30kg to lose. Who else is in this ballpark?

trytopullyoursocksup · 15/01/2023 10:24

That's ambitions - I am 51 and it's taking me to my 21 year old weight. (On the other hand, when I weighed that - or anything lower - I was never ever satisfied)

Is there anyone else in that kind of region? I am seeing a lot of threads from the people with around a stone, or a stone and a half to lose

I’d be happy to join you in this quest. Similar age and I hit up the shops yesterday menu plans in hand.

quinceh · 15/01/2023 10:28

Hi OP. I’m 52 and have recently (since June) lost about 33kg, which has taken me just below my 25 year old weight. I still have some to go 😀 but wanted to wish you well- it can be done!

TheNinthLock · 15/01/2023 10:38

Me! I am 51 and need to lose 25kg to get to my 21 year old weight. Have successfully lost weight in the past (but always put a large part of it back on again)

TheNinthLock · 15/01/2023 10:39

quinceh, how did you lose the weight?

TheNinthLock · 15/01/2023 10:40

Meant to add - well done!!

trytopullyoursocksup · 15/01/2023 10:45

@quinceh - thank you! Well done! (what did you do?)
Everyone else - great to hear from you.
I too have lost and put on weight a lot in the past. The line has been bumpy but the overall trajectory is up and it is has put me at my highest weight ever.

My plan is based loosely on other more "off the peg" diets I have followed more strictly in the past. It's basically:

gentle low carbing (some fruit allowed, some whole grains allowed);
very small amounts of alcohol (only for a "good reason" occasionally);
8:16 intermittent fasting when possible (sometimes I will need to eat earlier for scheduling reasons, just do it and move on);
Keep moving, replace the walking I lost through my commute changing;
Keep the bigger picture in mind. Don't get hung up on day to day indiscretions. Just keeping doing most of the best things on most of the days and think long term.

I firmly believe that different things work for different people and for those of you around my age I am sure you know what works for you. the thing is doing it, and sticking to it, and staying positive

I'm 52 also. Historically was very slim until about 40ish when I [slowly] started to put on weight. Unfortunately after a lengthy period of depression and anxiety now find myself in pre-diabetes and need to lost about 4 stone. Would be good to hear your tips.

I do a bit of walking but not as much as I should be and this has generally helped me shed a bit of weight but the problem is, I love food!
And I love finishing off my grandkids dinners, chocolate, etc etc. I',m quite a good cook and as well as cooking more veggie, fish and less red meat, am also trying to only eat wholemeal versions of carbs, brown rice etc and also more oats, lentils and less sugar/processed food. I love salads so that helps a bit!

Dillydollydingdong · 15/01/2023 10:55

Slimming World worked for me. I lost 4 stone (25.4kg) several years ago. And it's stayed off (well, most of it has!). I must have retrained myself in what to eat (although I still have an occasional biscuit or Lidl's doughnut!) 😋

Suprima · 15/01/2023 10:57

I just wanted to offer my support to you all- I hit my goal weight yesterday- I lost 22kg and started in August. :)

Intermittent fasting through skipping breakfast was my main behavioural change.

Something else which I believed helped but kept me sane was the following: have that ‘treat’ if it’s worth it, but be aware of how it fits into your day.

Ie. If I went out for coffee and cake at 1pm, I would choose the cake I wanted and enjoy it- but calorie-wise, that was my lunch. I had no need to go home and make even a healthy chicken salad, because I had already eaten. Yep, I may have had hunger pangs- but that was my choice for wanting to choose something sugary.

Obviously not the healthiest habit, so I didn’t do this regularly- but it was just a mindset shift. So much of my weight piled on with mindless additional eating and this really did help me break the cycle. I would frequently have donuts in the staff room or a couple of cocktails after work and just wouldn’t even consider the calorie surpluses they were adding to my day.

TrodOnLegoAgain · 15/01/2023 11:07

Yes, me 🖐

Started this month and my main aim is to stop yoyo-ing- I've spent the last two years losing and gaining the same 7lb, by going on very strict diets (very low carb, for example) which I can't sustain, breaking them and then thinking "sod it, I'll start again next week" and eating everything in sight. So my plan for this year is to be a bit more flexible and sensible and not treat slip-ups as a reason to give up.

Vaguely aiming for the following-

16/8 on weekdays
Roughly 1200 calories
3 spin classes a week, 1 yoga or pilates and walking the dog every day
No alcohol (this is a big one for me as I'd got into the habit of drinking wine most nights)

Blacktreacle · 15/01/2023 15:23

Can I join?

I’m 46. Weigh 101kg. 20kg loss would see me a weight I’m very comfortable with. 30kg would see me just at upper edge of healthy BMI range. Even when I was at my fittest, doing lots of sport I was at the upper end of the healthy BMI range. So 20-30kg is realistic for me feel very healthy.

For me it will be all about diet. I average 10k steps a day and have done for over a year (didn’t measure before), I run once or twice a week and until the last month or so I exercised a few other times as well. I’m fairly fit for a fattie!

Whereas food - my husband is whip thin, does most of the cooking, and generally serves big portions because he’s always hungry (yep, I’m married to one of those annoying people who are thin and healthy despite eating tonnes) and I never say no as I like my food too much!

I find 14:10 eating has lots of benefits for me, now planning to add a 5:2 diet to that starting tomorrow and also not eating any chocolate because I need to go cold Turkey on it. I can happily eat 100g bar within minutes and moderation doesn’t work for me. Also focusing on portion size and a sort of vegetable first approach where my plates are less about the meat and carbs with veg on the side and more veg with small
Amounts of protein and carbs.

also I have no willpower and accountability of a group like this may be what I need

S70V12 · 15/01/2023 16:56

Was in this position last year and lost 30kg in 2022. 40kg in total from June 2021.

needtoloseweight1 · 15/01/2023 17:00

@S70V12 That's amazing, how did you do it?

NearlyfiftyF · 15/01/2023 17:04

Yes! I’m slightly younger but well in to peri so finding it hard.

Im also doing 8/16, calorie counting with a low carb focus

trytopullyoursocksup · 15/01/2023 17:11

@S70V12 well done! I have been thinking that if I'm serious i need to allow around a year to get to the weight I want, at least. Looks like that's what you did and you did it really consistently - that ongoing motivation is exactly what I need.

S70V12 · 15/01/2023 17:14

The method is outlined in the other thread I posted. Weight loss advice.

trytopullyoursocksup · 15/01/2023 17:19

I've set some interim goals for Easter, Midsummer and September. I think I need to break this down and feel like I have something to look forward to - being 15kg lighter for the summer would be amazing.
In September I am going to take a view - I might not hit that 9/12 target, it might not be realistic along with being happy and not obsessed. I might hit it, and decide that where I am is ok. I might keep going for the original goal. What I really dont want to do is what I usually do, which is start off losing weight relatively easily, because I have a lot to lose; then get close to a healthy weight for me (which is pretty stocky) and get depressed about not being willowy, get hungry and hangry through stringent dieting and just say "fuck it" and chunk out again. I am determined to take care of myself through this process, for the first time ever.

I love my body. This extra weight is part of what kept me going through tough times. It's served a purpose and I am going to lovingly say goodbye to it now.

VladmirsPoutine · 15/01/2023 18:08

I know the messaging about what you eat is more important but I just wanted to add when I shifted around 15kg the exercise helped enormously not least in terms of my mental health. Also gave me impetus to go to the gym on an evening (time permitting) and not be seduced by a glass of wine, spaghetti dinner.

trytopullyoursocksup · 16/01/2023 09:20

I feel a tiny bit slimmer this morning after a week of being a bit more sensible. I am not weighing myself again yet though.
Is anyone interested in keeping a small group going here where we get to know each other a bit? I like the anonymity of weight loss chat on mn (don't do this with my rl friends, it doesn't help me for some reason but makes me worse). But I also like to get to know a bit about people and what's driving them and where they're at.

We could carry on here if people would like a relatively frequent check-in about goals and stuff? Or if not I might move to the "losing weight for summer" thread

OP posts:
trytopullyoursocksup · 16/01/2023 09:21

Agree @VladmirsPoutine - exercise is really important as part of a holistic thing, not in the "flog off enough calories and you'll be fine" way but more in a sort of rebalancing your whole life way. I've struggled with asthma since getting covid but I've been using that as an excuse probably and have got some new meds now and really I need to admit that the sedentary life, the weight gain, and the asthma are all feeding into each other and I have to take action to break the cycle. Day 3 of week 3 of c25k this morning. Feeling good

RedDoughnut · 16/01/2023 09:51

@trytopullyoursocksup Can I keep you company?

I was going to start my own thread as so many on Mumsnet don't have much to lose and I don't identify.

I won't be thin at 30kg off but I might be healthier.
I have high blood pressure and diabetes that I want to reverse and aching joints.

I have no time to myself, I'm self employed and working all hours to keep my family. It's been so easy to eat junk.

trytopullyoursocksup · 16/01/2023 10:18

I know what you mean - I have been (still am) retraining through necessity, long hours and lots of stress put me in total "fuck it" mood on the diet and exercise front and I simply physically cannot afford to be like that.

Yes I love this too! What a great way to look at it.

@trytopullyoursocksup Id like to join for companionship, accountability and support. (Am less interested in people jumping on to say they’ve already done it - can google that! 😉).

Snow day here today and I’m just about to start making brunch.

I’m going low-carb and I’m “ashamed” to say I’m following a meal-plan. Unfortunately I’m an excellent cook and I’m not stupid - I know exactly what I’m putting in my mouth. So for the time being I just need to “follow the plan” as dull as it is.
