5 stone to lose - Anyhow that works for you - thread 3

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 08/05/2024 09:10

If you have (or had) more than 5 stone to lose and plan on doing so over many months in a reasonably sustainable way and would like to hang out with a supportive crowd this could well be the thread for you.

I took the title of the thread based on the previous threads some of us were on which turned out to be lovely supportive threads. With a mild edit to clarify no I'm not guaranteeing everyone will lose 5 stone in 6 months.

Super happy for anyone who likes the sound of this to join us. Weigh ins have typically been once a week on Monday. I generally prefer working in kilos because the maths is nice but stones are also perfectly fine.

General medical advice for most people is to aim to lose 1 - 2 pounds a week, or somewhere between 0.5 - 1kg. If you've quite a lot to lose a kilo (2.2lb) a week is perfectly healthy and sensible amount to aim for. That is a 1000 kcal deficit a day. = 26kg (4 stone in 6 months). This is clearly a VERY ask if your total daily energy expenditure is 2600 kcal than if it is 1600 kcal. This advice does rise up to 2-3 pounds a week or 1.5kg a week if you have a high BMI, (so e.g. the person below has an estimated total daily energy expenditure of 2591 so could quite sensibly aim to eat 1340 kcal a day) but do get medical advice if you aren't sure what a good target for you is.

Absolutely no pressure on anyone as to how fast you should be aiming to lose weight. I would like the priority always to be getting healthier bodies and healthier habits.

you can calculate your total daily energy expenditure with a site like this one

https://tdeecalculator.net/result.php?s=metric&g=female&age=49&kg=124&cm=168&act=1.375&f=1

A 49 year old female who is 124kg needs an estimated 2,591 calories per day

Well done all. Consistent small losses are the way to go. Deep down everyone wants overnight success, but slow and steady is where it's at really.

I've listened to 2lb this week, so I'm at 18st 13lb.

Glad to be 'back' in the 18s.

I'm starting to see the downside of weight loss in my skin... my neck especially isn't holding up. Trying not to worry too much...

phonetedt · 20/05/2024 21:49

Hi everyone I'm new

5"2, TDEE suggests 1950 a day (before deficit), weight 15st 5. Goal weight 12 stone and then we'll see

I have lost 16lb since January but I haven't really dieted the whole way through,

Just started at the gym.

How long until you can see a difference? I can't see any difference at all yet and neither can anyone else which is really disheartening

Also worried my boobs will shrink. When I was slim they were a D, they're now an F, don't want them to shrink too much. It's the only thing that gives me confidence at the moment!

HippyChickMama · 21/05/2024 07:43

Well done on all the losses 👏🏻
I found that my weight loss had slowed right down, despite still having around 4st to lose, so I've upped my exercise and it seems to be working. This week I did:
3 x C25K runs (week 3, and I run v slowly)
30 minutes of swimming (600m)
A 7K hike (slowly)
Am planning to drop some yoga in to that on the other days too, I know it doesn't burn calories but my motivation for losing weight isn't how I look, I want to be strong and fit and yoga helps protect from injury during the other exercise. I will be going back to martial arts once my elbow is better too (tennis elbow atm).
SW: 17st 12
CW: 14st 11
Next goal: 14st 7 (50% of weight loss)
TW: 10st 7 - 11st

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 21/05/2024 11:05

Hi there @phonetedt on the basis of you telling I find the first thing you notice is clothes fitting you better so you look better in your clothes even if the difference of why you look good today is hard for other people to put their finger on.

Once your old clothes are much too big and you treat yourself to new ones people definitely start to comment that you're looking good.

Second weigh in and lost a lb! I was at a wedding this weekend where a fair amount of alcohol and food was consumed, so more than happy with that! I was able to enjoy myself and got straight back on my calorie deficit the next day, that in itself is an achievement for me, normally it would set me off for a good while.

SW: 252lbs
CW: 246lbs

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 21/05/2024 16:58

fabulous work @positivevibesonlyx the ability to have a lovely day off enjoy your social event not freak out and just get on with creating that deficit again the next day is so useful.

I messed up yesterday. Had a cheese sandwich at about 8pm followed by two bars of chocolate and I'd already had 3 strawberry mouses.

Forced myself to the gym to make up for it. Probably burnt the chocolate off.

Funny story, my old boss started to go to my gym a year or two ago. I stopped working for her in 2015 and it still fills me with fury to see her. She gave me a written warning for something - a colleague was continually messaging me on my personal phone and I asked him to stop. He said if he couldn't talk to me personally, he wouldn't be talking to me about work. Our departments crossed and we had to talk so it was silly. Her boss told him off for that but then when another person started on his team, he said not to talk to me as I was a man eater. I had a boyfriend of about 7/8 years at that point and a baby of 4 and there was never anything like that between us which I think was his issue. I complained that he said that and she gave me a warning but not him. I'm so tempted to change gyms but I'd either have to pay £1/2 extra a month and drive further or join my local virgin gym which opens a lot later and is about 6 x the price.

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 22/05/2024 09:38

It's unbelievably annoying when bosses treat the problem as 'a women is complaining' rather than 'a man is harassing'

I wonder how many years it will take for me to be less fuming or not fuming at all 😂

GameOfJones · 22/05/2024 10:38

Hello all, please could I join? I have been trying to lose weight since the start of the year but haven't been consistent so my progress has been extremely slow.

SW: 15st 1lb
CW: 14st 7lbs
GW: Mini goal for now of getting out of the obese BMI range and into the overweight category.

I'm planning on weighing on Fridays and generally my food plan is no mid week snacking and two sensible meals a day as I'm never bothered about eating breakfast.

I know I can do it if I apply myself, I just struggle with being consistent so I'm hoping posting on here will keep me accountable.

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 22/05/2024 18:20

Sure @GameOfJones more the merrier - come hang out with us

I think you go longer between being cross as time goes by but every now and again something pushes your button and you get just as outraged if not more so.

It's nearly 9 years. Every morning the feud reignites but she's probably not even aware 😂

I looked at the other local PureGym but my membership would go from £10.99 to £18.99 a month so not worth it. All other gyms open at 6.30 which is when I leave.

9 years ago I was 63kg thinking I was horrendously overweight because that's what my BMI and the doctors told me. If I only I had ignored it and not focused on food so much to develop these bad habits.

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 22/05/2024 21:02

Oh @CommeUneVacheEspagnole that's so sad.

Since Christmas I have lost 3 st with Slimming World. I don't do all their fannying on with syns and things. I eat the free foods and make sure (as a vegetarian) I am getting protein. It hasn't been difficult.
I should be delighted- my knees have stopped aching, I walk miles again, lots of my clothes fit.
Thing is, I never look in mirrors, I don't like looking at myself. But today, I caught sight of myself (full length shot) in a mirror, sitting down . I looked huge, absolutely vast- all flabby tummy and thick torso and I am so upset. I do still need to lose two st but unless it all comes off my tummy and torso I will still look awful. I wasn't imagining I looked amazing but I had no idea I still looked so dreadful
It hasn't made me want to eat- the opposite really, has made me more determined. It's just I had started to feel more human again and now I feel like a big bag of flab again.

3 stone is amazing! Don't be disheartened because you were at the wrong angle when you look great from other angles.

3 stone really is an achievement and that's a very short time so you've obviously put in great work.

I know there is sense in what you say and thank you. It was just so disheartening- I felt like it was a flash of the harsh truth.

Yogachick · 23/05/2024 09:09

@LuluBlakey1 3 st is amazing, sitting down is rarely a good angle. You judge yourself very harshly. You’ve done phenomenally well- do you exercise at all?walking is great but I find I need some weights/pilates/yoga to strengthen my core. I’ve neglected that of late as we have a new dog who needs lots of walking,I’ve really noticed the difference in tone, even though I’m still podgy
your approach to Slimming World interests me- do you go to classes?

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 23/05/2024 10:10

If it makes you feel better @LuluBlakey1 , I was in a hotel room last week and sat on the bed with a mirror next to me. I was talking to my colleague who was standing across the room and caught sight of myself. I looked like a blob of mash potato someone had thrown on the bed. Vile. But I don't look too bad standing up. @Yogachick is right. Sitting down is not the one!

I walk miles - we do 15-20 miles most weekends and I do a 4 mile walk most days. My legs are looking great. It’s the middle bit of me. I will start doing something like yoga or Pilates if I can lose a bit more. I can’t face myself in a mirror in a studio yet.

I do go to the weekly SW meeting- it’s not an ultra-orthodox group, not evangelical about the programme. Some people follow it more strictly than others .

It's easy to say and hard to do but you'll probably benefit from being a little kinder to yourself. You've lost 3 stone since Christmas which is a terrific achievement. What you're doing is clearly working. What you probably won't ever be again is that person you maybe think you should be - the young slim hot version of yourself you're somehow failing to live up to. That's ok.
