Losing a couple of kg support thread

GetYourHandOut · 28/04/2024 15:36

I'm blaming the shite weather rather than the biscuits but I'm still in my winter phase and am at the top end of my usual weight range.

I'd like to lose a couple of kg to feel more comfortable and confident as summer (hopefully) approaches.

Does anyone want to join me for a support and accountability thread?

Thanks @CheapMustard !
I used to be veggie and I do think it's harder if I'm honest, it's very easy to fill up on carby foods - not that I've anything against carbs but they are easy to overeat!
I don't know if this sort of thing would appeal but most weekends I make a dal and use it as a base for work lunches through the week. I add a small side salad and change that for variety (eg leaves + avocado, boiled eggs, feta etc). This is one of my favourites. Filling with a small portion of rice, keeps well in the fridge and it costs pennies

If you don't have a pressure cooker you could look at ones that use red lentils as they can be cooked on the hob without hours soaking

Instant Pot Chana Dal

Instant Pot Chana Dal - easy, comforting and delicious chana dal made in the instant pot. This recipe is vegan and gluten-free.

I'm veggie too. Inspired by PP, I've had a spinach and blueberry smoothie with protein powder. Had to add a teaspoon of honey as this pea protein is very earthy! I've been really enjoying eggs, having with asparagus and potato salad this evening but will mix in some yogurt to make the mayo go a little further. Agree overall that most veggie food is carby. Pulses are the way to go, and when you think of a balanced meal on your plate remember that the pulse doubles up as a carbohydrate so no need for rice, potatoes, couscous, bread, pasta etc as well as lentils, beans or chickpeas. Easier said than done though, I love pasta and bread!!

Maddy70 · 07/05/2024 12:19

I stopped drinking. No other changes lost almost a stone

GetYourHandOut · 07/05/2024 13:02

I hope everyone is having a good sunny Tuesday. It makes everything feel a bit easier ☀️

I'm eating fairly lightly today to balance out the over indulgence of Sunday! I just had a really tasty lunch - pouched eggs and ham on a piece of toast, with a side salad to up the veg intake.

@GetYourHandOut the sunshine is really helping me focus on my summer goals!!

@ProteinPud hi!!

Proteinpud · 07/05/2024 15:12

Oh hey @everycowandagain !

I've eaten a bit too much chocolate today. Cooking up some veggie filled Bolognese to keep in the fridge so I have something better to pick at!

everycowandagain · 07/05/2024 17:19

@Proteinpud I use nutracheck, it's great! You can customise a lot of views to see what you want/how you want to see it.

The only thing I don't like is that it shows your last 7 weigh ins and I like to weigh daily and see the trend over a couple of weeks so I do still log weigh in mfp where you can see your weigh graph over a lot of different time frames.

SaggyOldClothDog · 07/05/2024 17:51

@Proteinpud I signed up to Nutracheck last year and found it much better than My Fitness Pal for logging food. I just find tracking in general hard to stick with. It's easy enough for breakfast and lunch but I find it awkward with family meals in the evening, esp when DH cooks.

To be fair, I doubt it's my meals that do the damage. Might start logging puddings, snacks and alcohol and see if the shame of seeing it all add up will help 🤣.

@everycowandagain We tend to have our tea fairly early (6ish) - mind you I tend to go for an early lunch too, so it's probably all relative. Ended up opting for a protein bar this afternoon (ultraprocessed with sweeteners etc so still not great but figured it's better than something that was pure sugar).

Have stocked up on some different nuts so might do a little trail mix. Keep hearing how filling nuts are (though previous experience has indicated I need approx half a bag before that feeling kicks in. The same applies to ultra dark chocolate. I've never felt satisfied after one small square 🐷).

Proteinpud · 07/05/2024 21:49

@SaggyOldClothDog I have never understood the concept of 'if you crave sugar/chocolate, eat a banana, or a few squares of dark chocolate'.
I'll eat the banana, or the dark chocolate, still be craving sugary chocolate and I'll be on the galaxy hall an hour later!
The only thing that reduces those cravings for me is keeping full on protein, though that's preventative and needs a bit of planning.

I've been quite good at logging so far but mainly because I tend to do the cooking. I have been quickly weighing my own food as I'm serving up, and I've logged a few batch cook meals including the weight so I can accurately log portions. Though most of the time really the difference is the family size bags of minstrels that I'm prone to inhale when stressed. I know tracking isn't for everyone, works for me but then Im used to tracking workouts and habits so it's just one more thing for me!

Managed to get out to my class tonight - martial arts/movement so not a huge calorie burner but it's activity at least.

Eyesopenwideawake · 08/05/2024 08:29

I got my acronyms mixed up!!

SW 64.4kg
CW 63.4kg (but only because I ate very little yesterday)
TW 60.45kg

everycowandagain · 08/05/2024 08:35

I have got my gym session done and logged my food, I have a full day of calls WFH today but should be able to amble along on my walking pad for some of them.

I am down about 0.6kg in just over a week so I am pleased with that! Slow and steady...

@Proteinpud are you me?! 😂 Family sized bags of minstrels are my downfall. Particularly on a work day afternoon when they can be shovelled in one handed. 🙈

Proteinpud · 08/05/2024 08:57

Hah we are definitely work twins in that case! I find the act of having to log what I eat makes a big difference to those moments. I've started buying chocolate that is in smaller portions as I find if I'm stressed/working I'll just eat what's there, presumably because I'm distracted.

Proteinpud · 08/05/2024 08:58

Congrats @everycowandagain !

RamaSita · 09/05/2024 16:49

Hi everyone. Yesterday we were celebrating so a bit indulgent but all homemade 'real food'. Apart from the wine Smile
Had a day away from my desk today but took a healthy lunch with me, and avoided getting a breakfast pastry. Couple of biscuits may have found their way to me but feeling quite motivated for this evening to just have veggie chilli and a herbal tea. Scales haven't moved since Monday - I'm inpatient! When you start to see change it's so much easier to continue I find.

Proteinpud · 09/05/2024 17:34

I also overindulged yesterday, was very hormonal and my appetite was through the roof. Allowed myself to roll with it without going too crazy, it's one day. Logged it as I went so.I was aware of how it adds up and trying to focus on getting my average down. Just finished my third strength session of the week so I figure the extra sugar went to some use! Have managed to eat well today at least. Haven't weighed myself as I know it'll be crazy fluctuations this week.

everycowandagain · 09/05/2024 18:19

@RamaSita so true, once you start to see some movement on the scales it really gives you some motivation but until then you have to put the work in and trust the process!

SpongeBlobSquareFace · 10/05/2024 06:01

Hello everyone
I'm a late joiner, was on another thread but can't find it. I'm cutting out sugar and in two days I've gone from 58kg to 56.2kg.
Yes it's water but woo hoo
I have been told to lose weight by my rheumatologist as the weight is affecting my knees.
Goal weight is 54kg

Meadowfinch · 10/05/2024 06:14

I'm the same. I'm 5'8" and currently 68kg. The endless rain and dreariness had me reaching for the biscuits until Tuesday when it finally warmed up, I got some sun and the cravings disappeared. I'm aiming for 64kg.

Last night I had steamed asparagus with hollandaise and still feel full this morning.

This weekend I shall ParkRun, then go shoe shopping in the sunshine and not feel the slightest need for HobNobs.

God, what a relief ! 😎

everycowandagain · 10/05/2024 07:47

The scales were down slightly for me this morning (in pounds) but when I converted it to kg it was tiny progress so I am sticking with pounds for now!!

Early weights session currently in progress, then I will squeeze in as much cardio as I can before work. Food for the day all planned!

everycowandagain · 10/05/2024 07:49

I can see some muscles peeking out in the gym mirrors though, I am losing a bit of body fat for sure:-)

GetYourHandOut · 10/05/2024 08:31

Welcome new posters ❤️

@everycowandagain I love lifting weights 💪. Such a great feeling when you see a bit of muscle emerging.

I'm having a really settled week on the eating front. Feeling pretty good about just plodding on!

I had a big loss last week so I'm expecting something much more modest this week, but it's all good.

SmallestInTheClass · 10/05/2024 08:37

Hello, I'd love to join too. I am not overweight but do weigh 1.5kg than normal after illness early in the year and then just bad habits during the miserable spring weather. I'd love to lose about 1kg. My plan is to do more walking, avoid puddings in the week and stop drinking alcohol more than a day a week. I've found swapping to non alcoholic lager/sparkling wine is a good way to reduce calories. They seem to have half the calories of the alcoholic ones. Not quite the same, but often in the summer I just want a cold, refreshing drink so hits the spot.

Proteinpud · 10/05/2024 08:53

Good call @SmallestInTheClass l have pretty much given up drinking - I'll have one if I really fancy it but I've just gone off it, and it does make a difference for me about how consistent I am.

I'm about to go on a hike, @Meadowfinch I hear you about the rubbish weather, I swear fruit and veg tastes better in the sunshine.

everycowandagain · 10/05/2024 09:47

Welcome @SmallestInTheClass sounds like you have a good plan

@GetYourHandOut same here, I have spent most of the past couple of years training at maintenance or in a surplus to add muscle especially to my upper body and it's so exciting to see the changes as my body fat drops. I have hammered delts and arms for the past 6 months and I finally appear to have some actual triceps.
