30kg to lose. Who else is in this ballpark?

That's ambitions - I am 51 and it's taking me to my 21 year old weight. (On the other hand, when I weighed that - or anything lower - I was never ever satisfied)

Is there anyone else in that kind of region? I am seeing a lot of threads from the people with around a stone, or a stone and a half to lose

OP posts:

I weighed myself yesterday and then again this morning and put on 3lb overnight. It really isn't worth weighing so frequently. I have quite bad DOMS (water retention caused by heavy exercise) and I've got a personal training session tomorrow and Tuesday so I'm sure by Wednesday I'll have 'put on' weight. Even though I know it's just water retention, it is hard not to get despondent about it!

I've stuck to my calories but have come to the conclusion that because I'm working from home, I just don't move enough in the week. I'm going to try and start running more frequently.

RedDoughnut · 12/02/2023 10:12

@CreepingCrone - do you feel any better for the weight loss so far?

Have you got any tips or tricks to pass on?

RedDoughnut · 12/02/2023 10:15

@kirinm interesting post, I've upped my exercise I wonder if I can put down any of my lack of weight loss to increased exercise?

I need to see the scales moving down to stay motivated.

I'm much too fat to run!

kirinm · 12/02/2023 10:33

@RedDoughnut if you ache because you've exercised, it's likely water retention.

I wouldn't call what I do running. I'm extremely slow and am gradually building up how long I can run for. I managed intervals of 1.2km which was about 9 mins so you can see how slow I am.

CreepingCrone · 12/02/2023 10:42

@reddoughnut I do feel better. No more reflux or IBS since I started. I've recently started sorting through my clothes (& bedroom) to recycle what no longer fits. I've got a shoebox full of Omeprazole and Gaviscon, because reflux was a constant torture. I have been on almost every diet going, tried every fad and iteration. Eventually I started Cambridge 121, which I had previously sneered at. I've learned a lot about myself. A reset without conventional food gave me a massive break from negative self talk, bingeing and obsessing about what to eat. I think you have to take from it what you need. I'm slowly relearning healthy eating at this age, after such a long time of bouncing from one diet to another. I feel calm and ok, such a mental relief. I used to run l alot and have always dreamed of getting back into it. That's my next thing to address. It takes time to find equilibrium so I'll have to be patient

Blacktreacle · 13/02/2023 10:59

But of a full on and pre-menstrual week followed by social weekend. Have neither gained nor lost. Trying to be focused and mindful this week - period plus half term plus big meeting end of the week.

I have noticed a difference in my clothes around my tummy (not so tight) and my boobs (bra cups a bit loose).

Telling myself that last week and this are as important as the east weeks where I lose lots. Because if I give up when it's harder then I'll never change, whereas if I deal with these weeks as mindfully as possible then I'm in a better position to keep going when the easier weeks come. And that these harder weeks will keep coming so I've got to learn to cope - I think for women we have a couple of weeks a month where things are just easier and a couple where we're fighting against hormones and we have to learn to get through both to lose lots of weight permanently. And this is even harder when it is premenstrual hormonal madness!

You can do it!

Completely agree re hormonal issues. Pretty sure I'm ovulating today / around now and I'm bloated and achy. Scales are only moving in one direction and it isn't down! I know I'm eating well, I know I'm exercising regularly and it is so hard to do all that and see scales going in the opposite direction. I know that if I continue at some point there will be a drop but it isn't particularly motivating.

SeventyPounds · 13/02/2023 14:11

I have a 'rule' that says so long as I know I've been eating and moving to plan, then whatever the lowest weight is that I have seen on the scales is my official weight, even if I see fluctuations up. Otherwise, hormones really mess with the numbers.

For me that means I am comparing apples to apples when looking at how much I've lost.

i.e. my lowest weight one month compared to my lowest the next should see a drop.

Something like Happy Scale helps me track and see the trends, beyond today's number.

I totally agree with whoever upthread said this this is really a mental game.

Blacktreacle · 13/02/2023 17:35

That's a really good idea @SeventyPounds I'll look to do that

Captainladder · 14/02/2023 06:27

"it’s so frustrating that the weight comes off at a snail’s pace - but yet goes on - and stays on - so quickly."

have been thinking about this a lot - then looked at an old diary I had. It's taken me 3 years to put on 5 kgs.... so though I feel like it was a sudden increase - it wasn't.... that's helpful for me because I can allow myself less of a rush to get back to what I'd like to weigh (though ideally I'd like it to be quicker than 5kgs less in 3,years!!!)

DressingForRevenge · 14/02/2023 07:00

@Captainladder Gosh that’s an aha moment right there! I moan and bitch that the scales fly up and down and my low-carb/1000 calories in seems to do fuck all - and yet getting weighed by the surgery nurse the other week showed I was only a few pounds more than 2 years ago. There’s been a fuck of a lot of fluctuations in between though. 🙄 Wasn’t it Liz Taylor who said she’d lost 300lb? The same 40 over and over and over…

Anyway, my eating is “on track” and I feel in control in that respect. Clothes are definitely getting looser, but damnit we’ve been at this a month and I’m still not 9 stone and a size 8. 😉

RedDoughnut · 14/02/2023 07:24

I'm UP 2lbs this morning!

This is supposed to be 7000 extra calories to make 2lbs of fat

It's impossible for it to be that.

I've bounced around the same weight for two weeks. I'm going to have to cut back even more.

I think I need a plan. Not just cutting back. I just don't know what my plan is yet.

Wednesday weigh in tomorrow will not be what I wanted it to be after a month of dieting.

SeventyPounds · 14/02/2023 08:03

I am also up about 2lbs this morning - this is from yesterday so I know it's not a 'real' number because I have eaten and exercised as planned. Plus, you know, no one can put on 2lbs of fat overnight.

I am also coming down with a cold, so supect that has something to do with it (perhaps causing water retention). It just goes to show you cannot take your daily figure as an exact science but have to focus on longer term trends.

For me, it also emphasizes how much health has to be a key focus, not (just) scale weight. Ultimately, whatever the scales say, I want to feel ok in clothes, want to reduce my risk of developing health issues and want to be able to move more freely.

I hope it helps that you are not alone in your rubbish scale-day @RedDoughnut

I'm currently up 2lbs up from last Wednesday which is bloody disappointing. When I was younger I could easily lose 3/4lbs a week but now it is so much harder.

Captainladder · 14/02/2023 12:00

It is so much harder as we get older - hormones don't make it easy!!
ideally what I'd like is to create a new relationship with food- I love cooking and eating.... I kind of think that if I stayed away from processed "hyper palatable" food (I'm looking at you chips, crisps and ice cream 🤣) and over eating, and focused on feeding myself lots of veggies (im a veggie anyway so that's not too hard!!) my weight would just naturally come down. I have no idea if that is actually true though, so my new resolve is to try this out for a month and see where it gets me.
i hate calorie counting with a passion.

Amisillyornot · 14/02/2023 12:48

@Captainladder I struggled a lot as I love food- am always thinking about food but mostly desserts/chocolates/cakes etc I have such a sweet tooth. I read an interesting article (not sure how true it is) - article says that even if we are eating healthy, unless there is a calorie deficit, then it is very unlikely that we would lose weight. Best way is to use a BMR calculator and go from there- it tells you how many calories you should eat to maintain weight, lose 1 lb a week or more - then you can play around with these. I find calorie counting very hard when home cooking as I feel am always either underestimating the calories (to make myself feel better). And do not even start with the hormones! am turning 45 in 2 weeks, perimenopause and I have made it a mission to fit into a dress I bought 5 years ago! I need a miracle lol

kirinm · 14/02/2023 19:42

@Amisillyornot we have similar birthdays as I'm 45 in just under 3 weeks!

Mother of fucking Christ. I literally had sauerkraut for dinner last night and homemade coleslaw for dinner Monday night.

At least we know if there’s a nuclear winter I won’t wither away within weeks.

I lost a bit since yesterday's 2lb gain but not the full lot. Ah well, I'm not giving up so fingers crossed for a better week for us all.

Given this past week I've had PMT and now on my period I can take no loss as it also means no gain. I'm adding my total loss just to keep my eyes on how I'm doing overall, hope that's ok

SeventyPounds · 15/02/2023 08:36

I think that's a good idea! I forgot to do it this week and it really helps me with the feeling like 'nothing's happening' to see the bigger journey.

THANKYOU everyone iv had a good week ! A really good week more importantly though iv stuck at it x it's a long time since iv stuck to two weeks. Finding the threads so motivating

Blacktreacle · 15/02/2023 09:47

Well done @freshstart49 - that's great!

kirinm · 15/02/2023 10:21

A very disappointing gain.

I'm hoping that this is water retention. I've done 3 heavy weight sessions since the last weigh in as well as running.

I'm hoping it'll eventually right itself and in a few weeks there will be a decent drop. But I will try and be stricter with calories and perhaps change what I'm eating.
