easy it's been - but then again, if I lose not one pound tomorrow I'll know it's been a bit TOO easy and I've been going wrong somewhere..........

What's a good weight loss for the first week? Am hoping for a couple of pounds off...

applepudding · 31/03/2009 21:43

slow reading: Most people find that their weight loss is more over the first week or so.

However, what that is depends very much on how much you have to lose in the first place.

Even if you only lose a small amount, if you can keep on doing it and you are not finding SW difficult (e.g. you are eating plenty and not bored with it) then you will lose what you need to eventually.

Look forward to hearing how it goes.

PWsimerimew - so how did you get to hear about fast track? I've known about SW for about 5 years, and the various things like success express but I've never heard of it. Is it a WW plan rather than SW?

Pwsimerimew · 31/03/2009 22:17

A friend of mine who goes to a different group told me about it. She was stuck after loosing 3 stone, and wasn't going anywhere. I have no idea why they keep it hush hush - maybe because its too much like WW. They want food optimising to be a way of life rather than a diet don't they, and the fast track is quite restricting. I bet your consultant will have it somewhere in the back of her file......

kid · 31/03/2009 22:21

I lost 3lb this week. No idea how as I didn't stop eating all the wrong foods! I'm not complaining though

ProfYaffle · 01/04/2009 07:24

Am quite intrigued by the Fast Track thing! Don't think I could follow it as it sounds too diet like for me but the idea of a Sw secret society is quite entertaining

MoreThanChocolate · 01/04/2009 13:40

Hi folks

Hope you don't mind me picking your brains as I'm new to SW - and loving it btw - what a revalation after years and years of ww on and off

anyway my question is about syns

i have been faithfully plugging in nutrtional info to the lifeline site to work out syn values (chocolate ice cream today which DH insited on bringing from Asda yesterday and is calling me from the freezer!)

I found when I filled in the boxes I got the same value syns whether I put zero fat or the actual fat per 100 gms - in this case 3.4.

This got me thinking and testing out a theory and it seems that whether the item is high fat/protein/carbs or not the syns come out the same if the calories are the same. Therefore is it the case that a syn just = approx 20 calories??????

DH says I should appologise in advance for my analytical question!

TIA

nikkid21 · 01/04/2009 14:52

I've noticed that too - a syn does seem to be around 20 cals no matter what the nutritional content.

I don't think that it matters too much as syns are supposed to be the nutritionally rubbish sweets, biscuits and booze anyway (at least that's all I use my syns for )

Well done kid - 3lb is a fab loss. I really want to lose 2lb tomorrow so that I'm back in target range and don't have to pay any more.
