How about losing one stone by Christmas 🌲

Clitmandu · 14/09/2025 08:22

There are 14 weeks until Christmas. I’m thinking just one pound a week would crack a stone off and make a big difference.

One pound a week is doable and not too much pressure.

I am starting today, my plan is to stop being so bloody greedy and stop the mindless all day long scoffing.

Weigh in every Sunday.

Am off to dust off the scales and weigh myself, I will report back !

Would love some company.

We’re a week in, and 13 weeks until Christmas! How’s it going for everyone?
I’m at 73.7kg down from 74.1, slow progress but… progress!

That's about a lb in old money so I think you're perfectly on track @CautiousOptimist

I will post where I am on Mondays as that's when I bit the bullet.

AreYouBrandNew · 25/09/2025 09:55

@CautiousOptimist well done!

so far ok - I’m at 13 st 8 this week. So glad to have put some distance in from my brush with 14st.

Yesterday was tough, was so tired for some reason.. just wanted sugar sugar sugar or cereal. But fought it off. Got to do it this time. You are all helping so thank you!

AreYouBrandNew · 25/09/2025 09:57

@NotnowMavis how was Pilates?

I find even if you technically have time to exercise, summoning the energy can be hard. Got to try though.

AreYouBrandNew · 25/09/2025 09:58

@CautiousOptimist i mostly ignore the decimals so it’s a kg in my world!

Hi. I'd like to join in please for accountability and motivation. Late sixties, 5'4", lifelong yoyo dieter and exercise avoider. Tried many diets and succeeded with a few, but always succumbed to my love for sweets and wine. This time last year I was told off by a doctor for gaining 4 stones since I'd last been seen (six years previously, and advised to change diet and lifestyle. I have a fatty liver, and poor cholesterol and really need to deal with both.
Started the new year at 14st 8lb. Lost 16lb in the first month, then fell off the wagon. Have started again many times since. Began again 6 days ago at 14st 1.6lb. I'm doing what I did in January - cut out alcohol - I admit I have a problem with it. I also cut sugar except for fruit, and bad fats, and am reducing carbs. I'm trying to eat only if I'm properly hungry and be mindful what I eat.
I've got the Better Me app and am doing a 28 day pilates challenge with that - currently 15-20 mins daily. I've got a treadmill, exercise bike and a weights machine in the garage, a testament to how many times I've tried to find an exercise I would love, so I've got no excuses really. I'm planning on a gradual increase in activities till I'm fit enough to join DH who is a keen walker.
A week ago I pledged in front of family that I'd lose a stone by Christmas, which felt doable, and so far so good, though I've had to make myself do the pilates a couple of times. I always feel better afterwards.
I've also got some pretty good extra motivation now, as my daughter, after years on the infertility rollercoaster, is expecting a baby in the spring. The other grandma is a lovely slim woman, and I'm determined not to be Fat Nan! šŸ˜…
Sorry this is long - I'm not known for my brevity! Anyway, 1st weigh in is tomorrow. I'm feeling optimistic. šŸ’Ŗ

Sounds like you’ve got loads of great stuff going on in your life! Personally, I need to see results from exercise and that can take a while but once I see things happening, I’m more motivated. I’ve always been super active and healthy and even I need motivation sometimes and it’s hard to get into a groove, so stick with it. Also, addiction to sugar is really, really hard to crack. The thing I’d say about alcohol is that I become ā€œshoddyā€ once I’ve had a drink and far more likely to make silly decision! See you at weigh in.

NotnowMavis · 25/09/2025 14:30

@TeelaLorenCarver dont apologise for not being brief, personally I love to read other peoples’ histories of their relationship with food and exercise - I find it really helps me not feel so alone.
Pilates was great, @AreYouBrandNew . Really enjoyed it. I was pretty poor though- it doesn’t take long to lose fitness and it must be a year since I was going regularly.
Im weighing in on Saturday, not Sunday, as going away for a city break on Sunday. I’m going to try and be careful whilst away, without being an annoying party pooper. My problem is not food so much, because I’m very lucky in that I genuinely like salads and vegetables and can take or leave chocolate and sweets; it’s alcohol. I’m terrible at moderation so I’m just trying to avoid it. And like @ClaredeBear says, as soon as I drink my decision making is wrecked and that’s when the crisp consumption starts …..

Well done, that is a great start. I've fallen at the first hurdle, but a better start today with a longer dog walk and some weight training. Have not had breakfast yet, will wait until lunchtime.

Alioopsidaisy · 26/09/2025 10:50

That's a brilliant start! Would love to have done as well when I weigh tomorrow. Fingers crossed

deeahgwitch · 26/09/2025 11:11

Because of this thread I actually passed on a delicious desert last night.
I also didn’t buy a gorgeous cake yesterday in a local bakery.
I’m hoping to stay strong. šŸ˜€

Alioopsidaisy · 26/09/2025 11:35

Ong that’s amazing! I dont think I will have e lost this first week, so I need this kind of inspiration!

QforCucumber · 26/09/2025 12:11

That's with a bottle of wine last friday and homemade pizzas midweek too!

I've started Caroline Girvan Iron series on youtube and finding the weight lifting so much more productive than just calorie controlling, I'm loosely following WW to keep myself accountable but figure If I can increase my muscle mass I'll burn more at rest hah!

Well chuffed, 4 weeks and 2 days to holiday, aim still 12st 4 or under before we fly.

AreYouBrandNew · 26/09/2025 19:41

@QforCucumber well done, great start and not too far to next milestone

@deeahgwitch good news that you stayed on track

good luck to everyone weighing over the weekend and/or enjoying socials while trying to stay mindful of plan

NotnowMavis · 27/09/2025 07:13

Right, just done the weigh in. I’m 8stone 9 lb.
Which probably doesn’t sound a lot, except I’m a shortarse with tiny hands and feet and this time last year I was 7 stone 9 lb…..
I had a glass of wine last night and managed not to fall headfirst into a packet of crisps, so that’s a win.
I’m thinking of trying to find my Jillian Michaels CD again. But I had a hip replacement the year before last so I’m a bit worried about all the jumping.

Midlifeshenanigans · 27/09/2025 07:28

Seem to have managed to but on 0.7kg this week. I knew it hadn’t been a perfect week but didn’t expect to gain. Think I need to go back to the drawing board 😟

I’m weighing in tomorrow, which is a day early as I didn’t weigh in until Monday, and I’m full expecting to have maintained or gained but I’m going to try not to be discouraged as I’ve started some good habits and tried to set myself up for success. Easier said than done, but I hear people often don’t lose in the first week anyway - is this true?

Alioopsidaisy · 27/09/2025 09:05

I weighed and put a pound on! so disheartened. I kept under 1000 cals. No alcohol (I usually have wine every night), and ran 3 times. Not far but at least I went. Menopause is an absolute b**ch! 14 šŸ˜”

TeelaLorenCarver · 27/09/2025 09:19

Weighed in yesterday, and lost 5.2lb, which is a good first week loss for me, so pretty pleased. DH will be out with walking groups both days this weekend, so I'll be enjoying having the house to myself, with a trip to the hairdresser as a treat. I did slip up with cava and sweets yesterday, but didn't drink the whole bottle, and only bought 1 pack of sweets, which is progress for me. It hasn't derailed me and my mind is still in the zone, and I'm determined to be stronger this next week. So, I'll get off of MN and get on with some exercise. Hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend. We can do this.

Hope pilates went well @NotnowMavis

I enjoy exercise, it's the food intake I struggle with. I walk every day, row 3x a week. I have programmed myself into doing this as standard.

There's just so much information out there, I don't know what to do with it. I just listened to one of Dr Rangan Chatterjee's podcast episodes with a menopause exercise specialist who says perimenopausal women shouldn't do long workouts and should do HIIT or SIT and shouldn't do "eat less, move more", instead we should eat more and lift heavy and move more but faster. And no fasting. And walking doesn't do enough for us.

But others say we should fast. And lift heavy. And walk. And have a calorie deficit of 500 calories, or 200 calories.

So much information, I get overwhelmed trying to figure it out.

For now I will keep going with what I'm doing and tweak if I need to.

It's a minefield knowing what to do for the best. I listen to lots of podcasts and they all say conflicting things especially for women šŸ™ˆ seems straightforward if you're a man šŸ™„

MightyGoldBear · 27/09/2025 09:37

I started at 11.9 in June got down to 11.3 in July then had August off to survive the school holidays 🫠 went back up to 11.6 but starting again since September I'm now 11.4 so trying to lose a pound a week. I will be very happy to see 10 back on the scales šŸ¤žšŸ»šŸ¤žšŸ»šŸ¤žšŸ»
My period is the hardest bit each month for me though so that might makes things slower going.

Well done everyone šŸ‘ it's tough going sticking with it.

NotnowMavis · 27/09/2025 10:41

A lb a week would suit me just fine, @MightyGoldBear .

MiddlingMarch · 27/09/2025 10:46

87kg today, not "official" weight in, that is tomorrow, but wanted to check after a big 5 course meal out with friends yesterday. Long planned, and enjoyed it. First dessert in a week.

Am not missing the biscuits or sweets as much as I thought I would. It's more the habit of having something with a cup of coffee mid (and also late) afternoon. Think I will have fruit tea after the coffee to break that habit more fully.

Anyway, unofficially 1.5kg down.
