Hi everyone. New thread as promised. A little later than planned but I'm blaming celebrating too much last night.
I wish I could say it was a good start but I'm feeding my hangover today so looks like I'm going to start tomorrow.
Is everyone feeling motivated?

Hi girls! I've been away with work for a few days and have seriously gone off-plan ) and now have to get back on before I start liking the world of junk food too much! (think Crispy cream donuts/cream-cheese and smoked salmon filled bagels/cream eggs/millie's cookies - ie, the whole foodcourt of London Euston consumed over 2 days). Only lost 1 1b this week (before binge), so quite disappointed, but at least it's a loss! Will have a read through tomorrow and catch up on everyone's news

lurcherlass · 26/01/2008 13:09

Nikki, I fancy making the carrot cake, can you tell me is 11 syns per slice, if so how many slices do they suggest? Not 11 syns for the whole cake? {dead hopeful face)

Shhhh · 26/01/2008 13:40

lurcherlass, i guessing its per whole cake so portion it accordingly...

ie half cake would be 5.5, quarter would be 2.5 approx etc...

Lurcherlass, thanks for the receipe . BTW a cup of sweetner..? what is classed as a cup..?????!

saselm · 26/01/2008 15:18

hi all
i seem to be losing only one pound a week no matter how good i am i usually have up to 15 syns a day and 2 hb and 2ha just wondered if any one has a way of speeding up their weight loss ie only eating free foods or sticking to a certain day. i also do an exercise video 4 times a week walk my dog or should i say he walks me and i take metformin for pcos which is suppose to make you lose wieght. any tips greatfully recieved
p.s sorry for the rant

lurcherlass · 26/01/2008 16:34

Well I have got a set of little plastic scoops and they say CUP or HALF CUP etc.. My Nan used to make something similar and she always used one of those china tea cups. I just had a look at my CUP scoop and it also has on it 60ml. It looks like loads when you scoop it out of the jar (I used Canderel) but it was just the right sweetness when it was cooked. Its so quick, I'd suggest you make one and see if you've got it sweet enough. I would add one word of warning, the Allbran certianly got me moving...

sugarlumps · 26/01/2008 16:50

hey saselm, have you tried eating lots of speed foods? thats what im doing this week as i only lost half a pund last week - due to a major blow out on the sat - and it seems to be working so far! i've just put a huge pot of my tomatoe concoction on the stove
1 tin chopped toms
1 small tin butter beans
2 chopped garlic cloves
half a small chopped corgette
tad of chopped onion
handful of sweetcorn
and half a bag of quorn pieces
its really nice on a jaket potato or with pasta mixed in, and is totally free on a green day! butter beans are super speed foods as is the quorn i think the toms are too. and its also high in fibre.

saselm · 26/01/2008 17:42

hi thanks for that i quite often have a vege chilli whch dh also likes
onions
peppers
mushrooms
chilli
garlic
kidney beans
bake beans
tinned chopped tomatoes
and rice
all made up in a pan and i sometimes add quorn meatballs so either syn free or 2 syns
but it makes enough for four so i always freeze some.
also i have swede and carrot mash instead of potato on red days so i still feel like i am having mash.
i always search online for a new recipe a week so dh and i dont get bored then just add meat or potatoes for him.
and still only lose a pound a week

Not tried the satay but we had the blck bean beef last week, was lovely.

Christie, not tried the quorn pieces yet, dh isn't keen.

We're having beef curry tonight, yum.

The kids are having cottage pie

Can some of you girls do me a favour? I check the book for snack a jacks (sour cream & sweet chilli flavour) & one of the books say 6.0 syns fot the 28g bag of mini bites. However, the calculator on the SW website says 1.5 syns I also have a diff bag of sweet chilli things, by KING that aren't on the site, but done on the calculator work out at 1syn

If I write down the info here can some of you clever clogs work it out & see what I'm doing wrong?? Please????

SNACK A JACKS: 28g bag

Energy: 115kcal
Protein: 1.8g
Carb: 21.8g
Fat: 2.2g (sats:0.3g)

KINGS VELVET CRUNCH:

Energy: 81kcal
Protein: 0.3g
Carb: 15.5g
Fat: 1.9g (sats: 0.2g) 20g bag

Thanks ladies...I need a chilli hit tonight...

nikkid21 · 26/01/2008 19:17

Are those values per bag? The syn calculator need the values per 100G and then the porton size ie 28g in the last box at the end.

Hope that makes sense as am being very norty and am most way down a bottle of red

nikkid21 · 26/01/2008 19:19

Lurcherlass - i've always counted the WHOLE carrot cake as 11 syns and 2heB

Fizzylemonade · 26/01/2008 19:24

Firefly - the online calculator is expecting you to put in the info for 100g and then asks you how much is the portion, you seem to be entering what the BAG is worth ie 28g is 115kcal etc. The computer thinks that this is 100g and you are only eating 1/4 of the bag that is why the syn value is coming in at 1 1/2 syns.

I joined SW last week, my husband is a bit of a mathmatics genius and has worked out that using the on-line calculator it does not matter what you put in ONLY THE CALORIES - try it! It is mad, you can increase the fat content, lower protein, nothing changes the final syn calculation except the calories.

So it is basically:

Cals per 100g x Portion size (g)
--------
2000

if you have 411 cals per 100g (ie your bag of snack a jacks) times this by how much of it you will eat ie 28g bag so 28g divide by 2000.

411 x 28
-----
2000

gives you 5.75 sys which they round up to 6 syns, in absoulte basic terms it's 5 syns per 100 kcal in 100g.

Fizzylemonade · 26/01/2008 19:25

Sorry crossed posts with 2 others in my slow typing !!!

Fireflyfairy2 · 26/01/2008 19:28

Thankyou very much ladies...and you both have spotted exactly what I was doing wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey fizzy.. your dh sounds like my kinda man.... He also sounds a bit like my dh.. always coming up with solutions, even when there is no problem!!

Fizzylemonade · 26/01/2008 19:40

I find that the formula makes it easy, no logging onto the internet, putting the blooming password in and clicking onto the calculator, entering all the details when all you need is the kcals.

It also means I can pick something up in the supermarket and know instantly what the syn value is.

Check what I said though re the on-line calculator, I have just increased the fat content to 72.9g per 100 for your snack a jacks and again the same answer of 6 syns.

My mate has been to slimming world for years and says they are very guarded in how they work stuff out unlike weight watchers who are very open. So to know that the syn value of something is purely based on KCALS is indeed interesting.

andyrobo237 · 26/01/2008 19:59

Fizzy - that is interesting! I have previously done WW and you can find the formula for points on many websites - never searched for the SW syns one (will do next though!). I find it interesting that WW has a plan that is very similar to the SW one - based around eating hogh density low cal food - all the veg, salad, fruit, etc and then adding meat or pasta/potatoes.
I am not sure how this 'diet' works and hav read all the stuff on the web, but it doesnt make sense to me! I know it works as there are hundreds of thousnds of people who have lsot loads of weight and kept it off, but we are all different, and what suits some, doesnt suit others! I think this diet doesnt allow you to 'cheat' - whereas others do to a certain extent.

I know for me, half a pound a week or a maintain is ok, as it will eventually come off, and I would prefer to have a few treats along the way and get to target slower (well who am I kidding - a quick fix would be fab, but it all goes back on again!). So here I go, slowly chipping away at it, next christmas should see me get near to target! My size 16 jeans are getting looser on me, so hopefully will need to buy a 14 by easter - my aim!

Hope you have all had a fab weekend, and Diege you have recovered from the excesses of being away with work!

misdee · 26/01/2008 20:05

iam aviding the scales. i am a bit of a seriel-weigher, and generally hop on and off all week. but am on my second day on no weighing, and trying to relax a bit.

i am exercising, slowly admittingly, but getting there. i got my race pack through this morning for british heart foundation 'hearts first jog' on the 24th february. i also signed up for race for life on the 8th june. so am hoping this keeps me more focused on losing weight and on exercising.

just giving page is here

Fireflyfairy2 · 26/01/2008 21:42

misdee, I was reading your running thread earlier, it inspired me!!

My sister runs regularly so she is taking me out on tour tomorrow morning She has promised she will go easy on me, walk for 5 mins then jog for 2 mins. She knows how easy I get angry when I feel out of my depth (she found this to her cost when she told me we were going a 3 mile run one sunday morning (I was cycling!) & we ended up going 7 miles... I got stuck in the middle of a hill & we had a big row )

I see you have signed up for the race for life, so have we this year & my sister has signed us up for a 1/2 marathon or something.. I think I am allowed to walk it!!!

sugarlumps · 27/01/2008 08:48

Morning Thanks ANDY, yes I've got over binge, though only just. Even though I did enjoy the choice of goodies, I've found that rubbish foods seem to make me feel really ill now, and I don't get as much enjoyment over them as I did!
Am going to try out a lentil and vegetable bake today (will make it up as I'm going along), the plan being to make enough for next week's work dinners!
Love reading through everyone's news - some great recipes there, and very inspirational weight losses! Think I am destined to be a pound a week girl, and am going to STOP weighing myself every day!

Diege · 27/01/2008 09:56

Wow, some great recipes there SUGARLUMPS!! Will print them out and try some next week

lurcherlass · 27/01/2008 13:53

I've just eaten my latest SW rice pud (on green). I've made it loads of different ways, the way they tell you is mostly with water which is pretty tasteless. I made mine with soya milk, which I have in cereal anyway. I used 2 ozs pudding rice and put it in the oven with 350ml unsweetened soya milk (a whole days HE milk allowance). Towards the end of cooking, I stirred the canderel in and put it back for 15-20 mins. The soya milk is a bit creamier than semi-skimmed milk. I tried it with oat milk, but that seemed watery. This is the best one yet and I'm pleasantly stuffed...yes I ate the whole thing

sugarlumps · 27/01/2008 13:58

good for you lurcher! im not a big fan of rice pud but my lad loves it so i may give it a go! im just making the syn free bombay bhajis from the 100 green recipies book, they smell absolutely gorgeous and are maiking me hungry...even though i have just had my lunch ahh well, at least they are syn free!
