Sugar addicts anonymous

My name is Fhee and I am a sugar addict. It has been approximately 13 hours since I ate a nutritionally void sweet treat. I am going cold turkey on:
Biscuits
Cake
Chocolate

I am not going low carb, but also out are any non-sweet treats that have the same impact on blood sugar, i.e. crisps.

I will not be cutting out fresh fruit. That’s just silly.

Anyone one else need some accountability?

Morning @Fhee

My plan is to start tomorrow. Sugar is my downfall, I have been eating ridiculous amounts of chocolate and cake.

Do you have much weight to lose?

Alysskea · 28/12/2021 11:27

Very much belonging here!

Fhee · 28/12/2021 11:27

I have gained 2 stone over the last three years, and it has been accelerating over the last six months. I’d like to get rid of all of it, but the last half stone has taken me to heavier than I have ever been before so that is my first goal 😬

I'm about three stone overweight but will be tackling it half a stone at a time.

I will be weighing myself tomorrow, I need to prepare mentally for this 😂

LadyCampanulaTottington · 28/12/2021 11:59

I tried that OP but addiction transference meant that I overate other carbs instead. The only way for me to control it is low carb without and fake replacements.

LadyCampanulaTottington · 28/12/2021 12:00

Any*

Snowraingain · 28/12/2021 12:05

Four stone to lose. Sugar is an addiction.
I just need to get a grip and eat properly.

Cherchez · 28/12/2021 12:07

@Snowraingain I need to learn to eat properly too. I'm not fussed about savoury food, I rarely overeat.

Chocolate however, I know no boundaries. I can just keep going and going.

FLOWER1983 · 28/12/2021 12:10

I am planning to start tomorrow, 30 days of no chocolate, no biscuits/cakes, no crisps. I am trying to have mostly foods with less then 5g of sugar per 100g

Buttercup72 · 28/12/2021 12:15

Yeast overgrowth in the bowels can cause sugar cravings so it might be worth looking into this? Herbal treatments can resolve and might help reduce the cravings - the more sugar you eat the more likely you are to get a yeast/thrush overgrowth, so it’s a viscous circle.

Cherchez · 28/12/2021 12:39

@FLOWER1983 I like the sound of 30 days chocolate/cakes free.

Im going to start tomorrow too.

What kind of herbal treatments?

I have some probiotics I bought a while ago, I can’t remember why. Maybe I’ll start taking them again.

Oil of oregano is good for yeast/bacterial overgrowth. I used these ones:

www.amazon.co.uk/Zane-Softgels-Concentration-Essential-Carvacrol/dp/B01LZ7BU8F?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Probiotics are also really good - but if you have a bad overgrowth it will be very slow progress without the oregano to kill of the overgrowth. I think it’s best to do both, and just keep the probiotics up - forever ideally. I drink kefir milkshakes - just from Morrison’s, and that has a good mix of probiotics in it.

GnusSitOnCanoes · 28/12/2021 18:12

@FLOWER1983 the 30-day break sounds like an ideal first step for me too. I feel awful, enormous, and just need to stop.

Fhee · 28/12/2021 18:29

I survived my first challenge - a 4-year-old’s birthday party. Lots of standing around surrounded by sugary shite 😄 but I managed it.

Cherchez · 28/12/2021 18:33

Well done @Fhee, that was quite a challenge for your first day. You did good 😂

MadMadMadamMim · 28/12/2021 18:34

I'm planning on starting 4 Jan. (That's when I'm back at work). I am an utter sugar/carb addict and I need to stop.

But at the moment the house is still full of stuff, and we've got New Year to come...

Devilmakes3 · 28/12/2021 18:37

Yes I’m in I did a 30 day alcohol free one a couple of months back and it can completely reset my attitude to alcohol. I am going to try 30 days sugar free from new year.

heelforheelandtoefortoe · 28/12/2021 19:03

I do not think it is possible to go cold turkey on chocolate.

What is one meant to do instead for the sugar cravings?

Surely it is better to cut down rather than cut out?

I do wish it was easy to go cold turkey though!

Fhee · 28/12/2021 19:55

I can’t do anything other than cold turkey. It’s hard, but easier than cutting down, if I start eating sugar I crave it throughout the day. If I don’t have any I feel hungry but it doesn’t become compulsive.

Stomachpains · 28/12/2021 22:17

30 days of no chocolate/sweets, no biscuits/cakes & no crisps sounds exactly like what I need too. I will join starting 1st Jan.

HelloViroids · 28/12/2021 22:35

Just place marking - I desperately need to do this but don’t feel I can until after New Year. I had gestational diabetes last year and managed my sugars excellently, so I know I can do it - it just seems impossible when it’s for the benefit of me rather than a baby inside me!

PeppaPigWorld · 28/12/2021 22:42

I'd like to join too, but I'm starting on New Year's Day. I'm not looking forward to it but I agree that cutting out completely is easier than cutting down.

My plan is to get to my target weight and and then eventually gradually reintroduce sweet things (but in more moderation than now). Have you heard of the s diet? You can have the things you like on Saturdays, Sundays and Special Occasions. I think that will be my long-term plan.

Snowraingain · 28/12/2021 22:52

Starting tomorrow. I eat some much crap now I don’t even taste it!
Enough!!

2toastornot2toast · 28/12/2021 23:04

Starting new years day with my 30 days no choc, biscuits cakes. If I cut down I crave it, if I dont have it for a while it tastes strange when I do.
2022 is the year of change!
