HAPPY NEW YEAR 2022 🍾 🎊 🎉 🍾

Fresh new year, fresh new start, fresh new habits. Jump right in to reset & refresh to become a healthier version of yourself.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fasting and eat twice a day.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

Morning all! Well done on some great losses! Looks like a good start to January.

Wow for me showed 3lb off. Probably because I weighed at the highest possible time. But it's good news all the same.

Plan for today is
Meal one tomato and basil pasta with salad. Strawberry low fat yogurt
Meal two Louisiana red rice with prawns.
Snacks I have a banana in my bag, and an apple fruit bar thingy.
Still aiming to get my 2 litres of fluids in, the big bottle on my desk says I'm an hour behind schedule but the cup of tea this morning was more inviting!! Gosh it's cold today!!!

PopcornFiend · 05/01/2022 11:58

Hello all!

Day 1 for me yesterday, I ate:

Breakfast - 1 cup instant coffee with dash of semi skimmed milk and 1 Stevia sweetener (which was vile! So I’m going to have to allow myself 1 tsp sugar in my coffee I think)

Lunch: Slimfast banana shake

Dinner: Homemade coconut fish curry with peppers & tomatoes, 1 tbsp basmati rice (no naan!)

Snacks: 1 large banana, handful blueberries

Drinks: 150ml ginger ale, water 1ltr total.. need to increase this I know.

Total calories approx 1100 so I’m pleased with that, also first day of no booze.. I have been drinking every evening for a good year now, not bingeing but a couple glasses of wine or a couple g&t’s, so really not good for me.

Woke up this morning feeling definitely better, no hint of grogginess. Have had 1 cup of coffee this morning and about to make a slimfast shake.

I won’t be weighing until next wed as I only just started.. but starting at 177lbs and looking to get down to 140lbs. I’d love to lose 2LB per week if poss.

LaBelleSausage · 05/01/2022 11:59

No movement for me. Kids and I are have been stuck in with covid and so have been eating constant carbs/baking too much.

Oh well, at least it's not a gain

8stone13 · 05/01/2022 12:00

@PopcornFiend Coconut fish curry sounds amazing - could you share the recipe? Smile

SunshineCake1 · 05/01/2022 12:11

Everyone is doing so well Star. I love how all our little wins are quite different for each of us but we all get it.

Good plan @DownUdderer. Just wondering about chilli flakes on your houmous? Apparently chilli kicks off metabolism.

Disappointing as it may have been @Backofthenet20 it is a good visual you have now when you think you need a snack. Imagine that 4 getting bigger on the scales.

Well done on your swim @Chimchimcharoo. Put the treats out of your head. They are just food. Have one of you want one and don't give them power.

Very positive @@129orbust well done.

Great start @Allotment123. Keep it up.

@swampytiggaa well done on your loss.

Good loss @Smarshian.

I'm really pleased for you @TheRealHousewife that you have lost. .

Well done on your loss @8stone13 be sure to build on that now and tap dancing sounds fun! How about buying a smart notebook and writing all the stories you can remember about your Tiller Girl?

That's a fabulous loss @ShoppingBasket. Well done.

Good plan for mental health reasons @Crazzzycat.

We say a staying the same is still a win @flower3305 as you haven't gone up.

Good loss @Lupinspotato.

Welcome @2022wontbecrap and it won't be crap as you have us and you've made the start. Good luck.

Well done @Rshard. Enjoy your walk.

@galacticpixels well done and good luck.

Your time will come @Purplepeopleeaterz and there are some gentle exercises to start with.

Still a win @cherrytree63.

I went for a run this morning, 7.07km. Decided a month without weighing was too much if I was going up so got on.
11 stone 11.2. Felt a bit downhearted as thought I'd had gone up or at best stayed the same. Checked back and I and weighed on January 1st to see a true stat weight.
January 1st 12 stone 0.4
Today 11 stone 2.3 so 3.2lb loss. Really pleased and it has boosted me to keep going with main meal at lunch and smaller tea.

Dh and I went shopping and I resisted crisps, chocolate and biscuits. Partly as we have loads but mainly as I don't want to bring any more into the house. I bought extra vegetables and some lovely garlic and herb prawns.

2022km in 2022 challenge
7.07km run
2.4km walk.

SunshineCake1 · 05/01/2022 12:13

Lots of cross posts for me and so I don't take up too much I'll say well done and keep going!

I do intermittent fasting and do 20:4 mostly with the odd 19:5 and 18:6 maybe twice a week.

DontWantTheRivalry · 05/01/2022 12:27

Hello everyone,

I weighed myself yesterday to get my base weight and I’m 67.4kg and in looking to lose about a stone.

Yesterday I had a funny turn at work, felt really faint and had to sit down with my legs between my legs. Thankfully I work in a hospital so lots of people to hand and I naturally got asked if I’d eaten that day.

I told them what I’d had, a bowl of cereal and a tin of soup of lunch (it happened at about 4pm) and I got told it is not enough.

I explained about wanting to lose weight and she said that cutting my intake by 50% isn’t the way to do it. I got sent home with instructions to eat something with sugar or carbs in it so I ate 3 custard cream biscuits.

It’s so hard knowing what is, or isn’t okay.

My husband told me that I have to eat 300 calories less than my ‘allowance’ regularly in order to just lose a pound. I had never heard of this and don’t know if it’s true?!

I had some soup for lunch again today but this time I had two slices of dry bread with it to ensure I was getting some Carbs.

I know bread is pretty bad though Sad

Crazzzycat · 05/01/2022 13:12

@DontWantTheRivalry sorry to hear you weren’t well yesterday. That must have been scary. Your husband is correct that you need about a 300 calorie deficit to lose a pound a week.

You may find it helpful to work out your TDEE, which is the number of calories you are likely to burn on an average day. Then remove around 500 calories to find out what number of calories is a reasonable amount to aim for, so that you lose weight but not end up hurting yourself. Here’s a link to one of these calculators:

tdeecalculator.net/

Last year when I started losing weight, I followed the NHS advice and aimed for 1400 calories a day. That turned out to be a big mistake, as that number is for “the average woman”. It turned out that was not a good number to aim for for someone who is 5”10, overweight and does a lot of exercise. I felt rubbish! Then I worked out what myTDEE was (I think it was close to 3000 calories 😬), increased what I ate and I lost weight faster than I did before on that measly 1400 calorie allowance 🤷‍♀️

So don’t cut your calories too much. It won’t necessarily make you lose weight any faster, but will definitely make it less likely that you’ll stick to your diet.

justjuggling · 05/01/2022 13:19

Does everyone weigh in on Wednesdays?

Start weight (2/1) 16.6
Today 16.2

Am happy with that but aware it’s just the first week ‘flush out’!

Actually went for a walk this morning. Only 30 minutes but it’s the first exercise/activity I’ve done in months so I’m pleased to have achieved it!

I love how everyone is doing their own thing, knowing what works for them! We can do this!

DontWantTheRivalry · 05/01/2022 13:35

Thanks for that link crazycat - I went on the link and my screenshot is the result I got.

So how many calories a day do you think I should aim for?

Goodness such a lot of post since this morning … mostly saying you’ve lost! That’s fantastic. Take that thought and visualise how you’ll feel this time next week when a bit more has gone to the curb 👍

Posted a pic of lunch that came in at 520 calories. Very tasty and enjoyable.

Let us know how you get on @8stone13 with the tap dancing.

Thank you @SunshineCake1. …I just need to repeat it week on week rather than yo-yo like I have been 🤞 I’ve done little tweaks like taking my coffee (instant) black. To add milk it is 50ml which is about 30 cals. Unwittingly I’ve been drinking my cals when I would much prefer to gobble them up 😬

Great thread ladies, well done on all your successes and taking the time to share them. Very inspiring 👍👏 🏅

@DontWantTheRivalry, I’d start around 1500 and see how you feel on that. As far as possible use those calories on food that keeps you feeling fuller for longer, especially food that is high in fibre or protein.

You mention you had cereal in the morning. Was it something high in fibre, or one of the more sugary varieties? That can make a big difference to your glucose levels, and how soon you feel hungry or faint afterwards.

DontWantTheRivalry · 05/01/2022 13:58

Coco Pops Grin

I only have them because they’re what’s in the house because it’s what my children eat Grin

Can you recommend anything that may be better??

Also, are there any good Aps for tracking calorie intake?

I really want to take it seriously this time.

Rshard · 05/01/2022 14:27

So busy on here!

Your mention of fruit tea rather than the usual coffee and cake really resonated with me fireworkparrot, such a lot of this is about breaking habits and associations isn’t it?

Smarshian · 05/01/2022 14:30

@DontWantTheRivalry MyFitnessPal is great for tracking calories.

Went for a lunchtime run as the sun has come out. Trying to run 75k this month, on 15 so far.
Meetings all afternoon but it’s keeping me busy and away from the left over Christmas treats.

goodjoujou · 05/01/2022 14:31

Sounds like everyone has made a great start! I forgot to weigh myself today so will venture onto the scales tomorrow AM. I feel that I’m looking better-less muffin over top of tights when I got ready for work this morning so (chocolate) fingers crossed. Have had minuscule lunch of celery tomatoes and leftover trout pate and then low fat veggie curry tonight.

Crazzzycat · 05/01/2022 14:36

@DontWantTheRivalry, for a breakfast that doesn’t require any effort in the morning, I like overnight oats

Put 50 grams of oats in a bowl with 100 ml of milk, add some frozen berries (optional) and a good pinch of cinnamon (also optional). Leave in the fridge overnight and your breakfast is ready in the morning. You can add a little bit of sugar if you like, but I don’t find it needs it really if you add some frozen berries.

According to the internet, 1 serving of coco pops has 1 gram of fibre and 2 grams of protein (plus a fair bit of sugar).

Overnight oats, if made with a handful of frozen raspberries, has 9 grams of fibre and 12 grams of protein. That’s a big difference.

For tracking calories, a lot of people use My Fitness Pal, or NutraCheck. I use the app that comes with my FitBit, so I can’t really comment on other apps, but may be someone else on this thread uses these apps and can share their experiences?

Lupinspotato · 05/01/2022 14:38

@DontWantTheRivalry I’ve been there with eating the coco pops and feeling lightheaded in the past. If I have breakfast I usually have porridge. I hope you’re feeling better now anyway.

For apps, I have used MyFitnessPal in the past which was good because it was free, but I now use the nutracheck App. It’s not free but seems to be uk based so I prefer it to MFP. I think they do free trials anyway.

TheRealHousewife · 05/01/2022 14:50

@Crazzzycat that’s a great example of a food comparison 👍.

8stone13 · 05/01/2022 15:23

@PopcornFiend Thanks - that looks great - I love Good Food recipes. I used to subscribe to the magazine. Might have to do that again, it gave me lots of inspiration & they usually have an offer on in January 🤔

DontWantTheRivalry · 05/01/2022 16:00

Thanks for that breakfast suggestion crazycat - it sounds delicious.

Do you warm it up in the microwave before eating, or do you just have it fresh from the fridge??

PopcornFiend · 05/01/2022 16:03

@8stone13 yes it’s a nice recipe. I added in some chopped peppers, and used korma paste instead of tikka (my kids like it mild!) - but after I’d dished theirs up I stirred some chopped chillis through mine so it had a bit more punch!
Not the lightest calorie dish thanks to the coconut milk and curry paste, but I had a small portion and very little rice so I think it came in around 550/580 cals.

Crazzzycat · 05/01/2022 16:07

I have it cold @DontWantTheRivalry, usually for lunch as I don’t really eat breakfast. If you make it in a Tupperware box, it has the added bonus of being easy to take into work.
