Ooh - how lovely. Will keep an eye out for it. I'm sure she'd love to do a book swap (would we return the books eventually, or just swap them?). And it's lovely to see you again. No duffing up here. Just a welcoming hug pat on the back.

WigWamBam · 04/03/2008 20:36

Returning them when read, I think (but who knows how their minds work?!).

I'm sure she'd be open to other suggestions though.

Sounds like a good idea, because then they won't worry about sending books they've loved and might want to read again.

WigWamBam · 04/03/2008 21:26

I think this is what she wants to do, really - she just wants to share Finn Family Moomintroll with someone!

Dh has just taken the cat to the emergency vets ... is going to cost an arm and a leg, isn't it. She's only ever ill when the vets are closed

OP posts:
WigWamBam · 04/03/2008 21:36

Dh has just rung ... the vet cost £114

JackieNo · 04/03/2008 22:05

OH blimey. That's a lot. Will she be home tonight, or will they keep her there, do you know?

I've never read Finn Family Moomintroll, so I'll look forward to that too. I'm loving rediscovering all the books I read when I was a kid. I re-read Swallows and Amazons at the weekend, as my Mother's day treat to myself, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

WigWamBam · 04/03/2008 22:11

She's home. Am seriously considering sending her out to sweep chimneys to raise the money to pay the bill ...

Dd has really enjoyed the Moomin books. She was captivated by Tom's Midnight Garden, and at the moment is thoroughly enjoying Alice In Wonderland. She seems to enjoy the richness of the language, which both pleased and surprised me - some of the more modern books are much more accessible, but they miss some of the magic.

I am the proud owner of two Moomin mugs. I used to absolutely love the Moomins as a child. What good taste your dd has WWB!

JackieNo · 05/03/2008 07:41

Yes - I quite agree about the richness of the language being something that you don't get so much in many modern books (those effing Rainbow Fairy ones spring to mind). Mind you, I read Anne of Green Gables to her a while ago, and she really enjoyed it, but I found it really hard work to read out loud.

littlemisssensible · 05/03/2008 09:26

dd and I have been reading the Terry Pratchett children's books - currently the 'wee free men' series! (I do the reading, she does the listening!)

She loves the way he plays with words and they are indeed a vast improvment of 'rude words' rainbow fairys!!!!!

For her own reading it has to be very fast paced and exciting...doesn't matter how long or short it is as long as it moves along swiftly with the plot. She doesn't do long descriptive stuff at all!!!!

Her favorite book at the moment is Peter Pan in Scarlet which is very exciting apparently!

WigWamBam · 05/03/2008 10:17

I hate those ruddy Fairies books. Particularly because our local bookshop no longer stocks children's classics because they don't have room ... because they have to stock three million Fairies books.

Will have to keep an eye out for the Terry Pratchett ones.

I'm a bit of a Terry Pratchett fan (ok Nerd!!!!) But he has written some good children's books and, with the way he plays with language, they are quite funny but also get the little ones thinking about how words are used....or at least I think so!

The wee free men are fun as they are little blue pictsies in kilts with wild red hair. They are very stron and very fast and they love to drink and fight. The only thing that frightens them is words, so they also hate lawyers who write things down (or doon as they would say!)They have a fear of their names being written down!

He also did a series about small creatures who live under floor boards (a bit like borrowers, but much more feisty!) and one called Amazing Maurice and his performing Rats (or similar) which is about a talking cat and his very intelligent rat friends.

They're all worth a read as lo's get bigger, probably not worth introducing until they're at least 8 or 9 though because they can be complicated and involved!

JackieNo · 05/03/2008 17:28

I've read all the adult Terry Pratchett

littlemisssensible · 06/03/2008 11:46

Feeling VERY depressed!!!!!

i started the week at 13st 3lb having dug the scales out, which is more than I was after Christmas (but only by a 1-2lbs); and having been good all week, turning down biscuits at work and chocolate at home, I'm 13st 6lb this morning

what is going on!?! I know AF is here but that started just before beggining of week so the first wieght should have been the bloaty one! And I don't feel bloaty ..... just fat

The builders have been moving my scales around so may be they've adjusted/broken them?

Its a bit of a blow to the old moral....can't afford the time to get down to boots so I guess I'd better assume a scales problem and take 13st 6 as a new start wieght

Its not fair [feet stamping emoticon]

JackieNo · 06/03/2008 17:25

Oh dear, poor you LMS - I've put on the same amount. I'm trying to blame it on DH for not being here, but I don't think I can really justify that .

littlemisssensible · 07/03/2008 08:18

LMS siddles in looking sheepish.....

Sorry for whinging yesterday, I've since discovered that the extra lbs were all my fault

DH pointed out that I didn't seem to be taking the right number of pills each morning and when I checkecd I realised that I hadn't taken the diaretic (sp?) for several days (since the beginning of the week actually!

I took one yesterday morning, spent the day 'spending pennies' about every twenty minutes and this morning I weigh 13st 1.5lb

I'm amazed its made that much difference but chuffed that my week of biscuit and chocolate abstinence has actually had results!

JackieNo don't feel down, I always eat treats when dh is away . Its just sort of comforting (tend to eat crappy high calory ready meals too, 'cos I'm too lazy to cook )

JackieNo · 07/03/2008 12:26

Wow LMS - that's good news. Well done you.

Looks like it's just me that's put on then .

Littlefish · 07/03/2008 17:28

No idea! I wimped out of ww AGAIN this week. Only 6 weeks until the scary wedding (and 7 until my 40th birthday)

Kick me
Kick me
Kick me

Or at least hypnotise me into eating tiny portions and feeling full.

JackieNo · 07/03/2008 17:30

You are feeling very full. You are putting down the cutlery. You are stepping away from the fridge...

Littlefish · 08/03/2008 08:34

Ha ha.

Went out for huge curry last night. Shame I didn't read your message before I went out

JackieNo · 08/03/2008 09:09

Well I took the DCs to Pizza Express, so it didn't work on me either.

JackieNo · 11/03/2008 20:21

Right - have to post, or this is going to drop off 'threads I'm on'. Am doing pretty badly. Sliding back to old ways - bit of cake with lunch, biscuits in the morning, snacks in the afternooon, too many puddings etc. Not good. Not out of control eating, but will be gradually putting everything back on at this rate. And haven't got back to running since I did something to my back the day DH left.

Littlefish · 14/03/2008 19:21

Well, I don't know if anyone else weighed yesterday, but I was brave and went to WW.

I lost 2lbs. That makes 15.5 in total

We are off to the Carribean in May now, rather than August so I need to pull my finger out!

JackieNo · 14/03/2008 20:35

Wow Littlefish - well done you. That's really good. I wimped out of weighing. My period started today, which might explain the rather out of control eating in the last couple of days. And the hooting and banshee-like screaming at the man on a bike who pulled out in front of me at a roundabout yesterday evening.
