Why are you not taking WLI?

First of all I do not look down on WLI. In fact I possibly regret not going on them as my weight loss has been very very slow (50 pounds in 18 months). With plenty of step backs after holidays, Christmas etc. I must have lost the same 7 pounds at least three times.

But I chose not to go on them as I have had horrific gallstones ever since my last pregnancy and just could not risk it after they finally went away.

My cravings have definitely reduced since I have made diet and lifestyle changes. Was living off and craving pasta before my weight loss journey. And now I can definitely take it or leave it.

Just curious to hear why you didn’t go down the WLI route?

I'm surprised that there's not been anyone on here yet saying 'Because it's cheating/it's a lazy way to lose weight'. As a user myself,I certainly don't think this, but I've heard it so many times!

Dreamingofdaffodils · 16/01/2026 17:01

I need to lose weight but have no other health conditions so the risks aren’t worth the benefits for me.

The biggest risk for me is that they can cause frailty in later life, as rapid weight loss can cut muscle by 30% and I’m at an age where I can’t afford to lose that. If you then put back on any weight, you end up fatter than ever.

I’m losing the weight more slowly through diet and exercise.

sonjadog · 16/01/2026 17:09

I am losing weight through diet and exercise. I calorie count every day and try to make sure there is more going out than going in. It is going fine and my progress is slow but steady. As I am gradually reducing the amount of calories I need as my weight goes down, I think I am more likely to sustain the lifestyle changes.

I am not interested in the injections because 1. cost 2. "Food noise" is not my issue, which seems to be one the key things the injections help with 3. I generally prefer not to take medication unless I have to, and this is not a "have to" moment 4. I am more focused on lifestyle changes than weight loss.

I wonder a lot about your point 2 too.

Is it worth trying them if “food noise” isn’t an issue? Can they still help?

SilenceInside · 16/01/2026 17:29

@FlatWhiteExtraHot yes they will still work, they work for the majority of people who take them. They act on your feelings of hunger, make you feel fuller quicker and for longer which means you eat less. The reduction in food noise is something that can go alongside that, probably due to stable blood sugar levels and the reduction in hunger.

Because I’m thin

Why are you in 'weight loss' chat if you're thin, out of interest - or do you mean you have lost weight previously?

It's not invitation only, but if you're thin and have never needed to lose weight, it's a bit goady and smug to come into threads in 'weight loss chat' proclaiming your thinness to people who struggle with their weight.

Had an eating disorder years ago and, rightly, providers won't prescribe to anyone with an ED history.

NonComm · 16/01/2026 19:14

@Herewegoagainandagainandagain

‘Your eye consultants opinion is an opinion in a field they are not specialists in.’

I’m going to side with my eye consultant the eye specialist who is seeing a marked increase in eye problems from these drugs. As I said, she is also very concerned about the lack of long term research, including on eye conditions. I agree that people can measure their own risks, but I would not risk my eyesight.

But it's a pointless answer in the context of a specialist forum. It would be like me answering a thread in The Doghouse saying 'Do you have a retractable lead?' 'No, because I haven't got a dog' or in 'Breastfeeding' if I answered 'Why don't you breastfeed' with 'Because I haven't got a baby.'

But with added goadiness in your case because most people who have a dog or a baby want a dog or a baby, whereas people who are overweight posting in Weightloss Chat clearly don't want to be overweight,

Danikm151 · 16/01/2026 19:17

I can’t afford it simple as that.

MrsAvocet · 16/01/2026 19:24

My BMI is no longer high enough to qualify as I am successfully losing weight through calorie counting at the moment, albeit slowly. I was tempted, but put off by the fact that I have several friends who have lost weight on the injections but they have all put it all back on quite quickly after stopping. It's looking increasingly like it's going to be necessary for many people to stay on them long term for real benefit. I'm not really comfortable with the idea of being life long medication unless it's really essential. I think if I was very overweight and unable to lose by other means or had health issues that meant I needed to lose weight quickly then I probably would get injections. But the amount of weight I have to lose is not huge and should be achievable by conventional methods. I think I am more likely to keep it off long term by tackling the problem areas with my eating habits in the traditional way. I'm not opposed to the injections and definitely think they have their place but I don't think they're the answer for everyone.

PurplePotatoes · 16/01/2026 19:24

Can’t afford it and unknown long term side effects mainly.
Also will it just be another yoyo diet (of which I’ve done a few!) My friend lost 5 stone with MJ, it got too expensive so she stopped a few months ago and has already put a stone back on…

TheExistentialistCafé · 16/01/2026 19:26

Because when you stop, you gain back the weight four times faster than non WLI weight loss. You also lose more bones and muscles, but will gain back fat.;

Piglet89 · 16/01/2026 19:26

I read an article whereby two women who took them
piled weight back in the moment they stopped.

That, and potential side effects. I’m 3 days into OMAD and it’s not too bad. About 21 pounds to lose.

ThatCyanCat · 16/01/2026 19:33

Because I'm already so incredibly thin and gorgeous and eat like a bird.

<<hoiks arse off the floor, gathers it into arms and drapes it over the arm of the sofa so I can sit down with a tureen of popcorn>>

Beekman · 16/01/2026 19:37

I’m waiting to see how the pills are tolerated by people (they just came out this month here in the US) then I may give them a go. I lost a lot of weight without help but cannot get this last 40lbs off so it would be great if the tablets could help with that.

BCBird · 16/01/2026 19:40

I would qualify but don't want to lose my love of good

Insuranceisascam · 16/01/2026 19:51

Potential side effects - I seem to be quite sensitive to medication. And a worry that I’d need to remain on it forever. I have veeery slowly brought my weight down from 81Kg in 2021 to 63Kg now.

My BMI is now 25.5. Aiming to get down to 60Kg - nearly there!

Costs - I could afford it but would rather invest that money into eating better or buying things like a new pairs of trainers or fitness equipment.

Personal satisfaction and stubbornness - I’ve felt controlled by sugar cravings and binge eating. So breaking the control food has had over me without relying on medication has been rewarding. My ability to (mostly) overcome this has boosted my confidence and trust in myself.

I’ve learnt so much about emotional eating, nutrition and what works for my body on this journey.

As long as it’s taken me to do it this way, I have no regrets about not taking WLI.

I have invested money into eating better and a whole array of exercise related things, as well as WLI. I realise not everyone can afford to, and choices have to be made, but I always feel it important to remind readers that WLI can be used with healthy eating and exercise.

You're reading too much into that poster's single sentence reply. It wasn't goady at all. And why can't she answer? I don't have step-children, but does that mean I can't offer an opinion or answer a question posed on the step families board?
