hows this thread?

Nikkid, Here's a Jamie Oliver recipe for jerusalem artichokes. Haven't tried it before, though might buy some and give it a go this week. Might need to prepare myself for a windy day after, going by some of the comments

nikkid21 · 18/03/2008 20:08

thatnks toadette - they sound quite nice. Think i'll try roasting them up with some beetroot, butternut squash and carrots for all day veg nibbles.

How much water should we be drinking a day. My liquid intake is pretty low except when I go to the gym and then I drink a 1 litre bottle during an hour workout.

Surprised myself today by trying jogging on the treadmill. Haven't done it since race for life in 2006 as my joints hurt too much. I actually managed to jog at 5mph for 15 minutes before feeling like I was going to die. The spinning classes must be paying off as I couldn't have managed more than 10 mins without a walking break before.

justplainoldRia · 18/03/2008 20:09

well done nikkid and toadette, but as they oh so annoyingly say in class "at least you know where it came from".

I will join in with - I will drink more water and less wine (shouldn't be a problem as too skint to drink much anyway) and I will aim to include more exercise. And I will post more (surely that isn't possible)

School holidays next week. Also have a lot of stress at home over the next week or so which I know will take over my sensible meal-planning brain and turn me into a nervous worry wreck, too twitchy to eat. But I will do my best.

I hope that's trying hard enough to be allowed to play?

toadette · 18/03/2008 20:18

Nikkid, well done on the treadmill. I like running because it's one of those sports activities that you can see improvement really, really quickly if you keep it up. I'm doing Race for Life this year again, hence the return to running last weekend after hibernation period over the winter!
Re the water, think it's around 6-8 large glasses through the day we should be aiming for.

Ria, hope the stress eases soon. Glad you joining in with the challenge. I have dcs off school/playgroup next week too, will have to get them out to park etc if weather good to keep up the stay active part of my pledge.

sugarlumps · 18/03/2008 20:52

whoa whoa whoa! lol whats veg box???? im intrigued?

OP posts:
toadette · 18/03/2008 21:04

Veg box is SWlurkers idea - buy lots of seasonal veg, maybe some don't normally use. Make lots of healthy meals, swap recipes etc, with hopeful result that we will all be feeling bit more svelte next week

SWlurker · 18/03/2008 21:45

1/2 lb off! VERY suprised!!

Right then Veg box challenge it is!

A veg box is something that you can get deliverd to you at home, often mainly organic. Basically as a rule you tend to pay a tenner ish and you'll get say 10-15 different types of fruit & veg - whatever is in season at the time. And being veg, many are speed or superspeed food!

If you want to sign up to a box scheme then great, if not, go to a local farmers market or to the supermarket and buy lots of veg - try to buy whats in season. In March apparently that is... Broccoli, brussels, onions, parsnips, potatoes, radish, Swede and watercress. Extra marks for more unusual veg and unusual recipes!

I'm going to pledge to eat at least one meal that is mainly veg every day this week.

Also thanks for the water suggestions - we should be drinking 8 250ml glasses of water a day - or 2 litres. I am going to pledge to drink at least 7 glasses of pure water a day this week (the rest might well be coffee!!)

And finaly exercise - pledge to do a bit more than you do at the moment. I pledge to park at the far end of the car park and to walk at least 15 mins in my lunchbreaks this week.

And I want a brilliant loss this week, whatever that is!!

Good luck everybody and keep us updated! x

justplainoldRia · 18/03/2008 21:56

I bought Broccoli, parsnips & potatoes today, Swede and onions I have already. And I will be eating all of them tomorrow. sweet potatoes, cauliflower & squash too.

I will look into a local veg box too.

Good luck everyone and keep posting

justplainoldRia · 18/03/2008 21:57

well done lurker

toadette · 18/03/2008 22:03

Well done, lurker

toadette · 18/03/2008 22:07

Have dug out my exercise DVDs so will give one of these a blast on days that I can't get out for walk.

nikkid21 · 19/03/2008 08:04

Veg box wise I get mine delivered from Riverford Organic. It's a lot cheaper than organic veg in tesco and the taste is a lot better.

I have the artichokes, cauliflower, red cabbage and leeks still to use from the box I got last Friday. If anyone has a recipie for sw chesse sauce that would be great for the leeks and cauli.

I'll try to drink 2l of water a day - when I did this before I filled up a 2l coke bottle and kept it in the fridage. That way I knew how much I had drank.

Well done lurker on your loss. We all just need to keep it together in the face of a choccy egg mountain on Sunday. My kids have been given 4 each already

SWlurker · 19/03/2008 08:30

Mmm leeks in cheese sauce! I do my SW cheese sauce as a tub of from frais, an egg beaten in, seasoned, heated lightly and HEa grated cheese stirred in at the end. Can use quark instead for thicker sauce.

or my consultant said yesterday most of the colmans packet sauces are a few syns per packet and tend to serve 3-4 people, I think the cheese ones are around 7 syns a packet, but 3.5 syns for half a packet doesn't seem too bad to me. You can use the milk you make it with as HEa.

I have a strange craving for quorn sausages with cabbage can't say I've ever craved cabbage before (no, I'm definately not pg), but its SW friendly so I think I'll indulge myself. Weird but never mind.

sugarlumps · 19/03/2008 08:34

ahhhh i see, well i tendo to do the veg shop for the pub so i when im at the farm shop i will just get extra for me! i went through a stage of buying a different veg item a week that i hadnt tried before but stopped after i tried butternut squash. im not sure why!
im going to try the water thing as well though. got weigh in 2moro. i reaslly hope its more than 1/4lb like the last couple of weeks! need 2lb off to get my 1 1/2 stone award!
well done on your losses girls!
ps does anyone kno wthe password this week yet?

OP posts:
toadette · 19/03/2008 08:46

I've missed the deadline for delivery before Easter with our local organic company. Will head to greengrocer's and stock up tomorrow morning and will use up what's in fridge in meantime.

I'm out for dinner tonight, anyone got any suggestions for what type of food would be the most SW friendly on either red or green? Really want to stick to it while I'm out. Will keep to free foods during the day today so I have all my syns and HEs for tonight? Might have some wine tonight but if I do it will max 2 glasses and won't have any again until perhaps Sunday with my dinner.

Keep up the good work everyone. Cucumber is password I think.

nikkid21 · 19/03/2008 09:11

I've had a look at the cheese sauces on the syns online and the lowest is Morrisons 28g instant cheese sauce (dried) at 5 1/2 syns per pack. The colmans 4 cheese is also fairly low at 6 1/2

Where are you going tonight toadette? Steakhouse, italian, indian ?

toadette · 19/03/2008 09:21

Haven't booked anywhere yet so open to suggestions, whatever would be kindest on syns. We're going to see Dara O'Briain tonight so we're nipping in for something to eat beforehand.

SWlurker · 19/03/2008 09:22

Ria - just read your last post properly. Hope everything's going to be ok. Could your challenge for this week be to have a store cupboard full of free grab and go stuff, no thought or effort required? e.g. on green, tins of baked beans, spaghetti, noodle mug shots, yoghurts, cheese portions e.g. babybel, apples, bananas, alpen light bars etc? That way if you're at home or out you can grab a handful of stuff and munch your way through?

Good luck for the week whatever x

Bouncingturtle · 19/03/2008 09:52

Hello, can I join you?

I rejoined SW 4 weeks ago, so far have lost 5.5lbs.
I'm doing the plan for BFers - anyone else here doing it? Sorry haven't as yet read all the posts.
I joined Slimming World orginally about 7 years ago (blimey was it that long ago!) and lost 2.5 stone. However, married life and baby came along (crap excuse I know and I've put on about 3.5 stone in the meantime!
Been doing okay so far, having a mix of green days and red days. But could do with some extra support as I find myself going off the rails a little at times

toadette · 19/03/2008 10:08

Hi bouncingturtle, welcome

Think I'm going to have a green day today and make a big pot of lentil and carrot soup. Can help myself to bowls throughout the day to stop me nibbling. Italian or Chinese tonight may be the best choices then for a green day perhaps? Can fill up on veg-based pasta and rice dishes. Don't forget the water, girls. Drink up!

justplainoldRia · 19/03/2008 10:16

chinese with boiled rice (eew) toadette. Am of Dara O'Brien, I think he is really funny. I loved that programme he did where he went to weird conventions.

Had ham & mushroom omelette for breakfast in bed today (it's my birthday), will be busy cleaning all day so lunch on the go, but big roast dinner tonight (beef) as my "party" (must find some balloons).

Thanks for the suggestion re store cupboard food. I will try hard.

Just another quick veg box question. Doyou find what you get lasts you the full week until you get your next one? I just have a feeling if I find somewhere I can get one here it will be seriously expensive because there isn't much call for them.

justplainoldRia · 19/03/2008 10:17

sorry, welcome bouncing turtle.

I have a magazine somewhere that has eating out recommendations. If I get time I'll have a look. If you have curry you're supposed to have plain rice and a "dry" meat dish.

toadette · 19/03/2008 10:30

Are Mugshots free on green? Think I have a couple in the larder that I could have today if they are.

Compare the prices with what you could buy elsewhere, Ria, to make sure you're getting a good deal. Some companies might be cheaper than suprmarkets as most of the stuff will be seasonal but shops can have good deals too. I've just called into Lidl this morning and got a bag of carrots for 29p, which I'm using for my soup. They do an organic range now too which might be worth looking at.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY{smile]

toadette · 19/03/2008 10:31

oops, missed out on one of your 's there!

Bouncingturtle · 19/03/2008 10:42

Mugshots - the noodles ones are free, but I don't think the pasta ones are.
Happy Birthday Ria
