Sugar addicts anonymous

My name is Fhee and I am a sugar addict. It has been approximately 13 hours since I ate a nutritionally void sweet treat. I am going cold turkey on:
Biscuits
Cake
Chocolate

I am not going low carb, but also out are any non-sweet treats that have the same impact on blood sugar, i.e. crisps.

I will not be cutting out fresh fruit. That’s just silly.

Anyone one else need some accountability?

@Ruralbliss I’m trying to avoid the urge to now just say fuck it and eat anything I can find for the rest of the evening! 🙈 did do 2 days before the lapse…I got too excited too (at finding the secret stash) and forgot

seething1234 · 04/01/2022 22:21

I'm using Zero app for intermittent fasting, it really stops me from binging in the evenings, which is when I eat all my crap

Mwnci123 · 05/01/2022 22:46

Day 5. Really miss cakes and donuts. Otherwise ok and shifted a couple of pounds of Christmas weight gain.

Thinking about Welsh cakes and Krispy creme Nutella donuts a lot.

Anyone else hanging on in there but day dreaming about confectionary?

Welcomebacksummer · 05/01/2022 23:00

Well done 👏🏻 I am day 6- I think? Since before New Years anyway, feels like forever. I have been managing with sugar free jelly and found some Maryland sugar free cookies in Tesco. Not ideal, but 100 x better than the constant grazing on chocolate all day. Hope everyone is doing well!!

seething1234 · 05/01/2022 23:14

I'm on day 3 I think... doing okish. I had a mini scone with jam and cream so obviously thats not good but i haven't had any sweets, chocolates or biscuits . I was cleaning my 5 year old's school bag out and a packet of chocolate buttons was at the bottom. They are one of my favorites but I resisted temptation. Next week I think I'll step it up a gear and start using my fitness pal

Mwnci123 · 05/01/2022 23:29

Well done welcome! I've never had a sugar free cookie- something to try. Have you gone low/ no sugar before?

Strong effort with the buttons, seething. Scones aren't actually as sugary as a lot of other delicious baked goods! I gave away all my Christmas chocolate supplies before starting but found a load of white chocolate buttons I'd missed today. Sneaky buttons. But not eaten any so far.
I hope the tetchiness is easing off. The emotional side seems to be getting easier for me (did a few weeks before Christmas too).

seething1234 · 08/01/2022 18:23

Someone recommended the Allan Carr book and I'm reading it, I don't know if it's working but I'm nicely coping with any urges. I'm on day 5 or 6 and haven't caved (yet!).

Ruralbliss · 09/01/2022 09:15

Ooooh @seething1234 I haven't heard of his sugar book or is it the cigarettes one. I know most of my mates used it to give up fags in the 1990s/early 2000s so must be pretty powerful

Doseydots · 10/01/2022 20:05

I have been lurking on this thread and started today to cut out refined sugar. I recently bought myself a blackout eyemask with Bluetooth headphones. I fall asleep listening to hypnosis tracks on YouTube or spotiy. I think it really helps and I sleep well too

MadameLeotta · 11/01/2022 22:05

Hi, for the pp asking about inspiring books to help with quitting or reducing sugar, I’ve previously read David Gillespie’s Sweet Poison book and found it really helpful (think I might re-read it actually!). From memory, he doesn’t suggest it’s necessary to reduce all carbs (which I could never do) but instead focuses just on refined sugar.

I’ve always had a very sweet tooth but from September I strictly calorie counted to lose a stone and whilst I didn’t ban any foods, I quickly learnt that sugary foods were high in calories whilst being very unsatisfying. As a result I naturally drastically reduced them and very quickly got out of the habit of eating them. Then I had my birthday, followed by Christmas and am back to eating sugary snacks morning, noon and night! I haven’t gained any weight back amazingly but I want to cut right back on sugar again as I definitely felt better without it. For me, I think I need to plan 3 enjoyable meals a day (rather than not eating for hours and then eating 6 custard creams!) and have some non-sugar snack options in case I get hungry. For this week I’m going to make an effort to reduce rather than completely banning refined sugar, but will see how that goes. I’ve got a shopping delivery tomorrow with lots of nice fruit coming and am going to plan some tasty meals.

MadameLeotta · 13/01/2022 21:57

Well I’ve been doing ok over the last couple of days - haven’t had any biscuits or sugary snacks at all, which is a major change to recent activity. I’ve still had 8g of sugar in my porridge each morning (as I’m out of bananas) but when I saw on the label that each chunk of Toblerone has 20g of sugar (and I’d often eat 2 at a time), 8g doesn’t seem too horrific and that’s the only added refined sugar I’ve been having. I’m going to cut it down by 1g each day too. I’ve been having 3 meals and no snacks, apart from a couple of crackers with cheese that I had this evening as I was genuinely hungry because I’d had tea quite early tonight. Plus if I’m actually hungry I’m going to have something to eat, but hopefully something non-sugary.

Hope everyone else is getting on ok too?

seething1234 · 14/01/2022 09:12

@MadameLeotta that's an eyeopener to see written down how many grams in a Toblerone piece, it would never actually register with me to check.

I still haven't had any bars or biscuits. My MIL dropped down fairy cakes topped with chocolate and I had 1 and it wasn't even that appealing. I'm still having things like sweet waffles from Aldi with a cuppa, so still need to take that.

On the upside although I'm not seeing a massive difference on the scales I'm noticing my tummy is not as flabby

MadameLeotta · 14/01/2022 22:50

@seething1234 I’m sure I’ve read somewhere that you’re quite likely to notice a change of shape (especially around your waistline) before the scales change. Sounds like you’re doing well.

I’m quite impressed that I’ve made it through Friday evening without feeling the need for chocolate! Although I did eat a lot of the stuff over Christmas so perhaps I’ve had enough of it for now. I’ve been feeling quite drained and slightly headachey the last couple of days which might be down to the drastic reduction in sugar, although I’ve had a really busy week at work too so it might be that.

I need to get more organised with meal planning for next week over the weekend - if I’m well fed I don’t get the sugar urges as badly.

Welcomebacksummer · 15/01/2022 13:55

Hi all, hope everyone is coping well. I am still going strong.. !
Sugar free jelly has been my sweet tooth saviour but I have ditched the cookies as the calories will start to add up eventually.
I no longer crave sugary treats constantly, the odd pang when the DC are eating something nice but otherwise I have realised I don't even want anything sweet after a meal and so forth.
My issue is, when does it end? Do I just never eat a bar of chocolate or dessert again? What if I do and can't stop?

MadameLeotta · 15/01/2022 22:44

@Welcomebacksummer I imagine you’ll perhaps just have the occasional sweet pudding etc as a treat but just not every day. I think you’d be fine stopping again after just one indulgence, it’s more if it creeps back up to being a multi-times-a-day habit that it gets trickier to stop.

So I’ve had a hot pudding and ice cream tonight BUT in my defence it was already bought earlier in the week specifically for us to all have this evening. So I had a portion, enjoyed it and will carry on with my low sugar efforts again tomorrow 😇

I am hoping that's where I can get eventually, like you have done- allow the treat and then move on.

It's a weird concept to me as sometimes sugar is all I would eat all day Blush so moving away and having it occasionally is a whole new world right now.

I am astounded by the sugar content in so many foods that I would eat with batting an eyelid.. I must have been eating 3 x the recommended daily allowance Confused

Keep up the good work!!

WiserMe · 15/01/2022 23:24

I'm joining too.

My clothes are tight and I am bigger than ever in my life. Feel miserable and want to hide.
Very difficult to get started when boyfriend buys sweet stuff, but I have asked him not to.
I have good willpower and have done this before.
I'm stopping sugary food from 15 minutes ago.

MadameLeotta · 15/01/2022 23:29

I’m exactly the same - prior to this week, I would usually be eating huge amounts of sugar all day every day. I’d regularly skip breakfast and then have a pile of biscuits mid-morning. Chocolate was always on the go, and I have eaten too many Quality Street over Christmas to even count 🙈 But I’m finding that if I make the effort to eat a proper meal when I’m hungry it’s then much easier to avoid the temptation of sugary snacks as I’m not remotely hungry. They’re of much less interest then - but if I go too long between meals they’re suddenly really tempting again!

Bringmeadog · 15/01/2022 23:36

I tend to go through waves of eating loads of shit (chocolate, cakes, sweets), then I cut it all out for months, then it creeps up again. Never by much more than 0.5 stone or so, but I’m pretty slim so it shows quickly.
I’m starting again tomorrow. Not a super low carb, but cutting out refined sugar, wheat, white rice etc.
I actually really enjoy eating fresh fruit, salad and veg and clean, non-messed about with protein. I got to a shape I was very happy with over the summer, then went on a couple of holidays and it’s slipped again…… starting tomorrow with a sense of purpose!

Doseydots · 16/01/2022 19:08

I am starting from tomorrow. I’ve been dreadful this weekend. I really need to sort myself out I feel dreadful

MadameLeotta · 16/01/2022 21:54

I’m re-reading Sweet Poison and am at the part where he talks about the health effects of too much fructose 😳 Definitely enough to put you off!

RoseGold24 · 17/01/2022 08:14

Hello, can I please join! It has finally dawned on me that I'm a MASSIVE sugar addict. This is gonna be hard...

peridito · 18/01/2022 10:35

You sound like a friendly bunch ,I'm going to make an effort .I realised that I'm always saying "oh ,I've got no will power " as a kind of excuse

.So now ,I try NOT to instantly give in ( even if it's just postponing ) and tell myself I do have will power.

Two things - I have found a magnesium supplement helpful in the past for curbing chocolate cravings .

what do people think about using artificial sweetners in hot drinks ?
2022weightlossusername · 18/01/2022 17:40

In two weeks the only added sugar type food I’ve had have been popcorn the weekend before last, a slice of apple tart the same weekend and ketchup on a few meals.

I’ve gone from gorging chocolate every single day to that and I’m so happy about it!

meliscanan88 · 18/01/2022 18:47

Can I join too!Sugar is essential for me.
