Why are you not taking WLI?

First of all I do not look down on WLI. In fact I possibly regret not going on them as my weight loss has been very very slow (50 pounds in 18 months). With plenty of step backs after holidays, Christmas etc. I must have lost the same 7 pounds at least three times.

But I chose not to go on them as I have had horrific gallstones ever since my last pregnancy and just could not risk it after they finally went away.

My cravings have definitely reduced since I have made diet and lifestyle changes. Was living off and craving pasta before my weight loss journey. And now I can definitely take it or leave it.

Just curious to hear why you didn’t go down the WLI route?

You're reading too much into that poster's single sentence reply. It wasn't goady at all. And why can't she answer? I don't have step-children, but does that mean I can't offer an opinion or answer a question posed on the step families board?

She didn't offer an opinion, though. She just said "Because I'm thin". It would be like you going onto the step-parenting thread and answering any question with the one-liner "I don't have stepchildren" - would you do that?

I have invested money into eating better and a whole array of exercise related things, as well as WLI. I realise not everyone can afford to, and choices have to be made, but I always feel it important to remind readers that WLI can be used with healthy eating and exercise.

Yes I could have spent money on fitness/diet as well as WLI if I wanted to.

However while I am happy at the money I’ve spent on the former, I just wasn’t interested in or willing to spend money on WLI.

As a fairly health eater now I think I spend less now, since I cut back drastically on the takeaways although my weekly food bill is higher.

So actually I’m probably financially better off all around the way I’ve done it :D

*I am wary of taking a drug that slows down the transit of food through my stomach and gut.

*doctors previously advised me that taking Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) long term was absolutely fine with few side effects and that turns out not to be true at all

* cost

Had an eating disorder years ago and, rightly, providers won't prescribe to anyone with an ED history.

My friend has an ED and lied to get them and injected them all on the same night, she says they are rife in the ED community.

Oh, goodness - was she OK after doing that? I hope she's getting help for her ED.

Because I’m thin

Doesn't stop Sharon Osborne or Katie Price from taking them..

That's so grim. Why would she risk her health – both physical and mental – like that?

Because that’s what eating disorders do to people?

WalterMittysPuppet · 16/01/2026 20:58

I'm obese with a BMI of 39, and I feel very envious of the weight dropping off all the obese people who have gone the WLI route, however:

  1. I have no gallbladder (from yo-yo dieting my whole life) and
  2. Already have slow motility/intestinal dysmotility (and take PPI's)
  3. I am emetophobic (and still haunted by the sulphuric burps from my gallstone issues) so the side effects scare me.

I'm gutted but I just don't think they're for me. I don't have food noise as such - I eat chocolate to disassociate!

Pasta4Dinner · 16/01/2026 20:59

I go to the gym to build muscle, I don’t want to take something that might make me lose that instead of fat.
Ive read about all the digestive issues and I’m not taking anything which messes with that.

I know. I have a history of ED. It was a rhetorical question.

Really?

I probably need to work on my comprehension.

Oh, goodness - was she OK after doing that? I hope she's getting help for her ED.

She collapsed with kidney pain and has ongoing issues with them now, this triggered the doctors putting her on an intense program which was working for a while but she is relapsing. It’s sad to see as she loves her kids and wants to stay around for them, she is a very intelligent woman but it’s always had a grip on her. I’m just glad the rules for prescribing are getting stricter.

Yeah I didn’t see the rhetorical bit either..

Ooodelally · 16/01/2026 21:23

I don’t like how it has affected the faces of the people I know taking it. Actually, it’s the women, the men look ok but of the women I know on it there’s a definite “look” to their face which comes over as a bit uncanny valley…

socks1107 · 16/01/2026 21:32

I didn’t want the side effects.
i didn’t want my hair to fall out.
The cost and the what do I do after I’ve lost the weight to maintain it?

CocoKimoo · 16/01/2026 21:36
  • the cost
  • scared to inject myself
  • not keen to have any medications that I don't 'really' need
  • not convinced that that alone would stop my emotional eating tendancies so it might all be a waste

If it’s the women more than men, it might be with the Botox/filler that they look like that?

TheNaughtyDaughter · 16/01/2026 21:45

I’ve lost 2.5 stones just by eating healthily and working out a lot.

I am very sceptical about medicine, vaccines, vitamins and anything I think is not healthy so I suppose the thought of injecting myself to get thin was a none starter. I just couldn’t mess with my system like that. I’d be too scared of the side effects.

I’m quite a disciplined person. I was overweight but I got it off quickly and easily.

saminamama · 16/01/2026 21:50

Breastfeeding so can’t

HotTiredDog · 16/01/2026 21:54

Because I don’t want to rely on them for something I could do myself.
Also because they have a high chance of interfering with the medication that keeps me alive.

LimeGoose · 16/01/2026 21:58

My mum died young of pancreatic cancer and I’m scared to take a drug that increases my risk of pancreatitis and other pancreatic issues.

BootsandCatss · 16/01/2026 21:58

I couldn’t inject myself for million quid! I pass out just looking at needles 🥲 the cost is another massive factor, the unknown long term effects and seeing once people stop they regain the weight.

Once I put my mind to it I managed to lose 98lb in just over a year, maintained since the beginning of last year give or take a few lbs.

countdowntonap · 16/01/2026 22:00

-focused on building and sculpting a body shape that requires a nutrient dense diet to grow optimally
-don’t need help with discipline when it comes to food

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 16/01/2026 22:15

Can't afford it (I wouldn't save all the money on food shopping; I'd still be spending the same amount for DH and DD).

I am trying to get my epilepsy under control and can't take anything that may affect how the body processes medication.
