"I Started Ozempic Last Night" THREAD THREE

1000 replies

Athena51 · 16/02/2023 08:44

Starting a new thread as we are dangerously close to finishing thread two. So great to have this supportive community to share our experiences of taking Ozempic for weightloss.

"Old-timers" and new starters all welcome!

Thats fab.i started with a bmi of 31 so have a long way to go to get to a healthy bmi. I need to shift 3 stone at least. Hoping to do it in 3/4 months. You are all amazing inspiration that it can be done.x

Thank you 😊

I'm not trying to be unsupportive. We are all taking this drug under our own risk and pp with the lower BMI have as much right to take that risk as any of us. I just think that being barely into the overweight category and wanting to take a powerful drug to lose weight isn't adding up for me. I'm 42 and have been overweight since I was 20 and obese since I was 28. This is not a quick fix for me, it's a last ditch effort. I will be as supportive to that poster as anyone in their weight loss journey but I can say I don't think it's a good idea. There is also the issue of insulin and blood sugar. At lower weights people are less likely to have insulin resistance problems or be pre diabetic which are the symptoms the drug is actually designed to target. How effective will ozempic be if the appetite suppressant effect is only acting on the body because of the slower transit which wears off fairly quickly?

also WRT saying 1600 is pre diet calories - maybe for you! Personally I burn 2100 a day minimum (that's on a slow day of maybe 6000 steps and no exercise) and I often burn 2500-2700 if I walk a lot and do a workout. That's partly because I'm heavy, but I'm also active. Eating 1600 leads to very reliable weight loss for me and doesn't leave me hungry. I'm not trying to lose weight quickly - I don't want loose skin and I want to change my set point which from what I have read involves slowly losing 10% body weight then maintaining for a while, then repeat etc. We are all different here.

I'm not sure if you were addressing me or not Mairead? Apologies if not.
I have also struggled with my weight for a long time and I was almost in the obese category. I am 46.

Just because i'm not obese, it doesn't mean that I do not have as much potential risk for diseases as you do. My ethnic background means I am at high risk for type 2 diabetes in the same way that an obese person may be be at at lower BMI. I was 29.4, so not far off.

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 04/03/2023 07:58

To clarify. High risk for some ethnic backgrounds is 27.5+. I was 29.4.

I think nearly everyone has good intentions on this thread & I don’t personally see any hierarchy between people who have several stones to lose (or have successfully lost a lot of weight) and those who only want to lose a couple of stone or who may be new to Ozempic. With the possible exception of Wired and Cherry, who don’t realise that this is a support group and seem to comment only to criticise others.
For everyone else, try to stay positive.

IcanandIwill · 04/03/2023 10:10

Will stay out of the debate and check in for anyone else new. I took my first dose Weds evening and it's now Saturday, the side effects have been limited to a little nausea and some reflux. I'm certainly eating less and the awful snacking that was my downfall is greatly reduced. Will be interesting to see how the weekend goes.

I took my first dose on Wednesday as well, so far no side effects and I'm amazed at my lack of interest in food! This is my third day without wanting breakfast whereas previously I was ravenous and never ever went without something first thing. It's bizarre and even my sceptical husband is amazed.

That's great. It's brilliant to not be a slave to the snacks isn't it? I also don't have lots of side effects, just the ability to eat a healthy day's worth of food. Keep going! Looking forward to hearing how you get on.

Sparklfairy · 04/03/2023 11:12

A lot of posters have been upset/defensive on this thread when people have waded in with comments trying to 'gatekeep' ozempic from those who aren't diabetic - yet.

Some of those same upset posters are somewhat hypocritical if they're judging those considering ozempic who aren't 'fat enough - yet'.

Best to leave it to the companies themselves to decide if they'll supply it and don't make anyone feel shit really.

weightymatters73 · 04/03/2023 12:11

Just as a point of note, regarding how overweight you need to be to "do this"

I can genuinely say I have had an issue since I had children (14 years ago!)

I used an iron willpower to first go from 29 bmi to 24, then from 32 bmi to 24, them from 34 to 26 bmi....now I am 35 BMI.

I do not doubt I should have been doing this all along, so should we stop people who are 29 bmi doing this? I suspect it is less harmful than the Cambridge diet (please discuss!!).

Ok sure, but people are talking about lying about their BMI to get it so it's not completely up to the companies whether they prescribe to them or not.

weightymatters73 · 04/03/2023 12:16

....just to say I GENUINELY have had so much trouble losing weight, the extreme hunger I get when dieting (and yes I do know all the tricks to feel full!)...

I maintained my weight around 24-26 BMI pre children with no trouble and lost a stone when I needed to with weight watchers. When I did the same diet post DC and actually put weight on...I tried slimming world with the same result. I stopped drinking all alcohol - nothing. Cambridge on a 600 cal shake diet did give me weight loss but which I think is terribly unhealthy.

orangelotus · 04/03/2023 12:18

tbh i see it as a treatment for something.
So if you said you had a headache and needed to take pain killers it wouldn't be my place to query whether your headache justified taking the medication.
The genie is out of the bottle now so i'm hoping it will help everyone who struggles with their weight.
hopefully the manufacturers will be able to supply the amount needed plus i got an email today from superdrug saying they will soon have wegovy - which from my understanding is weight loss specific.
I just feel so relieved to see the numbers very slowly going down on the scales and i'm sure that's the same for everyone

HolibobsinApril · 04/03/2023 13:14

So my update. End of week 5. I didn't feel ready to go up to 0.5 so I took 0.25 and another 0.25 half way through the week.

The only side effect I had was that I didn't poop for 6 days. This morning I feel so much better and am now down a total of 11lbs over the 5 weeks which I am very happy with.

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and take the 0.5 dose tomorrow. I'm at home all day tomorrow so if I feel dodgy I'll be fine.

Well done for everyone else's successes. To keep this a purely support thread would be nice too 😊

OatFox · 04/03/2023 13:24

I've taken my first 0.25mg dose a few hours ago. Here we go!

HolibobsinApril · 04/03/2023 13:29

Good luck @OatFox

I agree, and people who struggle with their weight deserve research to be done into medical treatment whether they are overweight or obese. It needs to be a priority for all of us.

Update from me - started 0.25 on Tuesday night with thigh injection. No real side effects apart from a bit of bloating and small amount of reflux . I've only noticed these things as Im looking for them. It has certainly shut down the food chatter in my head. I had a sandwich for lunch and only wanted 3/4. This is such a strange feeling - to only really want to eat food as fuel and not have the constant need to put food in my mouth. I feel like I have so far been released from an addiction. Lost 3 pounds so far. I went out for lunch with a friend and noticed how much slower I ate- normally I embarrassingly devour mine but I just wasn't bothered about putting the food in my mouth. My friend had a dessert and usually I would be feeling jealous and annoyed that I 'couldnt' have one . But this time she could've been eating lettuce rather than the brownie that was in-front of her. Ha ha food! I see you but I no longer have to answer to your calling! Grin

Brilliant! I feel exactly the same. FREEDOM!

Lndnmummy · 04/03/2023 16:43

@Twiglets1 all going ok so far since I dipped back to 0.5mg although it really isnt doing much. Going up to 0.75 tmrw.

To everyone else, lets keep the spirit of the thread going, for everyone! I al 45, diagnosed with PCOS at 19. Managed to maintain an ok weight until I had my second child although it was hard (despite being an elite gymnast). I still got gestational diabetes in my second pregnancy. Despite being slim. It is hereditary for me. In lockdown I suffered mental health issues and put on 3 stone. I'm 5.2...

I want to live to see my children grow up. I want to be an active 'older parent'. I want to be as healthy as I can. At the moment I need ozempic and anti depressants to support me. Imagine if those people with 27-28 BMIs get their weight under control now. Perhaps that saves them from being me in 10-15 years. If so. We should support them. Lets be inclusive - and supportive.

Pleased to hear it’s going ok for you now & good luck with going up to 0.75mg tomorrow. I am STILL getting nausea & vomiting on 0.25mg (what a wimp) so I’ve kinda stopped taking it, at least for now. Disappointed as I have dropped 10lb, but I can’t face being ill all the time 🤢
Totally agree with your comment about being inclusive & supportive.

Lndnmummy · 04/03/2023 16:54

So sorry to hear @Twiglets1, its awful when you feel like that. Have you tried Saxenda?

WhyDoesItAlways · 04/03/2023 17:12

Took my first dose last night. I have the slightest bit of heartburn but it's not bothering me much.

I think about food all the time but that's only because I keep asking myself if I'm hungry - which I'm not!

Can I just ask - are there any foods/drinks that more experienced users are avoiding because they make side effects seem worse?

Twiglets1 · 04/03/2023 17:22

No I haven’t. I may consider it in the future but really don’t like the idea of daily injections.
I am thinking positively and continuing with my diet and healthier eating plus doing more exercise. Ozempic really helped to kickstart my diet (the bit I normally find hardest is week 1) so now I’m going to try hard to keep it going. I feel ok about things, will stay on this thread for a while to follow everyone’s progress & share the things I’ve learnt.

Athena51 · 04/03/2023 17:59

Doing fine here, went to the gym 4 times last week and I am prioritising strength training over the scale right now. Obviously still a way to go but using Ozempic to help me make the lifestyle changes that are going to keep the weight off long-term.

I'm supportive of anyone who decides to take Ozempic, I don't think anyone here does it lightly. If something like this had been available when my BMI was lower than maybe I wouldn't have got to 20 stone and a BMI over 40? Support not judgement.

So not hungry today that I forgot that baked potatoes take over an hour and hadn't even turned the oven on (I was a bit over-excited after the football!). Me, the emotional eating queen, forgetting about food. I don't even know who I am anymore Smile
