Hello!!! welcome to our new home let the virtual house warming begin

OP posts:
PuffTheMagicDragon · 18/01/2005 10:05

Thanks MrsBigD, I'm having a "wobble" today (although I wobble less than I used to ) - I've lost so much already and I can't quite believe I've still got to lose that AND MORE!

How did I let my weight get so out of hand?

I sort of know the answer - as well as putting on a lot of weight in pregnancy, I stopped thinking about what I was eating - any old rubbish would do that required minimum effort. Also, forgetting to eat breakfast and sometimes lunch was disastrous as I'd spend the evening with my head in bag after bag of crisps etc.

I've become very aware of what a fine balance there is between losing/staying the same/gaining weight.

Evesmama · 18/01/2005 10:18

thankyou for the warm welcome everyone
i think its great the amount some of you have lsot, it proves we can do it if we try[smile
i had a good day yesterday and me and dd(21 months) did my cindy crawford vid!!!!hilarious..not just be wobbling about but dd was putting her heart and soul into it..we couldnt stop giggling!.me and dp spoke about eating and health most of last night and how we feel, it was great, something in common at last for the two of us!!and not babytalk.
started today well too, ina good frame of mind!..had clusters for breakfast and a banana..already made healthy spag bol for dinner and...wait for it.............I DIDNT HAVE ONE PEICE OF CHOCOLATE YESTERDAY!!!!even though i went into supermarket! i honestly cant rememeber the last time, i didnt have chocolate in a day!!

LunarSea · 18/01/2005 10:24

I know what you mean about the fine balance Puff - I'm really not doing anything much different now to what I did before, except for cutting out wheat, and it's making a net difference of about 2lbs a week (i.e. I'm losing each week on average, rather than gaining).

I think the average daily requirements stuff which they print on packets of everything is very misleading too - there's never anything which says how much variation around those averages there is, so it gives the impression that that's the figure for everyone, which obviously isn't true. Some people can eat loads, do nothing, and never gain weight, others can exercise, eat carefully and gain at the drop of a hat (like me!). I do try to think positively about it though - like thinking that if I was a car everyone would be raving about how many miles I could do on not much fuel, while some of those lean but always eating types would be being decried as gas guzzlers - or that I'm well designed to be able to survive a famine (not really very useful in 21st century England!).

I know Puff, I have 5 stones to go too and sometimes my target weight just feels impossibly far away. I think it's a bit like walking a tightrope over the Grand Canyon in that you just have to keep looking straight ahead and don't look down (that's how I managed to cross the Grand Canyon anyway ). To be honest I'm finding that just having a better (low gi) diet is its own reward even if I didn't lose weight as I do feel much better for it.

Congrats on the chocolate front EM, I had to give up chocolate completely as I couldn't just have a little bit, and it took 3 very irritable weeks to get over the withdrawal symptoms.

handlemecarefully · 18/01/2005 10:41

Haven't posted for a week. Have I missed much?

Weigh in today and have lost 1lb. This is after 3 weeks of staying the same so it's a small victory. Actually I am not sure I deserve to loose even that 1lb since I have been eating quite a lot (albeit healthy low fat stuff)....

monkeygirl · 18/01/2005 10:45

Puff - losing 3 stones so far is just brilliant. I am very . Just think that that achievement alone has probably done wonders for your health and it must be coming off somewhere! It's not too much less than the combined weight of my dd1 and ds1!

Evesmama - well done on no choc! I tried to kid myself that I would just have a bit a day but I too have had to (mostly) give it up. Now that I haven't had it for a week or so I'm already losing the craving - but totm at the end of the month so we shall see...

For all of you on the GI diet, can you help me with a query please. The Tescos guide always seems to say have basmati rice but that seems to be a 'yellow' food whilst brown rice is 'green' - isn't that better and is wholegrain rice even better (prefer it to brown which I think it's like eating chopped up bit of cardboard)?

handlemecarefully · 18/01/2005 10:46

Actually I feel quite skinny today. Watched a voyeuristic documentary yesterday 'Chubby Chasers' about men with a fat fetish who fancy really big women. There were some 30 stone + women on there who were being revered as objects of desire, so by comparison I am a wisp of a thing

monkeygirl · 18/01/2005 10:53

Yes - and that's why I liked holidaying in the US (in my former life) - I used to feel quite Kate Moss-ish.

Evesmama · 18/01/2005 10:58

thanks girls
i wanted to watch chubby chasers last night but dp but some crap film on..thought it would either shock me or make me feel better

bran · 18/01/2005 11:09

MG I tend to mix half and half brown with basmati rice which lightens the texture of it. You can also get brown basmati, which is much tastier than normal brown rice. I've never heard of wholemeal rice, what's the difference between that and brown?

PuffTheMagicDragon · 18/01/2005 11:13

Well done Evesmama on avoiding the choc!

Thanks everyone for the pep talk - I needed that. I like the walking a tightrope analogy - its a good one.

Monkeygirl, I know what you mean about rice. My Rick Gallop book (The GI Giet) says "easy cook" rice is a red (avoid) food, but basmati, wild AND brown and long grain rice are green (good GI) foods.

I've looked at the food database on the Glycemic Index and it appears that its the stickier style of rice which needs to be avoided. I've been eating all the types Rick Gallop says are ok and have been losing weight steadily.

HTH

monkeygirl · 18/01/2005 11:15

Bran I have not the foggiest , all I know is that I prefer the taste. I'm sure it's got nothing to do with the bread equivalent but I always have it in my mind that brown bread is just dyed white bread and that wholemeal is the 'real' deal.

I may go on a hunt for some brown basmati then and have a taste. Thanks.

Evesmama · 18/01/2005 11:16

thanks hun!
but i am hungry today..i've just eat my lunch! as have given dd hers! and really fancy something sweet now so have poured myself a big glass on sugar free lemon and lime cordia..hopefully that will hit the spot! or maybe a little pack of dd's raiains?..are raisins ok or are they full of sugar?

PuffTheMagicDragon · 18/01/2005 11:18

I eat some raisins everyday - 2 of those little boxes. They're good in moderation and I find them helpful when I need sonething sweet.

Flossam · 18/01/2005 11:19

HI everyone! I think the problem I have is that not that long ago (about a year and a half ago to be exact) I was one of those people who could eat what they wanted without putting anything on. Not anymore

PTMD, you have done SO WELL! How long has it taken for you to loose that amount?

monkeygirl · 18/01/2005 11:19

Puff - thanks for the link - have had a quick skiim and the q&a looks helpful. May also have to get the Gallop book (despite the ridiculous name!) - oops - apologies to all Gallops out there!

Evesmama · 18/01/2005 11:20

thats what i though! at least im getting natural sugars instead of choccy bars

oh...funniest thing ever happend this morning

Flossam · 18/01/2005 11:23

Evesmama, I found in boots they have recently started doing packets of dried fruits, apples, orange flavour cranberries (?!), raisons and sultanas. They satisfied even my sweet tooth a few weeks ago... untill I went to Tescos and found the doughnuts Don't tescos do the best doughnuts.... Help I'm going there later and I'm starving! Will have to have a good lunch first I think!

monkeygirl · 18/01/2005 11:23

EM - sweet cravings will dissipate a bit as you go on. I was a choccy addict and have finally been able to control it by just not having it in the house! Also like the Syrup Oats So Simple which satisfies sometimes. Eating a sour apple for some reason also helps sometimes.

Flossam - I've never been able to eat what I wanted without suffering .

Flossam · 18/01/2005 11:25

MonkeyGirl, poor you. I am finding it hard at the moment to accept I really can't eat these things. Also trying to shout down the little voice in my mind telling me that once I loose the weight I can go back on them again

monkeygirl · 18/01/2005 11:25

em -what happened? sorry am now doing 1 handed typing thanks to baby...

monkeygirl · 18/01/2005 11:27

flossam - maybe upping your activity might help?? apologies if you already do loads...

Evesmama · 18/01/2005 11:31

decided to do the excersize vid like i said, started it yesterday with dd and it was a right giggle as she was trying to join in...any way, started doing i t again today.
dd got into position, really serious face on her and starts doing the bends and stretches..when it came to the press ups, she wiggled under me until her head was upside down under my head and started laughing at me, then when i was doing the sit ups shes wandered off to play only to come back..plonk herself down on my belly and proceed to shout one..two..three..four..six(i got one free as she always misses five out)!!!!!!!!!!
i collapsed(through laughing and sheer unfitness, it was if she was saying..come on mum, you can do it, shes a proper little personal trainer and at only 21 months!!!

monkeygirl · 18/01/2005 11:35
