Fresh new year, fresh new start, fresh new habits. Jump right in to reset & refresh to become a healthier version of yourself. These threads are for those who’d like to lose and those who wish to maintain whilst eating a healthy varied diet.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and eat twice a day. Im a long time healthy eater and overall I’ve lost over 3 stone. After having been on the wrong side of 12st Im now hovering around 9st. I had a blip a couple of years ago when my thyroid went wonky but now back on track.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

PS - In the coming days I’ll post some links which some members might find useful. Feel free to share your own links, recipes and photos too 😊

@ImALittlePea not a series and not even a new movie (for most but it was for me) The Take/Bastille Day was good, or at least i enjoyed it.
we also watched the two top gun movies back to back.
yes @Cloudberries123 seeing the 140's is helpful so is the fact the costco sized mixed nuts have all been eaten.

buzzofthebumblebee · 09/01/2023 20:43

Roast veggie pasta bake was delicious. Made it with homemade roast cherry tomato & basil sauce too.

Mind you Cloud I'd have much rather had your curry !! Can't believe you still have Christmas goodies left. I personally made sure all ours had been eaten ready for 1st Jan fresh start ; )

Keep away from the kitchen everyone

AutisticLegoLover · 09/01/2023 22:55

9.35 miles walked today and I'm very happy with that. I won the week's fitbit bingo before school pick up time which is a personal best.

Food wise:
Porridge with banana and syrup, cup of tea
Cup of tea
Cheese toastie, small packet of crisps
5 quality street Blush
Cheese and tomato pasta
5 crackerbreads
Lots of water.

Ninjachicken · 10/01/2023 07:16

Morning all
trying to stay on track but I WFH and really need to work on not snacking
B: cereal
L: eggs
D: chicken biriyani
walking dogs every day and trying to add in some strength training
nervous for weigh in tomorrow. Had a friend for dinner last night so did not stick to plan as much as I would have liked
good luck everyone

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 10/01/2023 07:47

Came in under my calorie goal yesterday and did a Les mills strength class at home. Successful day 1!

Plan for the day:

B - cheese, Greek yoghurt, handful of raspberries, chia seeds, slice of toast
L - soup
D - Jamie oliver's chorizo, prawn, pepper bake.

Bodycombat class later, and if the rain stays off will try and get out for a lunchtime walk.

ImALittlePea · 10/01/2023 07:57

Thanks for the recommendations @greenspaces4peace we ended up watching episode one of Maid in Netflix - had me a little on edge but looks like a good series (hopefully the following episodes will be easier to watch though!)

And I stayed clear of the kitchen and late night chocs 🎉

@Ninjachicken snacking isn't necessarily the enemy, I find it's choosing snacks when I'm hungry that is the problem. Can you portion out some healthy snacks in pots ready to grab when you need something perhaps?

Today's meals:
Lunch - same again 😁
Dinner - bacon, pea, pepper and pesto risotto. Side of green beans.
I'll have a bowl of Greek yoghurt and berries at some point as well.
Water and tea.

buzzofthebumblebee · 10/01/2023 11:32

Another yummy dinner idea - thanks @ImALittlePea

Thread seems to be getting quiet ... hope everyone just busy back to work etc and not giving up after one bad day.

I stuck to plan yesterday. Hopefully same today.

B - small avocado on 1 slice toast (v hungry after run)
L - more cold leftover roast cauli & squash on salad with fish
D - salmon, greens & baked sweet potato.
S - apple & spoon peanut butter (if I need it - probably will!).

My running is getting my digestion geared-up too, which is a good thing. Feel much less bloated, which in turn gives me more energy, and more willpower to not eat too much. Hard getting out in the rain, but feel so better for it.

Have a good day everyone !

SW 14st
CW 14st
TW...don't want to look up as will be depressed but want to get to "merely" overweight not obese on chart to start with.
Recovering from horrid virus...very tired but back at work. Still Christmas snacks about and DC home from uni...lunch/dinner out etc. Plus not much exercise. Really want to get back to that...joined Joe Wicks complete beginners and done some of those.
Bought one of those water bottles with timings on. And Joe Wicks cook book. 😋.
Trying not to be hard on myself or get obsessed. But need to find more motivation...

takingcareofme2023 · 10/01/2023 13:43

Ok so just had a peep. 😮🥴😬. 12st gets me into overweight, 10st ok. I can't even imagine myself at 10st!!!
This is a long term project...can I even do it at my age?? Late 50s.
For now, TW =13st 7
Thankyou everyone for this lovely thread xxx

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 10/01/2023 14:21

Of course you can @takingcareofme2023 I was the same a couple of years ago. I took it slow and steady and tried to make sustainable lifestyle changes rather than going on a diet.

I've reduced portion sizes, try to keep alcohol to the weekend, exercise regularly and calorie counting makes me much more aware of the impact of different treats and food/drink on my efforts. It has been slower than I would have liked, but I've lost a couple of stone and have around 10iibs to go. I've stalled a bit recently so joined the thread to help give me a final push!

takingcareofme2023 · 10/01/2023 14:23

@WhatWouldTheDoctorDo Thank you! Xx

AutisticLegoLover · 10/01/2023 14:41

Lifestyle changes are definitely the way forward. Diets aren't sustainable but good habits are or at least stand a better chance. I used to do a loose 16:8 and found that not eating after dinner at 5/6pm was the best thing for me along with being sensible during the day. I drink water as my drink of choice anyway so increased how much I was drinking and tried to eat more fruit. I walk everywhere and that's another good habit to get into. I have to walk with not being able to drive but we could get the bus if we wanted to. I chose not to. Being sensible most of the time allows for special occasions not to be a problem. Also cutting back on heavily processed food. I still struggle with that one sometimes.

Today I had a chippy chip buttie for lunchBlush This was not planned and not something I'd normally do. I blame PMT entirely. I'll have cereal for dinner to balance things out.

Cloudberries123 · 10/01/2023 15:01

Really motivating to read your lifestyle changes AutisticLegoLover I love water and walk everywhere too, so am working on increasing those. They are the ones that come naturally so to speak.

takingcareofme2023 well done for facing the scales and the healthy weight chart! It's a sobering moment isn't it 😂 I have about 3, ideally 4 stone to lose so you're not alone in that.

I have a very good neighbour friend who is 60-something and has gone from a size 18 to a size 12 in the past few months. (Haven't asked about how much weight) She is so much healthier and feels good, as well as being more body confident. So I do think absolutely it's possible and doable. I know we've got quite an age range on this thread too.

Me today -

Breakfast - 2 boiled eggs on toast, coffee

Work snacks - water, 2 apples

Lunch - cheese sandwich, coffee

Realistically going to be a snacky afternoon and hopefully a nice hearty dinner of lamb.

Some things I'm thinking about -

  • Yes we've still got Christmas goodies but I can't use that as a free pass to buy in loads of biscuits etc. The sugary snacks need to not be a daily staple.
  • I might have bitten off more than I could chew back in the autumn with trying to do healthier + lower carb + intermittent fasting/'late breakfast' as it's now a couple of months later and I have to admit I am only doing the first one of those!

I have a very demanding job (despite pt hours atm) and I feel the lack of energy when I have carbs too low. So I will be focusing on less processed carbs from now on - as well as not just automatically reaching for a bread-based snack when I'm hungry.

Weigh-in tomorrow! No idea what to expect after last week's loss!

123ROLO · 10/01/2023 15:19

Some of the meals on here sound so healthy and nutritious!

My issue is that I'm so lazy especially for lunch and breakfast, I have recently got an airfryer, any recommendations for quick / healthy / low cal lunches I can just chuck in the airfryer? I am not a fussy eater.

I have kept to my calorie limits pretty well, but my meals are quite tragic, I had porridge and a boiled egg for tea last night as I only had 300 cals left and I just could not think what to make under 300 cals!

I have felt a bit of a swoosh of weight coming off, but I'm not going to get excited yet as I have a habit of being able to shed quite a lot quickly but then it piles back on again. It does feel different this time though. I think its because every time I do some wedding related planning, or there is discussion about my wedding, I just keep thinking to myself 'stick to the diet'.

SanFranBear · 10/01/2023 15:50

Checking in briefly... sounds like you're all doing marvellously and even one, small change can make all the difference so keep going!

I've relaxed somewhat - still sticking to my calories but instead of aiming for 800 calories a couple of times a week, it's now 1,000 so expect loss to sleep a bit... but I'm pretty happy with where I'm at and yes, I'd like to lose a little more and plan to but just trying to fix all my new habits (did relapse a little around Xmas)

We're having enchiladas for dinner and honestly, can't wait as one of my favourites!

SanFranBear · 10/01/2023 15:50

*slow a bit... although sleep I guess isn't too far off!

AutisticLegoLover · 10/01/2023 17:40

I had a big bowl of rhubarb yogurt with strawberries and raspberries for dinner and it was delicious and makes up for the chip barm at lunch. Nearly 8 miles walked today and I'm happy with that. So today:
Porridge with syrup, and tea
5 celebrations (Bounty ones)
Chip barm
Rhubarb yogurt with raspberries and strawberries
1 chocolate coin
Water

I'm not counting calories as that way madness lies for me.

RadFad · 10/01/2023 18:35

@takingcareofme2023 I also have to be 12st just to be in overweight category. It can feel like such a mountain when you have a lot to lose. I try and focus on 7lb goals and that seems to help.

Back on it today after an indulgent weekend. All birthdays etc are done now until April so hoping to keep the motivation and not splurge again as I find it tricky to refocus straight after.

Does anyone else notice terrible mood swings when trying to lose weight? I’ve been so grumpy the last couple of days. Hoping it levels out.

Smugsmaug · 10/01/2023 19:55

Hello lovely lot! Still need to catch up on all the posts.

Have been building in changes, so last week cut out junk and up’ed healthy foods but didn’t calorie count. This week, improving that more. Finding it difficult as the January blues have very much kicked in! Have been rubbish on the exercise front too. Shocked how long it’s taking me to get back into it, thought I’d be back into a proper routine with it all by now. Will keep plodding along, until it starts sticking. This week will start looking at calorie intake. And I think I need to find some new wholesome recipes, bit bored with our fall back recipes atm. Hope everyone is doing well!

FTB2022 · 10/01/2023 20:07

Hi all, so glad I found this thread! I'm committed to getting healthier this year! Currently 12st 10lb (I'm 5ft 7 so this puts me firmly in the overweight BMI!) I'm aiming to be 10st 7 by my 30th birthday in September.

Trying not to be too prescriptive and think of it as a diet as this has caused me to fail before.

I'm using my fitness pal to track calories, with an aim of 1200 calories a day. I think I've JUST stayed in that today but really not sure how it's so close!

No breakfast or snacks.
Lunch was a baked potato with beans and 25g of mature cheddar.
Dinner was chicken breast with sweet potato, bell pepper, onion and corn on the cob.

Where have I gone wrong today?!

Cloudberries123 · 10/01/2023 21:39

No that sounds fab @FTB2022 !

I'm the same in that I don't think counting calories is helpful for me. However, when the new regulations about calories on public menus came out, I did learn quite a lot. For example, I think I was vastly underestimating how much energy was in something like a slice of cake - almost as much as a meal. So for me it was educational. But now that I know a bit more, I don't track. I try to focus on nutrition as that's helpful for me.

@Smugsmaug Sounds like you're doing basically the right things! And whenever I'm in a cooking rut I go on something like BBC Good Food and just click around. Never had a bad recipe from them yet 😊

Night all, from me and the chocolate pudding I just ate. Weighing in tomorrow!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 10/01/2023 22:27

@123ROLO can't help with air fryer lunches, but we have soup a lot for lunch. Tend to make a bit batch for the freezer so it's quick and easy. Boiled egg and toast are a staple breakfast here (some people do them in the air fryer!).

We use pinch of nom books a lot for midweek meals. They have loads that come in around 300 cals and I think there's some air fryer recipes on their website.

Weatherwax13 · 11/01/2023 03:15

Did my Wednesday weigh. Second week.
Only lost 200g. I'm peering suspiciously at the scales however as I can definitely see a very slight difference to my jawline and waistband. Plus I just noticed my wedding band went on more easily than usual .
SW 88.8kg
CW 85.6kg
TW 76kg
Plan is to be far more stringent with avoiding carbs this week

Fara22 · 11/01/2023 07:17

Weigh in this morning and no change, which I think is reflective of the eating during jet lag week! Feeling much better now though, so no more excuses.

Today I'm booked into aqua aerobics. And Pilates on Friday. I've also organised to go for a walk with a friend. BUT I know the main difference needs to be what I eat.

I hope everyone has a positive weigh in day!

Cloudberries123 · 11/01/2023 07:51

Woohoo hit my mini goal!

SW: 100.4kg
CW: 95.5kg
Next mini goal - stay at 95 or under for the long term!
